Estimation method of attentional object using spatial frequency selectivity in pupillary response.

This study investigates pupillary dynamics associated with object-based visual attention using two overlaid filtered icon images (hybrid stimulus). Subjects were presented with the hybrid stimulus and instructed to maintain their attention on one of the icon images while the spatial frequency (HSF: High spatial frequency or LSF: Low spatial frequency) components of the two images alternated periodically, where they had different components from each other. Pupil diameter was continuously recorded during the alternations. The combination of motion conditions (static or dynamic) of the icon imag

Photostimulation improves maturation of human photoreceptors.

The human retina contains photoreceptor cells that detect light and enable vision. The development of these cells involves a tightly regulated cascade of structural and molecular events, and their dysfunction leads to irreversible blindness in many retinal diseases. Human retinal organoids derived from stem cells have become powerful tools to model retinal development and disease, but they often remain immature and lack key features required for full function. Light is not only the sensory target of photoreceptors but also an important developmental signal in vivo. However, light has rarely be

Intrinsic timing, not temporal prediction, underlies ramping dynamics in visual and parietal cortex during passive behavior.

Ramping neural activity is widely interpreted as a signature of predictive processing, but whether these signals truly reflect predictions or instead emerge from sensory mechanisms remains unclear. To address this question, we used two-photon calcium imaging across multiple cell types in visual and parietal cortex, while awake mice passively received repeated audiovisual stimuli presented under distinct temporal structures. Neurons segregated into two broad response classes: stimulus-activated (ramp-down) and stimulus-inhibited (ramp-up) populations with diverse temporal kinetics. Multiple fin

Optogenetic stimulation of single ganglion cells in the living primate fovea.

Though the responses of the rich variety of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) reflect the totality of visual processing in the retina and provide the sole conduit for those processed responses to the brain, we have much to learn about how the brain uses these signals to guide behavior. An impediment to developing a comprehensive understanding of the role of retinal circuits in behavior is the paucity of causal studies in the intact primate visual system. Here, we demonstrate the ability to optogenetically activate individual RGCs with flashes of light focused on single RGC somas in vivo, with no e

Information content and temporal structure of face selective local field potentials frequency bands in IT cortex.

Sensory stimulation triggers synchronized bioelectrical activity in the brain across various frequencies. This study delves into network-level activities, specifically focusing on local field potentials as a neural signature of visual category representation. Specifically, we studied the role of different local field potential frequency oscillation bands in visual stimulus category representation by presenting images of faces and objects to three monkeys while recording local field potential from inferior temporal cortex. We found category selective local field potential responses mainly for a

Role of corpus callosum in unconscious vision.

The existence of unconscious visually triggered behavior in patients with cortical blindness (e.g., homonymous hemianopia) has been amply demonstrated and the neural bases of this phenomenon have been thoroughly studied. However, a crosstalk between the two hemispheres as a possible mechanism of unconscious or partially conscious vision has not been so far considered. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the relationship between structural and functional properties of the corpus callosum (CC), as shown by probabilistic tractography (PT), behavioral detection/discrimination performance and

The Parameters Governing the Anti-Myopia Efficacy of Chromatically Simulated Myopic Defocus in Tree Shrews.

PURPOSE: We previously showed that exposing tree shrews (Tupaia belangeri, small diurnal mammals closely related to primates) to chromatically simulated myopic defocus (CSMD) counteracted small-cage myopia and instead induced hyperopia (approximately +4 diopters [D]). Here, we explored the parameters of this effect. METHODS: Tree shrews were exposed to the following interventions for 11 days: (1) rearing in closed (n = 7) or open (n = 6) small cages; (2) exposed to a video display of Maltese cross images with CSMD combined with overhead lighting (n = 4); (3) exposed to a video display of Malt

Dynamic predictive templates in perception.

Hallucinations are vivid and transient experiences of objects, such as images or sounds, that occur in the absence of a corresponding stimulus.1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 To understand the neurocomputational mechanisms of hallucinations, cognitive neuroscience has focused on experiments that induce false alarms (FAs) in healthy participants,1,2,3,4,5,9 psychosis-prone individuals,1,3,4 and patients diagnosed with schizophrenia.5 FAs occur when participants make decisions about difficult-to-detect stimuli and indicate the presence of a signal that was, in fact, not presented. Since FAs are, at heart, rep

Interacting rhythms enhance sensitivity of target detection in a fronto-parietal computational model of visual attention.

Even during sustained attention, enhanced processing of attended stimuli waxes and wanes rhythmically, with periods of enhanced and relatively diminished visual processing (and subsequent target detection) alternating at 4 or 8 Hz in a sustained visual attention task. These alternating attentional states occur alongside alternating dynamical states, in which lateral intraparietal cortex (LIP), the frontal eye field (FEF), and the mediodorsal pulvinar (mdPul) exhibit different activity and functional connectivity at α, β, and γ frequencies-rhythms associated with visual processing, working memo

Prior expectation enhances sensorimotor behavior by modulating population tuning and subspace activity in sensory cortex.

Prior knowledge facilitates our perception and goal-directed behaviors, particularly when sensory input is lacking or noisy. However, the neural mechanisms underlying the improvement in sensorimotor behavior by prior expectations remain unknown. In this study, we examine the neural activity in the middle temporal (MT) area of visual cortex while monkeys perform a smooth pursuit eye movement task with prior expectation of the visual target's motion direction. Prior expectations discriminately reduce the MT neural responses depending on their preferred directions, when the sensory evidence is we

Non-invasive auditory and visual stimulation attenuates α-Synuclein deposition and improves motor and non-motor symptoms in PD mice.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by dopaminergic neuron loss and α-synuclein (α-Syn) aggregates, but lacks effective treatments for the disease progression and non-motor symptoms. Recently, combined 40 Hz auditory and visual stimulation is emerging as a promising non-invasive method to decrease amyloid and improve cognition in Alzheimer's disease (AD), but whether this treatment can modify α-Syn-induced PD pathology remains unclear. Here we evaluated the effects of chronic exposure to 40 Hz and 80 Hz auditory and visual stimulation on α-Syn accumulation and the functional effects of 4

Diversity of Ganglion Cell Responses to Saccade-Like Image Shifts in the Primate Retina.

Saccades are a fundamental part of natural vision. They interrupt fixations of the visual gaze and rapidly shift the image that falls onto the retina. These stimulus dynamics can cause activation or suppression of different retinal ganglion cells, but how they affect the encoding of visual information in different types of ganglion cells is largely unknown. Here, we recorded spiking responses to saccade-like shifts of luminance gratings from ganglion cells in isolated marmoset retinas and investigated how the activity depended on the combination of presaccadic and postsaccadic images. All iden

Timing is Everything: Stochastic Optogenetic Stimulation Reduces Adaptation in Retinal Ganglion Cells.

Optogenetics gives us unprecedented power to investigate brain connectivity. The ability to activate neural circuits with single cell resolution and its ease of application has provided a wealth of knowledge in brain function. More recently, optogenetics has shown tremendous utility in prosthetics applications, including vision restoration for patients with retinitis pigmentosa. One of the disadvantages of optogenetics, however, is its poor temporal bandwidth, i.e. the cell's inability to fire at a rate that matches the optical stimulation rate at high frequencies (>30 Hz). This research propo

Electrophysiological evidence of global structure-from-motion processing of biological motion in 6-month-old infants.

Understanding the actions of others is a fundamental and important skill for navigating our social world. A striking example of how our visual system is sensitive to others' actions is the phenomenon of biological motion (BM), in which the visual system encodes socially relevant information regarding action from as few as a dozen point-lights of motion. Previous studies have demonstrated that infants can discriminate between BM and other types of actions. However, there is a lack of electrophysiological evidence outlining the exact point of time within the first year of life when global struct

ERG and Behavioral CFF in Light-Damaged Albino Rats.

The full-field ERG is useful for index rod- or cone-mediated retinal function in rodent models of retinal degeneration. However, the relationship between the ERG response amplitudes and visually guided behavior, such as flicker detection, is not well understood. A comparison of ERG to behavioral responses in a light-damage model of retinal degeneration allows us to better understand the functional implications of electrophysiological changes. Flicker-ERG and behavioral responses to flicker were used to determine critical flicker frequency (CFF) under scotopic and photopic conditions before and

Superior neural individuation of mother's than stranger's faces by five months of age.

Human adults are better at recognizing different views of a given face as belonging to the same person when that person is familiar rather than unfamiliar. To clarify the developmental origin of this well-established phenomenon, one group of five-month-olds (N = 22) was presented with pictures of four different unfamiliar female faces at a fixed rate (6 Hz, 166 msec stimulus onset asynchrony), interrupted every 5th stimulus (1.2 Hz) by either their mother's face (mother oddball condition) or, in different stimulation sequences, a stranger's face (stranger oddball condition). In another group o

The human egomotion network.

All volitional movement in a three-dimensional space requires multisensory integration, in particular of visual and vestibular signals. Where and how the human brain processes and integrates self-motion signals remains enigmatic. Here, we applied visual and vestibular self-motion stimulation using fast and precise whole-brain neuroimaging to delineate and characterize the entire cortical and subcortical egomotion network in a substantial cohort (n=131). Our results identify a core egomotion network consisting of areas in the cingulate sulcus (CSv, PcM/pCi), the cerebellum (uvula), and the temp

Emotional induced attentional blink in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Although an attentional bias for threat is implicated in anxiety disorders, such a bias has not been consistently observed in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This inconsistency is partially due to a paucity of studies employing robust attentional tasks. The emotional attentional blink (EAB), a phenomenon in which the brief appearance of a task-irrelevant, emotionally arousing image captures attention to such an extent that target stimuli cannot be detected, have increasing been employed as more robust tasks of attentional biases. METHODS: In the present study, patients with O

Negative electroretinograms: genetic and acquired causes, diagnostic approaches and physiological insights.

The dark-adapted human electroretinogram (ERG) response to a standard bright flash includes a negative-going a-wave followed by a positive-going b-wave that crosses the baseline. An electronegative waveform (or negative ERG) results when the b-wave is selectively reduced such that the ERG fails to cross the baseline following the a-wave. In the context of a normally sized a-wave, it indicates a site of retinal dysfunction occurring after phototransduction (commonly at the photoreceptor to bipolar cell synapse). This is an important finding. In genetic disease, the pattern of ERG abnormality ca
