On the intrinsic stability of curcumin.

Curcumin is the primary polyphenol and active ingredient in turmeric, which has demonstrated anti-cancer, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties, leading to a significant effort to produce therapeutic variants, with, for example, improved solubility. However, numerous questions remain about the biological activity of curcumin, including whether curcumin, or a metabolite, is responsible for these therapeutic properties, the nature of the mechanism(s) of biological activity for the active species and the potential role of photochemistry. Underpinning these questions is a l…

Simulating nonadiabatic dynamics in benzophenone: Tracing internal conversion through photoelectron spectra.

Benzophenone serves as a prototype chromophore for studying the photochemistry of aromatic ketones, with applications ranging from biochemistry to organic light-emitting diodes. In particular, its intersystem crossing from the first singlet excited state to triplet states has been extensively studied, but experimental or theoretical studies on the preceding internal conversion within the singlet manifold are very rare. This relaxation mechanism is particularly important because direct population transfer of the first singlet excited state from the ground state is inefficient due to its low osc…

Effect of electron-donating substitution on the triplet state reactivities of 1-nitronaphthalene.

Nitro-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (nitro-PAHs), often found in polluted air, are carcinogenic and mutagenic. The nitro group increases the spin-orbit coupling and results in the lowest excited triplet (T1) on the picosecond time scale with a high yield. The electron-donating substituents have a significant influence on the photophysics and photochemistry of nitro-PAHs. We used transient absorption spectroscopy and kinetic analysis to investigate the reactivities of the T1 state 1-methoxy-4-nitronaphthalene (3MeO-NN) and 1-methyl-4-nitronaphthalene (3Me-NN). The results show that the metho…

Antiproliferative and Cytotoxic Activities of Fluorescein-A Diagnostic Angiography Dye.

Fluorescein is a fluorescent dye used as a diagnostic tool in various fields of medicine. Although fluorescein itself possesses low toxicity, after photoactivation, it releases potentially toxic molecules, such as singlet oxygen (1O2) and, as we demonstrate in this work, also carbon monoxide (CO). As both of these molecules can affect physiological processes, the main aim of this study was to explore the potential biological impacts of fluorescein photochemistry. In our in vitro study in a human hepatoblastoma HepG2 cell line, we explored the possible effects on cell viability, cellular energy…

Genetically Encoded Photosensitizers as Light-Triggered Antimicrobial Agents.

Diseases caused by multi-drug resistant pathogens have become a global concern. Therefore, new approaches suitable for treating these bacteria are urgently needed. In this study, we analyzed genetically encoded photosensitizers (PS) related to the green fluorescent protein (GFP) or light-oxygen-voltage (LOV) photoreceptors for their exogenous applicability as light-triggered antimicrobial agents. Depending on their specific photophysical properties and photochemistry, these PSs can produce different toxic ROS (reactive oxygen species) such as O2•- and H2O2 via type-I, as well as 1O2 via type-I…

Photoreduction of p-benzoquinones: effects of alcohols and amines on the intermediates and reactivities in solutions.

The photochemistry of 1,4-benzoquinone (BQ) and alkyl-, Cl- and related derivatives, e.g. methyl-, 2,6-dimethyl-, chloro-, 2,5-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinone, duroquinone and chloranil, was studied in nonaqueous solvents by UV-vis spectroscopy using nanosecond laser pulses at 308 nm. The reactivity of the triplet state (3Q*) of the quinones with 2-propanol in the absence of water is largest for BQ and depends mainly on the quinone structure, whereas the rate constant of electron transfer from amines, such as triethylamine (TEA) or 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane, is close to the diffusion-controlled …

Arene Activation through Iminium Ions: Product Diversity from Intramolecular Photocycloaddition Reactions.

While 2-alk-ω-enyloxy-sustituted benzaldehydes do not display any photochemical reactivity at the arene core, the respective iminium perchlorates were found to undergo efficient reactions either upon direct irradiation (λ=366 nm) or under sensitizing conditions (λ=420 nm, 2.5 mol% thioxanthen-9-one). Three pathways were found: (a) Most commonly, the reaction led to benzoxacyclic products in which the olefin in the tether underwent a formal, yet unprecedented carboformylation (13 examples, 44-99 % yield). The cascade process occurred with high diastereoselectivity and was found to be stereoconv

L2,3-edge x-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy analysis of photoisomerism in solid ruthenium-sulfur dioxide complexes.

Ru L(2,3) edge x-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy spectra of four compounds [Ru(SO(2))(NH(3))(4)X]Y (X =  water, Y = (±)-camphorsulfonate(2); X =water, Y = tosylate(2); X =isonicotinamide, Y = tosylate(2); X =pyridine, Y = triflate(2)) are reported before and after optical excitation, which causes photoinduced linkage isomerism of the SO(2) ligand. Principal component analysis reveals consistent changes in the spectra upon photoisomerization, suggesting a partial oxidation of the Ru ion. These results demonstrate that x-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy is an effective means of probin

Profiling of residue-level photo-oxidative damage in peptides.

Protein and peptide oxidation is a key feature in the progression of a variety of disease states and in the poor performance of protein-based products. The present work demonstrates a mass spectrometry-based approach to profiling degradation at the amino acid residue level. Synthetic peptides containing the photosensitive residues, tryptophan and tyrosine, were used as models for protein-bound residue photodegradation. Electrospray ionisation tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS) was utilised to characterise and provide relative quantitative information on the formation of photoproducts localis

A large enhancement of photoinduced second harmonic generation in CdI2--Cu layered nanocrystals.

Photoinduced second harmonic generation (PISHG) in undoped as well as in various Cu-doped (0.05-1.2% Cu) CdI2 nanocrystals was measured at liquid nitrogen temperature (LNT). It was found that the PISHG increases with increasing Cu doping up to approximately 0.6% and then decreases almost to that for the undoped CdI2 for doping higher than approximately 1%. The values of the second-order susceptibility ranged from 0.50 to 0.67 pm V(-1) for the Cu-doped nanocrystals with a thickness of 0.5 nm. The Cu-doping dependence shown in a parabolic fashion suggests a crucial role of the Cu agglomerates in

Stacked-structure-dependent photoelectrochemical properties of CdS nanoparticle/layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheet multilayer films prepared by layer-by-layer accumulation.

Inorganic multilayer films were prepared by layer-by-layer accumulation of positively charged layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets and negatively charged CdS nanoparticles of different sizes. Nanoparticles were densely immobilized on LDH sheets to form a monolayer without coalescence into larger particles. The absorbance and photoluminescence intensity of immobilized CdS particles were enlarged with an increase in the accumulation number of the film. Hybrid films produced by accumulation of both monolayers of CdS particles (diameter: 5 nm) and those of smaller CdS particles (2.1 nm) exhib

Spatially selective optical tuning of quantum dot thin film luminescence.

Photolithographically generated patterns have been created on immobilized CdSe QD thin films by fine-tuning their optical properties (intensity and emission wavelength) postsynthetically. These optically modified QDs show enhanced selectivity for binding of different ligands, affording the ability to fabricate optically reconfigurable surfaces for display or sensing applications. The patterns may be readily generated with any typical optical lithographic approach.

Retinal phototoxicity induced by hydrochlorothiazide after exposure to a UV tanning device.

UV radiation is known to cause acute and chronic eye and skin damage. The present case report describes the occurrence of hydrochlorothiazide-induced retinal phototoxicity immediately after exposure to UV light emanated from a sunbed in a 40-year-old myopic woman. During the tanning session she had always worn UV protective eyewear, except for a few minutes when she took the protective goggles off to put her spectacles on to locate and turn the timer switch off. At baseline her visual acuity was 10/25 in OD and 10/80 in OS. Fundus examination revealed the presence of retinal lesions in both ey
