The existence of the major urinary metabolite of melatonin, 6-sulphatoxymelatonin (aMT6s), was validated for mink and the 24 hr urinary excretion pattern was determined in intact and superior cervical ganglionectomized animals under different photoperiodic conditions. Within- and between-assay variations, parallelism between serially mid-night pooled urine dilutions and standard curves in aMT6s free urine of mink at 1:125 dilution and recovery of aMT6s in mid-day pooled urine at 1:125 dilution provided a good validation for the mink urinary a MT6s assay. In natural photoperiods (January, LD 9:…

Carbon monoxide promotes flowering in Lemna gibba via a nitric oxide-dependent oxidative stress pathway involving a CO → NO → ROS signaling cascade. This novel redox-regulated mechanism offers new insights into floral transition, which is distinct from conventional photoperiod-dependent pathways. Carbon monoxide is increasingly recognized as a signaling molecule in plant systems; however, its role in reproductive development remains poorly understood. This study showed that carbon monoxide promotes flowering in Lemna gibba through a novel pathway involving nitric oxide and reactive oxygen spec…

We hypothesized that resistin is engaged in the development of leptin central insensitivity/resistance in sheep, which is a unique animal mo … tin (R2; 10.0 μg/kg BW; n = 10). The studies were performed during short-day (SD) and long-day (LD) photoperiods. Leptin and resistin concentrations were determined. Expression levels of a suppressor of cytokine signaling (SOCS)-3 and the long form of the leptin receptor (LeptRb) were determined in selected brain regions, including in the anterior pituitary ( …

In most species daily rhythms are synchronized by the photoperiodic cycle. They are generated by the circadian system, which is made of a pacemaker, an entrainment pathway to this clock, and one or more output signals. In vertebrates, melatonin produced by the pineal organ is one of these outputs. The production of this time-keeping hormone is high at night and low during the day. Despite the fact that this is a well-preserved pattern, the pathways through which the photoperiodic information controls the rhythm have been profoundly modified from early vertebrates to mammals. The photoperiodic …

The Djungarian hamster is a highly seasonal small mammal. The rhythmic secretion of melatonin by the pineal gland is under control of the circadian clock, conveying the photoperiodic message to the organism. Trans-pineal microdialysis permits the in vivo study of this well-defined and precise clock output by measuring melatonin release directly in the pineal gland. The aim of this study was to adapt this method to the Djungarian hamster in order to monitor clock properties during photoperiodic changes. Male adult Djungarian hamsters were kept in a long photoperiod (LD 16:8) and melatonin relea…

The hormone melatonin is synthesised and secreted from the pineal gland in darkness and triggers the daily and seasonal timing of various physiological and behavioural processes. The Mashona mole-rat, Cryptomys darlingi, lives in subterranean burrows that are completely sealed and is therefore rarely, if ever, exposed to light under natural conditions. Hence, this species is of particular interest for studies on rhythms of melatonin secretion. We investigated how plasma melatonin concentrations of the Mashona mole-rat responded to exposure to a long-term standard photoperiod of 12 h light, 12 …

The ability of FSH to stimulate cAMP accumulation in Sertoli cells cultured from either hamsters or rats declines with the age of the animal. Hypophysectomy or bilateral cryptorchidism of immature rats prevents this normal age-related decline in Sertoli cell response to FSH. However, neither hypophysectomy nor cryptorchidism of adult rats can restore the Sertoli cell response to that of the immature animal. In contrast, the Sertoli cell response to FSH in the adult golden hamster, a photoperiodic animal, can be restored to that of an immature animal during short photoperiod-induced testicular …

INTRODUCTION: Gestational chronodisruption impact maternal circadian rhythms, inhibiting the nocturnal increase of melatonin, a critical hormone that contributes to maternal changes adaptation, entrains circadian rhythms, and prepares the fetus for birth and successful health in adulthood. In rats, we know that gestational chronodisruption by maternal chronic photoperiod shifting (CPS) impaired maternal melatonin levels and resulted in long-term metabolic and cardiovascular effects in adult male offspring. Here, we investigated the consequences of CPS on mother and adult female offspring and e…

Blue light therapy can be used in horses to alter the natural photoperiod and inhibit winter hair coat growth. Seasonal increases in ACTH occur in the fall season but are exaggerated in horses with pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID). Additionally, PPID horses frequently present with hypertrichosis. Thus, blue light therapy was proposed as a potential management tool for hypertrichosis and for investigating the impact of photoperiod manipulation on ACTH. Eighteen PPID horses, aged 18 to 31 yr, from a university-owned research herd were selected and assigned to either the control group…

The thymus in vertebrates plays a critical role in producing functionally competent T-lymphocytes. Phylogenetically, the thymus emerges early during evolution in jawed cartilaginous fish, and it is usually a bilateral organ placed subcutaneously at the dorsal commissure of the operculum. In this review, we summarize the current understanding of the thymus localization, histology studies, cell composition, and function in teleost fishes. Furthermore, we consider environmental factors that affect thymus development, such as seasonal changes, photoperiod, water temperature fluctuations and hormon…

The development of the pineal and retinal photoreceptors in the embryonic rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss was investigated by means of light and electron microscopy. The pineal photoreceptors endowed with photoreceptive outer segments and signal-transmitting synapses appeared first 15 days after fertilization, and well developed by 21 days. In contrast, the retinal photoreceptors appeared as late as 27 days after fertilization (1 day before hatching). This temporal disparity in photoreceptor development has been compared with the photoperiodic formation of otolith increments, which is initi…

Young chicks were raised under a standard cycle of illumination and their pineal glands were cultured in organ culture. We have already reported a rhythmic daily cycle in the cumulative incorporation of thymidine into DNA when the glands were incubated under the cycle of illumination to which they were entrained in vivo. Incorporation ceased shortly after the end of the photoperiod and resumed again at, or shortly after, start of the following photoperiod. We have now shown that this cycle was entrained to other lighting schedules and largely unaffected by the time of explanting into culture. …

Hormonal and neural signals transmitted from the pineal organ to the brain in cold-blooded vertebrates presumably convert information about the ambient illumination into signals which may be used to mediate photoperiodic and circadian responses. The possible intrapineal function of melatonin was investigated by recording intra- and extracellularly from photoreceptors and second-order neurons in the isolated superfused pineal organ of the trout (Salmo gairdneri). Melatonin added through the perfusion bath to the explanted pineal organ caused a dose-related and reversible inhibition of ganglion …

We investigated the transcriptional effects of temperature on metabolism in the liver and flight muscle prior to the onset of spring migration in redheaded buntings. We measured changes in body mass, cellular lipid accumulation, and transcription of metabolic genes in the liver and flight muscle, during a week of exposure to 8-h short photoperiod (SP; 8L: 16D) and 13-h-long photoperiod (LP; 13L: 11D) at 22 °C to ascertain the responsiveness to LP, and during 2.5 weeks of LP at 22 and 38 °C to examine the effect of temperature on LP-induced metabolic response. Particularly, we measured mRNA exp…

The transition to flowering is an important event in the plant life cycle and is modulated by several environmental factors including photoperiod, light quality, vernalization, and growth temperature, as well as biotic and abiotic stresses. In contrast to light and vernalization, little is known about the pathways that mediate the responses to other environmental variables. A mild increase in growth temperature, from 23 degrees C to 27 degrees C, is equally efficient in inducing flowering of Arabidopsis plants grown in 8-h short days as is transfer to 16-h long days. There is extensive natural…

The oscillatory expression of CSA in rice leaves is regulated by the circadian clock and red/far-red light signals, mediated through DOF5 and PIL11, and is required for normal pollen fertility. Photoperiod-sensitive male-sterile lines represent a pivotal innovation in the development of hybrid rice. However, the underlying mechanisms governing photoperiod-sensitive male reproductive development remain poorly understood. Our previous studies demonstrated that the carbon starved anther (csa) mutant exhibits male sterility under short-day (SD) conditions but partial fertility under long-day (LD) …

Mosquitoes are important vectors of infectious diseases affecting humans and animals. In North America, Culex mosquitoes transmit West Nile virus and other arboviruses, while their persistence in temperate regions depends strongly on seasonal processes such as diapause. Temperature, rainfall, and photoperiod jointly regulate mosquito development, survival, reproduction, and seasonal activity, yet many climate-driven models do not explicitly represent diapause or interacting environmental drivers. We develop a mechanistic, stage-structured model for temperate Culex populations that includes egg…

The gonadotropic system and ovarian growth and development were studied during vitellogenesis in female Atlantic salmon subjected to either simulated natural photoperiod and ambient water temperature (NL-amb), or an accelerating photoperiod (short day of LD8:16 from May 10) combined with either warmed (ca 2°C above ambient; 8L-warm) or cooled water (ca 2°C below ambient; 8L-cold) from May to September. Monthly samples were collected from 10 females/group for determination of transcript levels of pituitary gonadotropin subunits (fshb and lhb) and ovarian gonadotropin receptors (fshr and lhr), p…
