Perceptions of Physical Activity and Kin-Ball in Low-Active Adolescent Girls From Areas of Socioeconomic Disadvantage: A Mixed Methods Study.

Adolescent girls from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds exhibit low levels of physical activity. Alternative activities such as kin-ball may address barriers within this population. However, little is known about adolescent girls' perceptions of kin-ball. This study examined the physiological and perceptual responses to a kin-ball taster in comparison to more traditional modalities. Forty-two low-active adolescent girls (14.0 ± 0.5 years) from secondary schools in areas of socioeconomic disadvantage completed three 15-minute physical activity taster sessions (sprinting, dance, and ki

Transient hypoalgesia under physical exercise--relation to silent ischaemia and implications for cardiac rehabilitation.

A series of studies with humans as well as experiments carried out on animals could show that physical exercise leads to temporary hypoalgesia. Reduced sensitivity to pain is not only demonstrable after long-distance exercise (such as marathon run) but also after intensive physical exercise on a laboratory ergometer. Pain threshold elevation is most pronounced during maximal exertion, but hypoalgesia remains present also after exercise is stopped demonstrating that a systemic analgetic effect is induced by the exercise process. Pre-exercise pain threshold level is returned to approximately 60

Differences in prolonged walking intensity and duration between older people reporting difficulty, modifications or no difficulty in walking.

Older people report modifying their walking by slowing down speed or using walking aids to accommodate increased exertion and the decline in physical capacity. Self-reported walking modifications and difficulties are associated with daily walking accumulation; however, the relationship between self-reported walking ability and prolonged walking intensity and duration is not well understood. This cross-sectional study compared walking speed, duration, and changes in intensity during prolonged walking bout between older people self-reporting walking difficulty, modifications, or no difficulty in

[Effect of physical activity on blood lipids and adrenal function during emotional stress].

The experiments on physically trained and untrained dogs have shown that violent physical exertion (racing up to complete exhaustion) in the presence of emotional stress enhances stress-induced hyperlipemia. The untrained animals developed especially abrupt changes in lipid metabolism. In the trained animals the repeated cycles (stress without complete exhaustion) made the adrenal function and lipid metabolism return to normal and stabilize irrespective of exposures. A decrease in the adrenal function in the untrained animals with hyperlipemia is considered to be the atherogenic factor. The ro…

Thoroughbred horses susceptible to recurrent exertional rhabdomyolysis have elevated skeletal muscle mitochondrial capacities.

Recurrent exertional rhabdomyolysis (RER) is a skeletal muscle disease that can intermittently impede careers of equine athletes. Manifesting as episodes of muscular stiffness and degeneration, RER causes lost training and competition days. RER is associated with abnormal intracellular calcium (Ca2+) regulation. Calcium released from the sarcoplasmic reticulum to initiate contraction may also be transported into mitochondria, which impacts energy production. RER-susceptible horses exhibit downregulated mitochondrial proteins but upregulated mitochondrial genes. Thus, mitochondrial function may

Correlation properties and respiratory frequency of ECG-derived heart rate variability during multiple race-pace running intervals in female and male long-distance runners.

Aim was to evaluate alterations of the non-linear short-term scaling exponent alpha1 of detrended fluctuation analysis (DFAa1) of heart rate (HR) variability (HRV) as a sensitive marker for assessing global physiological demands during multiple running intervals. As a secondary analysis, agreement of ECG-derived respiratory frequency (EDR) compared to respiratory frequency (RF) derived from the metabolic cart was evaluated with the same chest belt device. Fifteen trained female and male long-distance runners completed four running bouts over 5 min on a treadmill at marathon pace. During the la

Relationship Between External Training Load and Session Rating of Perceived Exertion Training Impulse in Elite Sprinters.

PURPOSE: To quantify the change in session rating of perceived exertion training impulse (RPE-TRIMP) that may occur in response to increased running distance at 3 running velocity ranges in elite sprinters. METHODS: We monitored training load in elite sprinters (women: n = 7; men: n = 11) using wearable Global Positioning System technology and RPE-TRIMP for a total of 681 individual training sessions during a 22-week competition-preparation period. Internal training load was operationalized by RPE-TRIMP, and external training load was operationalized by distance covered in 3 velocity ranges.

Locomotor and Physiological Demands of Small-Sided Soccer Games in Wildcard and Regular Players: Effects of Goalkeepers and Type of Wildcard.

BACKGROUND: Small-sided games (SSGs) are frequent training drills in soccer. This study investigated whether type of game (ie, with/without goalkeepers) and wildcard ( without vs internal vs external wildcard) impact the physiological (heartrate [HR]) and locomotor (total distance [TD] covered) demands in regular and wildcard players and to evaluate between-player and within-player variability. HYPOTHESIS: Demands are influenced by wildcard and game type, with higher demand (distance covered at high intensities and sprint speed) in regular players and with higher variability in SSG with wildc

Evaluation of the ventilatory effects on human subjects in prolonged hip-flexed/head-down restraint position.

BACKGROUND: The restraint chair is a tool used by law enforcement and correction personnel to control aggressive, agitated individuals. When initiating its use, subjects are often placed in a hip-flexed/head-down (HFHD) position to remove handcuffs. Usually, this period of time is less than two minutes but can become more prolonged in particularly agitated patients. Some have proposed this positioning limits ventilation and can result in asphyxia. The aim of this study is to evaluate if a prolonged HFHD restraint position causes significant ventilatory compromise. METHODS: Subjects exercised
