Response properties of the human frequency-following response (FFR) to speech and non-speech sounds: level dependence, adaptation and phase-locking limits.

OBJECTIVE: The frequency-following response (FFR) is a neurophonic potential used to assess auditory neural encoding at subcortical stages. Despite the FFR's empirical and clinical utility, basic response properties of this evoked potential remain undefined. DESIGN: We measured FFRs to speech and nonspeech (pure tone, chirp sweeps) stimuli to quantify three key properties of this potential: level-dependence (I/O functions), adaptation and the upper limit of neural phase-locking. STUDY SAMPLE: n = 13 normal-hearing listeners. RESULTS: I/O functions showed FFR amplitude increased with increas

The relation between flocculus volume and tinnitus after cerebellopontine angle tumor surgery.

PURPOSE: Chronic tinnitus is a common symptom after cerebellopontine angle (CPA) tumor removal. Sometimes, the tinnitus is gaze-modulated. In that case, patients can change the loudness or pitch of their tinnitus by ocular movements. During tumor removal by a retrosigmoid craniotomy, the cerebellar flocculus is manipulated by the surgical approach to access the tumor. The flocculus has been associated with tinnitus in rats, and is involved in eye-gaze control. This suggests that the flocculus may have a role in gaze-modulated tinnitus after CPA tumor removal. In order to investigate this hypot

Perceptual evaluation of severe pediatric voice disorders: rater reliability using the consensus auditory perceptual evaluation of voice.

The purpose of this nonrandomized prospective study was to quantify the inter- and intrarater reliability of experienced speech-language pathologist's perceptual ratings of voice in pediatric patients post-laryngotracheal reconstruction (LTR). Moderate to severe dysphonia is common in this population. Using the sentence portion of the Consensus Auditory Perceptual Evaluation-Voice (CAPE-V) rating scale, three experienced speech-language pathologists independently rated randomized voice samples of 50 participants ages 4-20 years, who had acquired or congenital airway conditions requiring at lea

A comparison of visual and auditory motion processing in human cerebral cortex.

Visual and auditory motion information can be used together to provide complementary information about the movement of objects. To investigate the neural substrates of such cross-modal integration, functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to assess brain activation while subjects performed separate visual and auditory motion discrimination tasks. Areas of unimodal activation included the primary and/or early sensory cortex for each modality plus additional sites extending toward parietal cortex. Areas conjointly activated by both tasks included lateral parietal cortex, lateral frontal co

Neural characteristics of successful and less successful speech and word learning in adults.

A remarkable characteristic of the human nervous system is its ability to learn to integrate novel (foreign) complex sounds into words. However, the neural changes involved in how adults learn to integrate novel sounds into words and the associated individual differences are largely unknown. Unlike English, most languages of the world use pitch patterns to mark individual word meaning. We report a study assessing the neural correlates of learning to use these pitch patterns in words by English-speaking adults who had no previous exposure to such usage. Before and after training, subjects discr

[Time processing in the velo-cardio-facial syndrome (22q11) and its link with the caudate nucleus].

INTRODUCTION: Velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS) is a neurogenetic disorder caused by a microdeletion on chromosome 22q11. Among other cognitive impairments and learning difficulties, affected individuals show difficulties in estimating time intervals (Debbané et al., 2005). Interestingly, neuroimaging studies have found an increased volume of the basal ganglia of people with VCFS (Eliez et al., 2002; Kates et al., 2004; Campbell et al., 2006). Given that the caudate nucleus represents a central component of the cerebral network underlying temporal perception skills, the present report proposes

Landing mosquitoes bounce when engaging a substrate.

In this experimental study we film the landings of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes to characterize landing behaviors and kinetics, limitations, and the passive physiological mechanics they employ to land on a vertical surface. A typical landing involves 1-2 bounces, reducing inbound momentum by more than half before the mosquito firmly attaches to a surface. Mosquitoes initially approach landing surfaces at 0.1-0.6 m/s, decelerating to zero velocity in approximately 5 ms at accelerations as high as 5.5 gravities. Unlike Dipteran relatives, mosquitoes do not visibly prepare for landing with leg adjust

Alterations in Regional Homogeneity in Patients With Unilateral Chronic Tinnitus.

Chronic subjective tinnitus is a widespread disorder. This perceptual anomaly is assumed to result from a dysbalance of excitatory and inhibitory mechanisms on different levels of the auditory pathways. However, the brain areas involved are still under discussion. Using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging, we investigate differences in cerebral regional homogeneity (ReHo) between patients with unilateral chronic tinnitus and nontinnitus control subjects. To our knowledge, our study is the first to investigate the intraregional connectivity of patients with unilateral tinnitus i

Evaluation of Differential Sensitivity for Frequency, Intensity, and Duration around the Tinnitus Frequency in Adults with Tonal Tinnitus.

OBJECTIVES: The perceptual characteristics of tinnitus are usually assessed by a matching procedure, where loudness and pitch of an external sound are matched to those of the tinnitus percept. The duration discrimination test (DDT), differential limen for intensity (DLI) and differential limen for frequency (DLF) are relatively simple psychoacoustic methods of measuring differential sensitivity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 15 participants with normal or minimal hearing loss with tinnitus in the age range of 18 to 40 years were enrolled in the present study. Pure tone audiometry (PTA), immittance a

Review of the roles of temporal and place coding of frequency in speech discrimination.

Numerous studies have demonstrated that the frequency spectrum of sounds is represented in the neural code of single auditory nerve fibres b … tematically as a function of sound intensity and therefore lacks the robustness required to explain pitch perception (in humans), which is nearly independent of sound intensity. Further indication that the place principle plays a minor role in discrimination of speech comes from observations that signs of impairment of the spectral analysis in the cochlea in some …

Adversarial relationship between combined medial olivocochlear (MOC) and middle-ear-muscle (MEM) reflexes and alarm-in-noise detection thresholds under negative signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs).

The role of auditory efferent feedback from the medial olivocochlear system (MOCS) and the middle-ear-muscle (MEM) reflex in tonal detection tasks for humans in the presence of noise is not clearly understood. Past studies have yielded inconsistent results on the relationship between efferent feedback and tonal detection thresholds. This study attempts to address this inconsistency. Fifteen human subjects with normal hearing participated in an experiment where they were asked to identify an alarm signal in the presence of 80 dBA background (pink) noise. Masked detection thresholds were estimat

Binaural sensitivity as a function of interaural electrode position with a bilateral cochlear implant user.

Experiments were conducted with a single, bilateral cochlear implant user to examine interaural level and time-delay cues that putatively underlie the design and efficacy of bilateral implant systems. The subject's two implants were of different types but custom equipment allowed presentation of controlled bilateral stimuli, particularly those with specified interaural time difference (ITD) and interaural level difference (ILD) cues. A lateralization task was used to measure the effect of these cues on the perceived location of the sensations elicited. For trains of fixed-amplitude, biphasic c

Effect of intratympanically administered gentamicin on hearing and tinnitus in Menière's disease.

We have examined the effect of intratympanic gentamicin on hearing and tinnitus in 69 patients with intractable Menière's disease. Tinnitus was scored from 1 to 4 depending on its severity. The mean pure tone audiometry level before treatment was 57.5 dB and 1 year after treatment 63.5 dB Five subjects became deaf in the treated ear, and in 13 subjects hearing loss was > 10 dB and in 21 subjects 0 10 dB. In 25 subjects significant improvement (> 10 dB) was gained, and in 5 patients. Tinnitus was significantly reduced after treatment with gentamicin. A total of 66 patients had tinnitus before t

Effects on guinea pig cochlea from exposure to moderately intense broad-band noise.

Guinea pigs, which were either anesthetized (A) or conscious (U), were exposed to four 2 h sessions of broad-band noise of 96 dB SPL. Cochlear microphonics and N1 thresholds were measured prior to killing from 1 to 13 days later. The cochleas were examined by SEM and by section. The U series suffered less N1 threshold loss and recovered within 10-13 days, while the large initial loss in the A series did not completely reverse within the period of study. Initially, the IHC stereocilia in the basal half of the cochlea showed marked bending, the affected area being somewhat more extensive in the

Acoustically Enriched Environment during the Critical Period of Postnatal Development Positively Modulates Gap Detection and Frequency Discrimination Abilities in Adult Rats.

Throughout life, sensory systems adapt to the sensory environment to provide optimal responses to relevant tasks. In the case of a developing system, sensory inputs induce changes that are permanent and detectable up to adulthood. Previously, we have shown that rearing rat pups in a complex acoustic environment (spectrally and temporally modulated sound) from postnatal day 14 (P14) to P28 permanently improves the response characteristics of neurons in the inferior colliculus and auditory cortex, influencing tonotopical arrangement, response thresholds and strength, and frequency selectivity, a

Evaluating the effects of olivocochlear feedback on psychophysical measures of frequency selectivity.

Frequency selectivity was evaluated under two conditions designed to assess the influence of a "precursor" stimulus on auditory filter bandwidths. The standard condition consisted of a short masker, immediately followed by a short signal. The precursor condition was identical except a 100-ms sinusoid at the signal frequency (i.e., the precursor) was presented before the masker. The standard and precursor conditions were compared for measurements of psychophysical tuning curves (PTCs), and notched noise tuning characteristics. Estimates of frequency selectivity were significantly broader in the

Salicylate-induced changes in auditory thresholds of adolescent and adult rats.

Shifts in auditory intensity thresholds after salicylate administration were examined in postweanling and adult pigmented rats at frequencies ranging from 1 to 35 kHz. A total of 132 subjects from both age levels were tested under two-way active avoidance or one-way active avoidance paradigms. Estimated thresholds were inferred from behavioral responses to presentations of descending and ascending series of intensities for each test frequency value. Reliable threshold estimates were found under both avoidance conditioning methods, and compared to controls, subjects at both age levels showed th

[Evoked otoacoustic emissions and middle ear function].

Transiently evoked otoacustic emissions (TEOAE) recorded in 98 ears were compared depending on the results of tympanometry. The values of middle ear pressure in patients without detectable TEOAE are significantly smaller compared to those of patients with detectable TEOAE. In cases of detectable TEOAE, the amplitudes and frequency components were compared to the results of tympanometry. When maximal compliances are shifted towards negative values of middle ear pressure, the amplitudes of TEOAE are reduced with a loss of low frequency components. Small compliance values result in reduced amplit
