Effect of population structure and size on aggregation behavior of Cimex lectularius (Hemiptera: Cimicidae).

The bed bug, Cimex lectularius L. (Hemiptera: Cimicidae), occurs in aggregations until the conditions are no longer beneficial, leading to dispersal. Active and passive bed bug dispersal causes migrations from main aggregations either within a room, from room to room within a building, or from building to building. Because bed bug movement is an important factor in the spread of infestations, we wanted to determine how population structure and size affect bed bug aggregations. Engorged bed bugs were placed in glass petri dish arenas at varying densities, sex ratios, and population compositions

[Impact of aerial mosquito control on populations of Aedes aegypti in two communities of Abidjan].

INTRODUCTION: From May 2nd to 13th 1997, an aerial mosquito control took place in Abidjan. This mosquitoes control has been undertaken by the municipality. He made two Ultra Low Volume (ULV) applications of d eltamethrine (K O thrineR). The second application took place one week after the first one. Each application used 2g per ha of deltamethrine diluted with gasoil. MATERIALS AND METHOD: We evaluated the impact of this mosquitoes control on Aedes aegypti populations in two districts : Port-Bouët and Yopougon. We compared the bite number per person and per day obtained by catching mosquitoes

The effects of climatic factors on the distribution and abundance of malaria vectors in Kenya.

Since 1988 malaria epidemics have occurred in multiple sites in western Kenya highlands. Climatic variability has been associated with some of the recent epidemics. We examined influences of climatic factors on the distribution and abundance of three malaria vector species, Anopheles gambiae, Anopheles arabiensis, and Anopheles funestus in western Kenya and in the Great Rift Valley. Mosquito samples were collected from the lowland and highland areas with various climatic conditions. The three vector species were abundant in the lower part of western Kenya. An. arabiensis was not found in the a

Integrated control measures against Culex quinquefasciatus, the vector of filariasis in Recife.

Integrated control measures against Culex quinquefasciastus have been implemented in a pilot urban area in Recife, Brazil. About 3,000 breeding sites found within the operational area were responsible for very high mosquito densities recorded during the pretrial period. Physical control measures have been applied to cess pits before starting a series of 37 treatments of the other sites with Bacillus sphaericus strain 2362, over 27 months. In spite of the difficulties due to environmental conditions, very significant reductions in preimaginal population of C. quinquefasciatus were achieved and,

Breeding places and seasonal incidence of Aedes aegypti, as assessed by the single-larva survey method.

The single-larva survey method was employed to study the breeding places and seasonal incidence of Aedes aegypti in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. From May 1968 to May 1969, 28 462 containers of water-located in approximately equal numbers indoors and outdoors-were investigated. The highest frequency of breeding (8.0%) of A. aegypti was observed in tires and motor parts. Drums, barrels, water-pots, and other receptacles left outdoors showed a higher frequency (3.1%) than those kept indoors (0.6%). Metal containers were infested to a greater extent than those made of mud, wood, or other materials; 2.

Spatial heterogeneity of the nonlinear impact of built environment on suburban railway commuting willingness: Taking Guiyang Loop Line Railway as an example.

This study takes the Guiyang Loop Line Railway as a case study and, based on resident commuting survey data, applies an XGBoost model combined with Individual Conditional Expectation (ICE) analysis to examine the threshold effects and non-linear spatial characteristics of the built environment on residents' willingness to commute via the Loop Line Railway. The results indicate that: (1) population density, distance to the nearest bus stop, road network density, and distance to the city center are key built environment factors influencing commuting willingness. Among them, population density an…

An Automated Population Monitoring Framework for Larus ridibundus in Kunming City Based on Improved YOLOv8 and ByteTrack.

The Larus ridibundus (L. ridibundus), a prominent part of Kunming's landscape, attracts many tourists and boosts the local tourism industry. Effective population monitoring of this species matters for wetland environment evaluation, biodiversity conservation, and ecological civilization construction. Currently, L. ridibundus population statistics mainly rely on manual methods, which are labor-intensive and inefficient. To overcome these limits, we propose a deep learning (DL) framework. It automatically recognizes and counts L. ridibundus by combining CDSP2-YOLOv8n with ByteTrack, aiming to ef

Proposed Economic Threshold for Diceraeus melacanthus (Dallas) in Maize Under an Early Intercrop Cultivation System.

The Antecipe® system, in which maize is sown between soybean rows while soybean plants are still in the reproductive stage, reduces the production cycle of the soybean-maize crop system and, consequently, mitigate climatic risk for second-crop maize. However, the coexistence of both crops can intensify the 'green bridge,' favoring outbreaks of Diceraeus melacanthus. Thus, this study evaluated the host preference of D. melacanthus and the damage caused by different population densities to support management strategies in this system. The preference test was conducted in the greenhouse using cag

Effects of active forest management on host-seeking tick density and infection prevalence: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Hard-bodied ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) pose a major public health threat, transmitting multiple pathogens among humans and wildlife worldwide. Research has investigated how anthropogenic land use change impacts tick density and infection prevalence in temperate forests, including the effects of active forest management practices like prescribed burning, invasive vegetation removal and timber harvesting. However, studies' results are inconsistent and seemingly context-dependent, making it difficult for land managers, landowners and policy makers to identify whether management addresses the public

Evaluating sampling techniques for quantifying Asiatic garden beetle (Maladera formosae) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) infestations in commercial mint.

The Asiatic garden beetle, Maladera formosae Brenske (AGB), has become a significant pest of commercial mint fields in northern Indiana. Larval feeding on mint roots can cause stunted growth and plant death when densities are high. Sampling approaches that provide reliable estimates of larval densities in mint have not been established, leaving farmers without the knowledge necessary to implement integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. To address this knowledge gap, we evaluated strategies for estimating AGB larval densities and plant performance in commercial mint systems. We used 2 samp

Trioecy is maintained as a time-stable mating system in the pink sea urchin Toxopneustes roseus from the Mexican Pacific.

Trioecy is a sexual system that consists of the co-occurrence of females, males and hermaphrodites in a population and is common in plants; … eck, are more vulnerable to high temperatures than other sea urchins inhabiting the area, while its population density is significantly lower. These conditions generate a strongly stressed environment, which is the determining factor that maintains the stability of trioecy in the species in which it has been studied.

Presence-Absence Sampling Plans for Stink Bugs (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) in the Midwest Region of the United States.

Stink bugs represent an increasing risk to soybean production in the Midwest region of the United States. The current sampling protocol for stink bugs in this region is tailored for population density estimation and thus is more relevant to research purposes. A practical decision-making framework with more efficient sampling effort for management of herbivorous stink bugs is needed. Therefore, a binomial sequential sampling plan was developed for herbivorous stink bugs in the Midwest region. A total of 146 soybean fields were sampled across 11 states using sweep nets in 2016, 2017, and 2018. T…

Experimental evaluation of spatial capture-recapture study design.

A principal challenge impeding strong inference in analyses of wild populations is the lack of robust and long-term data sets. Recent advanc … on is warranted when assigning biological interpretation to these parameters. However, estimates of population density remain robust to design except when the configuration of detectors grossly violates existing recommendations.

Yellow fever in Brazil threatens successful recovery of endangered golden lion tamarins.

The golden lion tamarin is an endangered primate endemic to Brazil's Atlantic Forest. Centuries of deforestation reduced numbers to a few hundred individuals in isolated forest fragments 80 km from Rio de Janeiro city. Intensive conservation action including reintroduction of zoo-born tamarins into forest fragments 1984-2000, increased numbers to about 3,700 in 2014. Beginning in November 2016, southeastern Brazil experienced the most severe yellow fever epidemic/epizootic in the country in 80 years. In May 2018, we documented the first death of a golden lion tamarin due to yellow fever. We re

Differentiating causality and correlation in allometric scaling: ant colony size drives metabolic hypometry.

Metabolic rates of individual animals and social insect colonies generally scale hypometrically, with mass-specific metabolic rates decreasing with increasing size. Although this allometry has wide ranging effects on social behaviour, ecology and evolution, its causes remain controversial. Because it is difficult to experimentally manipulate body size of organisms, most studies of metabolic scaling depend on correlative data, limiting their ability to determine causation. To overcome this limitation, we experimentally reduced the size of harvester ant colonies (Pogonomyrmex californicus) and q

Estimating the size of key populations: current status and future possibilities.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Estimation of key population sizes is essential for advocacy, program planning, and monitoring of HIV epidemics in these populations. A review of recent publications on population size estimation among key populations including MSM, people who inject drugs, and male and female sex workers was conducted to identify and assess current practices at the global level. RECENT FINDINGS: Studies have used multiple methods including capture-recapture, service multiplier, and unique object multiplier. Other studies apply census and enumeration, often before implementation of a behavi

The relationship between deer density, tick abundance, and human cases of Lyme disease in a residential community.

White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus Zimmerman), serve as the primary host for the adult blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis Say), the vector for Lyme disease, human babesiosis, and human granulocytic anaplasmosis. Our objective was to evaluate the degree of association between deer density, tick abundance, and human cases of Lyme disease in one Connecticut community over a 13-yr period. We surveyed 90-98% of all permanent residents in the community six times from 1995 to 2008 to document resident's exposure to tick-related disease and frequency and abundance of deer observations. After h

Relative abundance of American badger (Taxidea taxus) and red fox (Vulpes vulpes) in landscapes with high and low rodenticide poisoning levels.

Over the past decade, extensive poisoning campaigns have been conducted in southern Saskatchewan to control Richardson's ground squirrel Spermophilus richardsonii (Sabine, 1822) populations. Such campaigns might impact on predator abundance by decreasing prey levels, and also through secondary poisoning. Using spotlighting, we investigated the relative abundance of American badgers Taxidea taxus (Schreber, 1777) and red fox Vulpes vulpes (Linnaeus, 1758) in 2 study areas with road access and crops, but with different levels of poisoning. In the study area with relatively low poisoning (19.6% o
