Immigration detention centers as torturing environments: Ethical reckonings, radical refusals, and implications for a psychology of resistance.

This paper examines psychologists' ethical dilemmas in immigration detention centers. Using critical psychology, border, and detention scholarship, it highlights psychologists' historical complicity in state violence, from the U.S. Enhanced Interrogation Program to current border regimes. We argue that the structural conditions of migrant detention, characterized by profound dehumanization and harm, make ethical psychological practice in these torturing environments impossible. We analyzed the APA Ethics Code guidance, including reforms addressing past abuses and revisions focusing on human ri

Prevalence of psychological disorders, sleep disturbance and stressful life events and their relationships with disease parameters in Chinese patients with ankylosing spondylitis.

Our aim was to investigate the prevalence of psychological disorders, sleep disturbance, and stressful life events in Chinese patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and healthy controls, to assess the correlation between psychological and disease-related variables, and finally to detect powerful factors in predicting anxiety and depression. AS patients diagnosed with the modified New York criteria and healthy controls were enrolled from China. Participants completed a set of questionnaires, including demographic and disease parameters, Zung self-rating anxiety scale (SAS), Zung self-rating

Assessing Stress Level Scores Against Wearables-Driven Physiological Measurements.

Daily stressors elicit physiological and mental responses impacting health, cognition, and behaviour. Accurately assessing psychological stress responses in natural settings remains challenging despite extensive research, though wrist-worn devices have the potential to address this gap through remote data collection. The Garmin fitness tracker provides a stress score largely based on HRV which must be validated prior to use in research. This study aimed to (1) predict psychological self-reported stress from physiological measurements and Garmin calculated stress score, and (2) assess the stres

Who are the 'social Darwinists'? On dispositional determinants of perceiving the social world as competitive jungle.

The naive social Darwinism, also called the Competitive Jungle Belief (CJB), according to the theory of the Dual-Process Motivational (DPM) model, is recognized as an expanded perceptual scheme acting as a cognitive mediator between deep individual characteristics and the area of socio-political attitudes and ideologies. This article aims to show the individual differences that can be dispositional characteristics to believe in the Competitive Jungle scheme's principles. The presented studies' main theoretical question is to find out whether the CJB bases on positive "individual resources" or

Exploring Electrophysiological Responses to Hypnosis in Patients with Fibromyalgia.

Background/Objectives: Hypnosis shows great potential for managing patients suffering from fibromyalgia and chronic pain. Several studies have highlighted its efficacy in improving pain, quality of life, and reducing psychological distress. Despite its known feasibility and efficacy, the mechanisms of action remain poorly understood. Building on these insights, this innovative study aims to assess neural activity during hypnosis in fibromyalgia patients using high-density electroencephalography (EEG) and self-reported measures. Methods: Thirteen participants with fibromyalgia were included in

Vocal display rules in everyday life: when is it appropriate to laugh, sigh or scream?

The appropriateness of common nonverbal vocalizations is guided by social norms, known as display rules. This preregistered, 7-day experience-sampling study examined how perceived appropriateness varies across situations. A total of 142 adults completed three surveys per day (2670 surveys total; 3821 vocalizations), rating appropriateness alongside situational cues and psychological situation characteristics. Laughter and sighs were most often judged appropriate, whereas screams and retches were least. Appropriateness was higher at home and in social places (e.g. parties) than in work/school o

Understanding false positives in control conditions: a simulation study of post-hoc testing in low-powered neuroimaging trials.

Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are essential for evaluating treatment efficacy, typically comparing active interventions to control conditions. In situations where blinding is impractical-such as in psychological therapies or physical rehabilitation-waitlist controls are often used to account for natural symptom progression and test-retest variability. This study examines the biases introduced by post-hoc analyses under conditions of low statistical power, particularly in neuroimaging research. Through large-scale simulations involving 100 million datasets with varying sample sizes, treat

A Novel Neurofeedback Attentional Enhancement Approach Based on Virtual Reality.

Attention enhancement can not only improve individual's study and work performance, but also help to improve such psychological problems as anxiety and depression. Traditional attention enhancement approaches have high requirements on the external environment, and thus have such limitations as long intervention periods, high costs, poor universality, and insignificant therapeutic effects. Virtual Reality (VR) can provide interactive and immersive environments, which can help to break through these limitations and effectively enhance users' attention. In this paper, we propose a novel neurofeed

Mind-Body Interventions, Psychological Stressors, and Quality of Life in Stroke Survivors.

Background and Purpose- Psychological stressors, including poststroke depression, poststroke anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder, are highly prevalent in stroke survivors. These symptoms exact a significant toll on stroke survivors. Clinical and research efforts in stroke recovery focus on motor disability, speech and language deficits, and cognitive dysfunction while largely neglecting psychological stressors. Evidence suggests mind-body interventions in other chronic illness populations decrease symptoms of depression, regulate immune responses, and promote resilience, yet similar stu

The Impact of BWM-T Versus Brief Mindfulness Induction on Stress, Anxiety and Self-Efficacy in University Students: Immediate and Short-Term Outcomes of RCT on Psychological Well-Being and Autonomic Balance.

BACKGROUND: University students face increasing levels of stress, anxiety, and self-efficacy, which may disrupt autonomic balance. While many mind-body interventions require sustained practice, growing evidence suggests that even a single session can yield immediate benefits. This randomized controlled trial compared the immediate and short-term effects of the brain wave modulation technique (BWM-T) and a brief mindfulness induction on psychological and physiological outcomes in university students. METHODS: 68 students were randomly assigned to either BWM-T or a brief mindfulness induction.

The revenge motive: a developmental perspective on the life cycle and the treatment process.

In this article, vengeance and other manifestations of aggression and hostility are differentiated, then the developmental origins and later manifestations of the revenge motive through the life cycle are traced. Consideration is given to each phase of the life cycle, each of which may impart its distinctive stamp onto the patient's desires for revenge. Consistent with this developmental perspective, it is pointed out that desires for revenge may have important adaptive functions, helping the patient contain anxieties associated with developmental tasks that have not been mastered. A brief cas

Insight, rumination, and self-reflection as predictors of well-being.

Dispositional private self-focused attention variables such as insight, internal self-awareness (ISA), and self-reflectiveness (SR) have been found to relate to well-being. The present study sought to determine which dispositional private self-focused attention variables have the most predictive power for subjective well-being as measured by the Satisfaction With Life Scale (E. Diener, R. A. Emmons, R. J. Larsen, & S. Griffin, 1985) and for a eudaemonic form of well-being as measured by the Psychological Well-Being Scale (C. D. Ryff, 1989). A total of 121 college student participants completed

The Role of Emotional Entitlement, Gratitude, and Social Support in Psychological Adjustment During Radiotherapy: A Longitudinal Study.

A cancer diagnosis is frequently accompanied by significant psychological distress, particularly during radiotherapy (RT). Given that many established risk factors for distress are largely immutable, identifying resilience resources that promote adjustment during RT is a central clinical priority. The present longitudinal study examined whether emotional entitlement, gratitude, and perceived social support predict end-of-treatment anxiety, depression, and life satisfaction beyond baseline psychological status. Participants were 146 cancer patients undergoing RT (Mean age = 56.17 years, SD = 11

'Girls need to strengthen each other as a group': experiences from a gender-sensitive stress management intervention by youth-friendly Swedish health services--a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Mental health problems among young people, and girls and young women in particular, are a well-known health problem. Such gendered mental health patterns are also seen in conjunction with stress-related problems, such as anxiety and depression and psychosomatic complaints. Thus, intervention models tailored to the health care situation experienced by young women within a gendered and sociocultural context are needed. This qualitative study aims to illuminate young women's experiences of participating in a body-based, gender-sensitive stress management group intervention by youth-fr
