BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: A simplified method of monitoring intraocular pressure (IOP) during pneumatic retinopexy was devised and used clinically to decrease the risk of complications associated with unnecessary IOP elevation.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Intraoperative IOP and IOP immediately after sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) injection were monitored during pneumatic retinopexy in 22 eyes with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. Intraoperative IOP was measured with a sphygmomanometer connected to the side of a gas-filled syringe.

Pressure ulcers appear as localized chronic wounds in the middle of normal functioning skin. This study focuses on pressure ulcer fibroblasts cultured from the ulcer bed, ulcer margin, and normal, nonulcerated skin adjacent to the wound. Local care of pressure ulcers includes wound cleansing, débridement, and dressings. Wound cleansing should remove loose debris and exudate but should not damage viable tissue. Infravesical obstruction can only be diagnosed objectively from a urodynamic pressure-flow study. Analysis of the resulting data is not straightforward. In the 1993 survey, the prevalence of pressure ulcers was 11.1% in 177 hospitals. This is higher than the 9.2 prevalence rate Meehan found in 1989. The sacrum, with 38% (n = 2,168) of all reported ulcers, remains the most common site for pressure ulcer occurrence. Non-reactive hyperemia sites, Stage I, were responsible for most reported ulcers, at 46.95% (n = 2,839), while Stage II ulcers comprised 32.66% (n = 1,975). Mechanical ventilation increases superior vena cava pressure and should theoretically increase episcleral venous pressure and intraocular pressure (IOP). In 27 patients with clinically identified idiopathic left varicocele, a retrograde venography and a combined pressure measurement in the vena cava, vena renalis and vena spermatica was performed. Intraosseous pressure was measured in the lunate of 10 patients undergoing surgery for Kienböck's disease. Using the styloid process of the radius and the capitate as reference points of bone pressure, I found a stasis rather than arterial insufficiency in the lunate.
