Physical well-being and ethnic inequality in New Zealand prisons, 1840-1975.

The British colonization of New Zealand after 1840 was marked by an unusual concern compared to other settler colonies for incorporating the … erences in incarceration rates. Using a dataset of all extant registers of men entering New Zealand prisons we show change over time in convictions and in height. The adult statures of Māori and Pākehā were similar for men born before 1900 but marked differences emerged among cohorts born during the twentieth century. By World War II the gap in adult stat …

Gambling and problem gambling among recently sentenced women in new zealand prisons.

Ninety-four recently sentenced women prisoners were interviewed to assess aspects of their gambling involvement, problem gambling and relationships between gambling and criminal offending. A third of the women, on the basis of their SOGS-R scores, were assessed as lifetime probable pathological gamblers and just under a quarter were assessed as probable pathological gamblers during the 6 months prior to imprisonment. For women prisoners, a preference for non-casino gaming machines and housie were predictive of problem gambling. Relative to non-problem gamblers, problem gamblers experienced hig

"When you've been living in darkness, the light suddenly becomes frightening" - prisoners' experiences of health promotion in a Norwegian prison.

PURPOSE: A settings-based approach to health promotion emphasizes everyday environments in shaping health. Prisons are, therefore, potentially important arenas for health promotion. However, the inherent restriction of prisoner agency presents a fundamental challenge in this regard. There is a gap in qualitative research on prisoners' perspectives on health-related topics and a need for greater understanding of health promotion within prisons. This study aims to explore male prisoners' experiences of a Norwegian low-security prison as a setting for health promotion. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROAC…

Ethical issues in conducting health research with people in prison: Results of a deliberative research project conducted with people in Australian prisons.

Planning research involving people in prison raises concerns based on past abuses of incarcerated people amongst other factors. Despite the development of guidelines for the ethical conduct of research in prisons, researchers and advocates have questioned whether current approaches aimed at protecting incarcerated persons from unethical research unfairly exclude this group from participating in and benefitting from research. Discussion of these issues comes mostly from expert opinion. An absent voice is that of people in prison. This study identifies the key ethical issues according to people …

Prevalence of psychiatric disorders among sentenced prisoners in a medium security prison in Ghana: Implications for mental health assessment and service.

BACKGROUND: Extant literature has shown that there is a higher prevalence of mental disorders among prisoners compared to the general population. These findings have, however, mostly been from high-income and westernised cultures. In Ghana, little is known about the extent of psychiatric disorders among prisoners, as is consistent with the dearth of scholarly work in low and middle-income countries. AIMS: Our aim was to determine the prevalence of common mental disorders among sentenced prisoners in the second largest prison in Ghana. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey research design was use

The association of prison security level with mortality after release from prison: a retrospective national cohort study (2000-16).

BACKGROUND: Incarceration might contribute to increased mortality in an already marginalised population. A better understanding of the prison-related factors that are associated with mortality is important for preventing the negative health consequences of incarceration. We aimed to investigate all-cause and cause-specific mortality following release from high-security and low-security prisons. METHODS: In this retrospective national cohort study, we used data from the Norwegian Prison Release study (nPRIS), which includes complete national register data for 96 859 individuals from the Norweg…

Women, prisons, and freedom: experiences of former female inmates from the prison system in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

This article analyzes vulnerabilities and prospects of restructuring the lives of women who experienced maternity in prison. This qualitative study was performed with a thematic analysis of the reports of women released from the prison system who experienced pregnancy and delivery in a female penitentiary in a Southern Brazilian capital. Three thematic categories were identified: "Between rupture and freedom", a category focused on the description of moments before the borderline date for the child's stay with the mother in prison, which produces great expectations due to the possibility of wo

Associated factors to depression diagnosed during incarceration in Peruvian male prisoners: a sub-analysis of the national census of prison population.

PURPOSE: Depression has become a major health concern, particularly in developing countries. This disorder is highly prevalent among certain vulnerable populations, such as prisoners. In Peru, prisons are overcrowded, and the health of prisoners is neglected. Thus, this study aims to estimate the prevalence of depression diagnosed during incarceration in male inmates from all Peruvian prisons and assess its associated factors. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: A cross-sectional study was conducted based on the secondary data analysis of the National Census of Prison Population 2016 in Peru. This s…

Efficacy of prison-based cognitive behavioral rehabilitation intervention on violent sexual behaviors among sex offenders in Nigerian prisons.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Evidence showed that reoffending habits are increasing among offenders with violent sexual behaviors. Given the recidivism rates, a psychotherapeutic intervention becomes imperative. This study examined the efficacy of prison-based cognitive behavioral rehabilitation intervention (PCBRI) on violent sexual behaviors among sex offenders in Nigerian prisons. METHOD: A total of45 participants were the sample size. Compulsive Sexual Behavior Inventory and Hypersexual Behavior Inventory were employed in assessing the participants at 3 points. Using a simple random allocation s…

Asistencial and therapeutic continuity after release from prison: an urgent problem that requires solutions. The model applied in Catalonian prisons.

Deficits in health after being released are common, even with a higher risk of death. In these cases, the main cause of death is the use of … inside and outside the prison and apply support measures. We present the project implemented in the prisons of Catalonia, which the "nurse of liaison" has used as a key figure in the process. We also present the internal and external procedure used to facilitate the transfer of sanitary and therapeutic information, to link released patients to health devi …

Improving the quality of prison research: A qualitative study of ex-offender service user involvement in prison suicide prevention research.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is the leading cause of avoidable death in prisons worldwide and suicide prevention is an international priority. Consequently, there is an urgent need to develop evidence-based treatments. We conducted a randomized controlled trial of a novel suicide prevention psychological therapy for male prisoners. To promote ecological validity by addressing the "real-world" situation of suicidal prisoners, we involved a consultant group of ex-offenders with past experience of being suicidal during imprisonment. Service user involvement in prison research is challenging and underdevel…

Within-prison drug injection among HIV-infected Ukrainian prisoners: prevalence and correlates of an extremely high-risk behaviour.

BACKGROUND: In Ukraine, HIV-infection, injection drug use, and incarceration are syndemic; however, few services are available to incarcerated people who inject drugs (PWIDs). While data are limited internationally, within-prison drug injection (WP-DI) appears widespread and may pose significant challenges in countries like Ukraine, where PWIDs contribute heavily to HIV incidence. To date, WP-DI has not been specifically examined among HIV-infected prisoners, the only persons that can transmit HIV. METHODS: A convenience sample of 97 HIV-infected adults recently released from prison within 1-

Comparative prices of diverted buprenorphine/naloxone and buprenorphine in a UK prison setting: a cross-sectional survey of drug using prisoners.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence regarding the abuse potential of buprenorphine in prison settings. There is also emerging evidence from community settings that buprenorphine/naloxone is less amenable to abuse than the single preparation buprenorphine hydrochloride as evidenced by cost-differentials of diverted medication. This study sought to explore cost-differentials within a prison setting of diverted buprenorphine/naloxone medication relative to either single preparation buprenorphine hydrochloride or methadone. METHODS: Cross-sectional survey in one remand prison. RESULTS: A total of 85 p
