The effect of transcranial direct current stimulation on contrast sensitivity and visual evoked potential amplitude in adults with amblyopia.

Amblyopia is a neurodevelopmental disorder of vision that occurs when the visual cortex receives decorrelated inputs from the two eyes during an early critical period of development. Amblyopic eyes are subject to suppression from the fellow eye, generate weaker visual evoked potentials (VEPs) than fellow eyes and have multiple visual deficits including impairments in visual acuity and contrast sensitivity. Primate models and human psychophysics indicate that stronger suppression is associated with greater deficits in amblyopic eye contrast sensitivity and visual acuity. We tested whether trans…

Assessment of Chemosensory Function Using "Sniffin' Sticks", Taste Strips, Taste Sprays, and Retronasal Olfactory Tests.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 5% of the general population is affected by functional anosmia. An additional 15% exhibit decreased olfactory function. Many of these individuals ask ENT-doctors or neurologists for help. A cornerstone of the counselling process is the assessment of olfactory function. The aim of this work is to give a differentiated overview about the administration of commonly used psychophysical tests for olfactory and gustatory function including their normative data. CONCLUSION: The use of standardized, reliable and validated tools is mandatory to provide patients with state-of

Optimizing Transcutaneous Electrical Stimulation Based on Frequency-Dependent Tissue Modeling and Signal Analysis.

Transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TES) is limited by cutaneous discomfort caused by unavoidable activation of superficial sensory nerves during current delivery to deep targets. While psychophysical studies have empirically identified waveforms that reduce skin sensation, existing computational models typically employ quasi-static approximations that neglect the pronounced dielectric dispersion of biological tissues, leaving the biophysical mechanisms poorly understood. We developed a finite-element model of the human forearm incorporating the frequency-dependent dielectric properties of

Empowering operators: Ergonomic advances in cylindrical lawnmower design.

BackgroundLawnmower operators are exposed to high noise and hand-arm vibration (HAV) during their work, which originates mainly from the engine and rotating parts. Higher exposure causes intangible issues for the well-being of the operators, results in immediate and long-term effects on the health, comfort, and safety of the operators.ObjectiveThe study involved measuring noise and HAV from a powered cylindrical lawnmower, developing retrofittable interventions, and evaluating noise and HAV levels with the interventions, and compared their effectiveness using a health risk assessment.MethodsTh

Topological expansion of Boehm's brushes via structured light.

We report an entoptic phenomenon in which the classical two-lobed Boehm's brushes are transformed into a multilobed structure by projecting spin-orbit-coupled light onto the human retina. These structured beams, composed of nonseparable superpositions of circular polarization and orbital angular momentum, produce azimuthally modulated entoptic patterns through polarization-dependent scattering in the retina. Unlike Haidinger's brushes, which arise from dichroic absorption in the macula, the observed effect is driven by angular variations in scattering strength relative to the local polarizatio

Cochlear Tuning in Early Aging Estimated with Three Methods.

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) currently affects over 20 million adults in the U.S. and its prevalence is expected to increase as the population ages. However, little is known about the earliest manifestations of ARHL, including its influence on auditory function beyond the threshold of sensation. This work explores the effects of early aging on frequency selectivity (i.e., "tuning"), a critical feature of normal hearing function. Tuning is estimated using both behavioral and physiological measures-fast psychophysical tuning curves (fPTC), distortion product otoacoustic emission level ratio f

A novel computational approach to pain perception modelling within a Bayesian framework using quantitative sensory testing.

Pain perception can be studied as an inferential process in which prior information influences the perception of nociceptive input. To date, there are no suitable psychophysical paradigms to measure this at an individual level. We developed a quantitative sensory testing paradigm allowing for quantification of the influence of prior expectations versus current nociceptive input during perception. Using a Pavlovian-learning task, we investigated the influence of prior expectations on the belief about the varying strength of association between a painful electrical cutaneous stimulus and a visua

Assessing central sensitization with quantitative sensory testing in inflammatory rheumatic diseases: A systematic review.

The major therapeutic challenge in inflammatory rheumatic diseases is the persistence of pain despite good responses to specific therapies. Central sensitization, which can be assessed clinically by psychophysical measurements, including quantitative sensory testing (QST), is a widely proposed mechanism for chronic pain. In this systematic review, we explored the scientific literature addressing quantitative sensory testing in inflammatory rheumatic diseases. We searched Pubmed and Embase for publications up to December 2021 concerning studies on quantitative sensory testing focusing on pain t

Pain due to Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Is Associated with Deficit of the Endogenous Pain Inhibitory Control.

OBJECTIVES: Although pain is a common complication of the hypermobile type of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, its underlying mechanisms are still an issue of controversy. In this psychophysical study, we aimed at testing small-fiber function and the endogenous pain inhibitory control in patients with pain due to Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. METHODS: In 22 patients with pain due to Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and 22 healthy participants, matched for age and sex, we tested small-fiber function using quantitative sensory testing and the endogenous pain inhibitory control using the conditioned pain modulation (CPM

Impairments in Multisensory Integration after Stroke.

The integration of information from multiple senses leads to a plethora of behavioral benefits, most predominantly to faster and better detection, localization, and identification of events in the environment. Although previous studies of multisensory integration (MSI) in humans have provided insights into the neural underpinnings of MSI, studies of MSI at a behavioral level in individuals with brain damage are scarce. Here, a well-known psychophysical paradigm (the redundant target paradigm) was employed to quantify MSI in a group of stroke patients. The relation between MSI and lesion locati

Macromolecule-suppressed GABA measurements correlate more strongly with behavior than macromolecule-contaminated GABA+ measurements.

The inhibitory neurotransmitter γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is known to be fundamental to the neuronal processes underlying visual orientation and vibrotactile frequency and amplitude discrimination. Previous studies have demonstrated that performance on visual and vibrotactile psychophysics tasks is associated with in vivo measurements of "GABA+" levels - a measure of GABA substantially contaminated by a macromolecular (MM) signal. Here, we establish that these prior findings are indeed driven by the GABA fraction of that signal. Edited magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) was used to measure…

Low-Frequency Stimulation of Silent Nociceptors Induces Secondary Mechanical Hyperalgesia in Human Skin.

Secondary mechanical hyperalgesia to punctate mechanical stimuli and light touch (allodynia) are prominent symptoms in neuropathic pain states. In a combined microneurographic and psychophysical study, we investigated the role of mechano-insensitive (silent) nociceptors regarding induction. Electrical thresholds of mechano-sensitive and silent nociceptors were assessed by microneurography with two closely spaced intracutaneous electrodes (i.c.) and a transcutaneous configuration (t.c.) in the foot dorsum. For t.c. stimulation there was a marked difference between silent (median, quartiles; 60,
