Low- and high-anxious hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome patients: comparison of psychosocial and health variables.

Despite the frequent co-ocurrence of hypermobile Ehler-Danlos syndrome (hEDS) and pathological anxiety, little is known about the psychosocial and health implications of such comorbidity. Our aim was to explore the association between high levels of anxiety and psychosocial (catastrophizing, kinesiophobia, somatosensory amplification, social support and functioning), health (pain, fatigue, BMI, tobacco/alcohol use, depression, diagnosis delay, general health), and sociodemographic factors in people with hEDS. In this cross-sectional study, 80 hEDS patients were divided into two groups accordin

Longitudinal follow-up of naturalistic treatment outcome in patients with trichotillomania.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the longitudinal course of treatment outcome in patients with trichotillomania. The authors conducted a second follow-up assessment on a cohort of hair pullers previously studied. METHOD: Forty-four subjects completed a hair-pulling questionnaire and paper-and-pencil measures of hair-pulling severity and impact, psychosocial functioning, depression, anxiety, and self-esteem. Mean time elapsed between the first and second follow-up assessment was 2.5 years (index evaluation to first follow-up = 3.5 years). RESULTS: Twenty-seven subjects (61.4%) had active tre…

The Stage-Based Psychosocial Adaptation Model for Lung Transplantation (SPA-LT): A Proposed Longitudinal Conceptual Framework for Clinical Care.

Lung transplantation is a life-saving intervention for patients with end-stage respiratory failure, yet it involves a uniquely complex and prolonged psychosocial trajectory. Despite growing recognition of psychological factors, they are often conceptualized as secondary outcomes and assessed at isolated time points rather than across the full transplant process. This conceptual article integrates empirical findings, theoretical perspectives, and clinical expertise to examine psychological functioning and quality of life across pre-transplant, early postoperative, and long-term phases of lung t

Acceptance and commitment therapy for moral injury (ACT-MI) and present-centered therapy for moral injury (PCT-MI): Results from a randomized controlled pilot trial with war zone deployed veterans.

Acceptance and commitment therapy for moral injury (ACT-MI) and present-centered therapy for moral injury (PCT-MI) were developed and piloted through the study. ACT-MI was created to improve psychosocial functioning among veterans experiencing moral injury. PCT-MI was developed as a transdiagnostic process-based moral injury intervention and an active comparison condition for a future ACT-MI efficacy trial. A randomized controlled pilot trial was conducted where 74 war zone-deployed veterans were randomized to ACT-MI or PCT-MI. Aims were to test the acceptability of ACT-MI and PCT-MI, evaluate…

Quality of life, psychological adjustment, and adaptive functioning of patients with intoxication-type inborn errors of metabolism - a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: In recent decades, considerable progress in diagnosis and treatment of patients with intoxication-type inborn errors of metabolism (IT-IEM) such as urea cycle disorders (UCD), organic acidurias (OA), maple syrup urine disease (MSUD), or tyrosinemia type 1 (TYR 1) has resulted in a growing group of long-term survivors. However, IT-IEM still require intense patient and caregiver effort in terms of strict dietetic and pharmacological treatment, and the threat of metabolic crises is always present. Furthermore, crises can affect the central nervous system (CNS), leading to cognitive, b

[Neurocognitive functioning in euthymic patients with bipolar type I disorder].

INTRODUCTION: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic mental disorder that affects 1-3% of the population, and is characterized by affective episodes that alternate with periods of euthymia. Although traditionally patients were thought to return to premorbid functioning levels during the inter-episode periods, recent evidence suggests that cognitive deficits persist even during periods of euthymia, and may impair patients working and functioning status. OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to characterize the neurocognitive and psychosocial functioning in a sample of Portuguese bipolar type I patie…

The psychosocial and educational burden of obsessive-compulsive disorder in youth.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric OCD is associated with functional impairment in multiple environments. However, relatively little is known about the impact of comorbid conditions, as well as OCD severity on psychosocial functioning in this population. Furthermore, most studies did not include a control sample, nor examined differences between children and adolescents. The goal of this investigation was to assess psychosocial functioning and its associations with age, symptom severity, and comorbid conditions in a large well characterized sample of pediatric OCD probands, and controls. METHODS: Particip…

Electroencephalographic abnormalities and 5-year outcome in first-episode psychosis.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relation of electroencephalographic abnormalities to 5-year outcomes in first-episode psychosis (FEP). METHODS: Patients (n = 103) had their baseline electroencephalogram (EEG) classified by modified Mayo Clinic criteria. Symptoms and psychosocial functioning were rated after 5 years of treatment. RESULTS: Dysrhythmic EEG was associated with persistence in positive and negative symptoms of psychoses and poorer psychosocial functioning at 5-year follow-up, independently of other characteristics, such as duration of untreated illness or premorbid adjustment. A higher …

Psychosocial and cognitive determinants of 10-year depressive symptom trajectories in patients with cardiovascular disease: The SMART-Medea Study.

BACKGROUND: Middle-aged and older adults presenting clinically relevant depressive symptoms are often undiagnosed. Understanding the determinants of late-life depressive symptoms could improve prognosis. Further, individuals with manifest cardiovascular disease (CVD) are at an increased risk of depression. This study investigated if psychosocial and cognitive factors are associated with depressive symptom trajectories in individuals with CVD. METHODS: Longitudinal data from the SMART-Medea study of 752 participants (median age 62 years, women 18 %) with a history of CVD was used. Psychosocial

Prevalence and treatment of psychiatric disorders other than psychosis in children and adolescents with 22q11DS: Examining associations with social and role functioning.

Individuals with chromosome 22q11 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) have high rates of psychotic disorders. Less is known about their psychopathology and how it is treated prior to the peak period of risk for psychotic disorder. There is also a lack of evidence on how functioning is impacted by psychopathology in this population. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and treatment of non-psychotic psychiatric disorders, and how these factors are associated with psychosocial functioning in children and adolescents with 22q11DS. 126 individuals with 22q11DS aged 8-17 participated in …

Psychosocial outcome of craniofacial surgery in children.

Thirty-four children between the ages of 7 and 15 years with congenital craniofacial anomalies underwent psychosocial evaluation before and 12 to 18 months after surgery. Also evaluated were healthy children matched to the craniofacial subjects by sex, age, intelligence, and economic background. Preoperative assessment revealed the craniofacial group to have multiple but not severe psychosocial limitations. At follow-up, only a measure of social functioning still differentiated the groups, with the craniofacial subjects experiencing more negative social encounters. Comparison of initial and fo

Trajectories of recovery of social and physical functioning in major depression, dysthymic disorder and double depression: a 3-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Depressive disorders have a large impact on psychosocial functioning. Since lower functioning predicts recurrence of a depressive episode, insight into the post-morbid course of psychosocial functioning of persons with different depressive disorders may facilitate recurrence prevention. METHODS: Data were derived from NEMESIS, an epidemiologic survey in the adult population in the Netherlands. Respondents, who met the CIDI criteria of major depression (MDD; n=102), dysthymic disorder (Dysth; n=66) or double depression (DD; n=73) at baseline, and recovered during three year follow-…

Domain specificity and magnitude of cognitive-psychosocial associations in major depressive disorder: A systematic review and meta-analytic approach with multilevel sensitivity analyses.

Cognitive deficits are a common and persistent feature of major depressive disorder (MDD) and likely account for impaired psychosocial functioning. However, the magnitude, domain specificity, and prospective relevance of the cognitive-psychosocial association remain unclear. This pre-registered systematic review and meta-analysis examined these associations and potential moderators. Six databases were searched for studies assessing cognitive-psychosocial associations in MDD up to February 2026. Effect sizes were synthesised per domain using inverse-variance weighted random-effects meta-analysi…

The value of focusing on psychosocial dysfunction rather than categorical disorders: Commentary on Caspi et al. (2026).

Caspi et al. (see record 2026-80066-001) conducted an ambitious population-level investigation that provided robust support for assortative mating and the transfer of psychiatric dysfunction across generations. These findings are key to our understanding of the nature and clinical utility of the general factor of psychopathology "p" and support the possibility that "p" reflects a nonspecific index of psychosocial dysfunction, where common dysfunction associated with multiple specific behaviors drives psychiatric comorbidity and cross-generational transmissibility. In addition, we argue the fol

Lack of Consensus Across Clinical Guidelines Regarding the Role of Psychosocial Factors Within Low Back Pain Care: A Systematic Review.

It is widely accepted that psychosocial prognostic factors should be addressed by clinicians in their assessment and management of patient suffering from low back pain (LBP). On the other hand, an overview is missing how these factors are addressed in clinical LBP guidelines. Therefore, our objective was to summarize and compare recommendations regarding the assessment and management of psychosocial prognostic factors for LBP chronicity, as reported in clinical LBP guidelines. We performed a systematic search of clinical LBP guidelines (PROSPERO registration number 154730). This search consist

Job dissatisfaction as a contributor to stress-related mental health problems among Japanese civil servants.

Although studies on the association of job dissatisfaction with mental health have been conducted in the past, few studies have dealt with the complicated links connecting job stress, job dissatisfaction, and stress-related illness. This study seeks to determine how job dissatisfaction is linked to common mental health issues. This study surveyed 3,172 civil servants (2,233 men and 939 women) in 1998, taking poor mental functioning, fatigue, and sleep disturbance as stress-related mental health problems. We examine how psychosocial risk factors at work and job dissatisfaction are associated in
