Characterization study of heavy metal-bearing phases in MSW slag.

Slag products derived from the pyrolysis/melting and plasma/melting treatment of municipal solid waste (MSW) in Japan were examined for the characterization study of heavy metal-bearing phases using petrographic techniques. Detailed microscopic observations revealed that the shapes of heavy metal-rich inclusions are generally spherical to semi-spherical and their sizes range from submicron to scarcely large size spheres (over 100 microm). The experiments (both optical microscopy and electron probe microanalysis) indicated that Fe and Cu participate in mutual substitution and different proporti…

Novel technique to enhance phosphorus availability in sewage sludge biochar using wood ash extract to produce an effective circular economy product.

Sewage sludge (or biosolids) produced during wastewater treatment contain significant amounts of phosphorus. Pyrolysis treatment can produce a safe material while sequestering carbon; however, it underutilises the phosphorus in the resulting biochar, leaving it partially inaccessible to plants. Here the effect of doping calcium-rich sewage sludge (14 % calcium) with potassium acetate, combustion wood ash and its water-extract on phosphorus availability, and carbon and nitrogen release during pyrolysis are investigated at 500 and 700 °C. The aim was to produce an effective circular economy mate…

Comparative evaluation of phosphorus recovery from sewage sludge thermal products via magnesium ammonium phosphate and hydroxyapatite methods.

Shortage of phosphorus resource has become a global concern. Due to the high phosphorus content in sewage sludge, phosphorus recovery can be realized from thermal products of sewage sludge. Phosphorus recovery performance of smoldering ash (SA), incineration ash (IA) and pyrolysis char (PC) was investigated. The precipitate rate of phosphorus in acid and alkali leaching solutions is over 94 % by magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP) and hydroxyapatite (HAP) methods. For MAP method, the recovered P contents in the precipitations of SA, IA and PC are 23.25 ± 0.35, 31.71 ± 0.79 and 23.76 ± 0.24 mg/g…

Enhanced phosphorus bioavailability of biochar derived from sewage sludge co-pyrolyzed with K, Ca-rich biomass ash.

Sewage sludge has great potential for phosphorus (P) recovery. However, sewage sludge-derived biochar suffers from low P bioavailability in land application. K, Ca-rich biomass ash was used to co-pyrolyze with sewage sludge to enhance P bioavailability of synthesized biochar. Phase transformation mechanism of P during the co-pyrolysis process was studied. When sunflower straw ash (SSA) was used as an additive (50 wt%) for co-pyrolysis with sludge at 600 °C, the ratio of bioavailable P (Bio-P, determined by 2 wt% citric acid) to total P (TP) of the co-pyrolyzed biochar could achieve 92.1 wt%, w…

Quantifying biochar content in a field soil with varying organic matter content using a two-temperature loss on ignition method.

While the use of biochar as a soil amendment for agronomic and environmental management is gaining popularity, quantification of biochar in soil is still challenging. The objective of this work was to develop a fast, simple and inexpensive method to quantify biochar content in field soil with varying organic matter content - the two-temperature loss on ignition (LOI) method. In this approach, biochar mass fraction in a biochar-amended soil is computed by measuring the dry mass of biochar/soil mixture after heating sequentially at two temperatures: low temperature (LT), and high temperature (HT

Fabrication of photoresist SU-8 pyrolyzed carbon electrodes and their integration in a microfluidic hematocrit detection system.

Carbon microelectrodes are attractive for microfluidic biosensing due to their wide potential window, low overpotentials, chemical stability, and compatibility with low-cost microfabrication. Pyrolysis of photopatterned SU-8 offers a scalable route to carbon electrode fabrication; however, conventional two-step pyrolysis often leads to adhesion issues, geometric distortion, and limited surface area in low-aspect-ratio planar designs. These constraints restrict performance and broader adoption in analytical microdevices. Hematocrit determination, a clinically essential diagnostic measurement, r…

Dual catalytic system using industrial solid waste and zeolite for enhanced aromatic hydrocarbon conversion from waste bamboo biomass.

The present study developed a dual-catalyst system combining typical industrial solid waste (i.e. red mud, coal fly ash, blast furnace slag, red gypsum and anode slag) and zeolite in synergistically promoting the catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) of waste bamboo biomass for aromatics production. The results demonstrated that industrial solid wastes significantly enhanced deoxygenation and decreased the oxygenated compound content by 2.60 % to 26.26 % compared to non-catalytic pyrolysis. Notably, red gypsum exhibited the most pronounced effect, increasing the content of aromatic precursors, such a…

Effect of Different Trace Iron-Doped ZIF-67 Materials for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction.

The development of a catalyst that is efficient, clean, simple, inexpensive, and conducive to a wide range of industrial applications is the key to achieving water electrolysis for hydrogen production. In this paper, iron-doped ZIF-67 materials were synthesized using a one-step hydrothermal method, with the different molar ratios of n (Fe3+): n (Co2+) = 0.05%, 1%, 2%, 5%, 10%. We found that trace amounts of iron greatly changed the particle size of ZIF-67. After high-temperature pyrolysis (400 °C, 600 °C, and 800 °C), the electrochemical results showed that the content of doped iron and differ…

Effect of background interference on accelerant detection by canines.

Additional studies were performed with respect to examining the lower limits at which canines can reliably detect products commonly used as accelerants and distinguish them from pyrolysis products or background hydrocarbons. As part of a testing exercise performed in conjunction with a national conference of the Canine Accelerant Detection Association (CADA), 34 canines were subjected to a series of tests, some of them were a recertification proficiency. In one of the tests, the dogs were nearly unanimously successful in locating one can (out of five) containing 50% evaporated gasoline at the …

Pore structure control of porous carbon obtained from phenol formaldehyde resin and ethylene glycol: the effect of H3BO3 on the pore structure.

Boric acid was used as a source of complexing agent to change phase separation kinetics and dynamics of the resin-glycol system to regulate the pore structure of porous carbon. The results show that the addition of H3BO3 in the resin mixtures can change the polymerization dynamics during curing of resin-glycol mixtures. For the complexation of H3BO3 to diols, the size of the ethylene glycol-rich phase produced during the curing of the resin mixture increase with the increase of the content of H3BO3. Similarly, the pore size of porous carbon after pyrolysis increases with the increase of H3BO3 …

Temperature-dependent molecular evolution of dissolved black carbon and its interaction mechanism with dissimilatory iron reduction.

Pyrolysis temperature regulates the molecular composition of dissolved black carbon (DBC), which influences its electron transfer capacity and stability. However, the impact of these temperature-induced changes on DBC's ability to facilitate microbial dissimilatory iron reduction (DIR), as well as its molecular transformations during the process, remains poorly understood. In this study, DBC samples derived from biochars pyrolyzed at 300, 450, and 600 °C (DBC300, DBC450, and DBC600) were examined for their effectiveness in mediating the microbial reduction of ferrihydrite (Fh). The results sho…
