The influence of genotype and sex on carcass composition, meat quality, digestive system morphometry and leg bone dimensions in Japanese quails (C. coturnix japonica).

Japanese quails (Coturnix japonica) have a high reproductive rate because they reach sexual maturity very early. This short rearing time results in increasing interest among breeders and consumers. The aim of the study was a comparative analysis of two genotypes and sexes of Japanese and Pharaoh quails and their impact on body weight, carcass composition, meat quality, digestive system morphometry and leg bone dimensions. The study involved 40 birds (10 females and 10 males), Japanese quail and Pharaoh quail, 42 days old. Quail genotype had an effect (P < 0.05) on body weight, carcass weight, …

The anorexigenic effect of adrenomedullin in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) involves increased proopiomelanocortin and cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript mRNAs in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus.

Central administration of adrenomedullin (AM), a 52-amino acid peptide, is associated with anorexigenic effects in some species, including rodents and chickens. However, the associated hypothalamic mechanisms remain unclear and it is unknown if this peptide exerts satiety-inducing effects in other avian species. The objective of this study was thus to investigate AM-induced anorexigenic effects in 7-day-old Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica). After intracerebroventricular injection of 0.3, 1.0, or 3.0 nmol of AM, quail injected with 3.0 nmol of AM ate and drank less than vehicle-injected quail…

Activating nuclear xenobiotic receptors and triggering ER stress and hepatic cytochromes P450 systems in quails (Coturnix C. coturnix) during atrazine exposure.

Atrazine (ATR) is one of the most widely detected contaminant in the ecosystem. Nuclear xenobiotic receptors are activated by herbicides and induce the transcription of CYP450 isoforms involved in xenobiotic metabolism and transport. However, little is known about hepatic nuclear xenobiotic receptors in birds are responsible for ATR-induced hepatotoxicity via regulating the cytochrome P450 enzyme systems (CYP450s). The objective of this study was to investigate the mechanism of ATR hepatotoxicity in quails. For this purpose, male quails were dosed by oral gavage from sexual immaturity to matur…

Effects of naturally oxidized n-3 oil sources on performance, egg quality, yolk fatty acid profile, serum biochemical parameters and liver histopathology in laying Japanese quail.

Although n-3-rich oils are widely used to improve the fatty acid profile of eggs, their susceptibility to oxidation may reduce their nutritional benefits and adversely affect animal health. However, the effects of naturally oxidized n-3 oil sources in laying Japanese quail remain unclear. This study therefore evaluated the effects of naturally oxidized plant and animal oil sources on productive performance, egg quality, egg yolk fatty acid profile, serum biochemical parameters, and liver histopathology. A total of 160 laying Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) were assigned to four die…

Fumonisin B1 induces endoplasmic reticulum damage and inflammation by activating the NXR response and disrupting the normal CYP450 system, leading to liver damage in juvenile quail.

Fumonisin B1 (FB1) is a mycotoxin affecting animal health through the food chain and has been closely associated with several diseases such as pulmonary edema in pigs and diarrhea in poultry. FB1 is mainly metabolized in the liver. Although a few studies have shown that FB1 causes liver damage, the molecular mechanism of liver damage is unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the role of liver damage, nuclear xenobiotic receptor (NXR) response and cytochrome P450 (CYP450)-mediated defense response during FB1 exposure. A total of 120 young quails were equally divided into two groups (control and …

Different patterns of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP)-immunoreactive and acetylcholinesterase (AChE)-positive innervation in the internal carotid artery and cerebral arterial tree of the quail.

The innervation pattern of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide-immunoreactive (VIP-IR) nerves in the quail internal carotid artery (ICA) and cerebral arterial tree was investigated and compared with that of acetylcholinesterase-positive (AChE-P) nerves. The supply of VIP-IR nerves to the two arterial systems was distinctly richer than that of AChE-P nerves. It was focused mainly on the walls from the distal ICA to the caudal half of the anterior ramus (AR) through the cerebral carotid artery (CCA). Indeed, double staining clearly showed that numerous VIP+/AChE-axons were distributed over these a…
