Estimation of genetic risks of exposure to ionizing radiation: status in the year 2000.

This paper provides an overview of the advances in the estimation of genetic risks of exposure of human populations to ionizing radiation with particular emphasis on the advances during the last decade. Among the latter are: (a) an upward revision of the estimates of the baseline frequencies of Mendelian diseases (from 1.25 to 2.4%); (b) the conceptual change to the use of a doubling dose based on human data on spontaneous mutation rates and mouse data on induced mutation rates (from the one based entirely on mouse data on spontaneous and induced mutation rates, which was the case thus far); (

Changes in the pattern of growth in stature related to prenatal exposure to ionizing radiation.

PURPOSE: To examine the pattern and spurt in growth and development of prenatally exposed atomic-bomb survivors and to determine whether a statistically significant radiation-related growth retardation exists. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The stature of 1566 individuals exposed prenatally to the atomic bombings has been employed to study the effect of such exposure on growth. Among these survivors, 30 were severely mentally retarded, and 66 individuals on whom no physical measurements between ages 9 and 19 exist were excluded from this study. Thus this analysis rests on the measurements obtained on

[The mechanisms of ulcerogenesis in liver pathology in persons exposed to the action of ionizing radiation].

A total of 92 patients with duodenal ulcer (DU) who took part in the elimination of aftereffects of Chernobyl accident in 1986 were examined. Of these, 46 patients (group I) developed DU against the background of persisting hepatitis. The above patients demonstrated significant increase in the peripheral blood levels of hemoglobin and red cell count as well as immunoglobulins of all classes and circulating immune complexes in blood serum. By far the commonest among group I patients (compared to group II) were such events as allergization of the organism and duodenogastric reflux. Based on the

A critical look at the association of human genetic syndromes with sensitivity to ionizing radiation.

Individuals with inherited heterozygosity for mutations involving tumor suppressor genes may be at greater risk for ionizing radiation-induced cancer even though their cells may not show increased cytotoxicity or chromosome damage. In addition, many human genetic syndromes have been reported to show increased sensitivity to ionizing radiation. In most instances the effects are small and/or not reproducible. Only in the genetic disease ataxia-telangiectasia (AT) is radiosensitivity consistently outside the normal range. Even AT heterozygotes (0.68 to 7.7% of the population) appear to be slightl

[Restoration of the skin of mice following damages cause by ionizing radiation and hyperthermia].

The half-period of mouse skin regeneration after sublethal injuries caused by hyperthermia (44 degrees C) was 2.9 h and completed within 16-24 h. The half-period of regeneration after sublethal injuries caused by ionizing radiation was 2.1 h at a dose of 5 Gy and 4.3 at a dose of 20 Gy. The rate of mouse skin regeneration after sublethal injuries caused by exposure to ionizing radiation only and in combination with hyperthermia at similar levels of injury did not differ.

Influence of temperature on the activity of ciliated cells during exposure to ionizing radiation.

The influence of temperature on the early effects ionizing irradiation has been analysed using the trachea of the rabbit. ATP is assumed to be released by the effect of irradiation on the mitochondrial membranes, which increases the mucociliary activity in the epithelium, registered second-by-second during irradiation performed at 20 degrees C, 30 degrees C, 37 degrees C and 40 degrees C. The early effects of irradiation depended on the temperature, while hyperthermia does not potentiate this condition. A possible explanation is that phosphofructokinase, which is probably stimulated by irradia

Occupational Prenatal Radiation Exposure and Occupational Safety: Position Paper for Pregnant and breastfeeding Personnel in Interventional Procedures with Ionizing Radiation.

The increasing number of women working in medical surgical professions involving ionizing radiation creates new challenges for the safety of both pregnant and breastfeeding employees and the management of prenatal radiation exposure. The aim of this manuscript is to discuss the biological effects of loosely-ionizing radiation, evaluate the associated risks, and discuss the principles of German radiation protection law in the context of pregnancy and breastfeeding. To assess the effects of prenatal radiation exposure, we reviewed relevant sources such as reports from the German Commission on Rad

Health effects of ionizing radiation exposure in the brain: MELODI perspectives on potential implications of emerging evidence for radiation protection.

There is a growing body of epidemiological evidence for elevated risks of a variety of multifactorial diseases such as cancer, neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., Parkinson's disease and dementia) and cerebrovascular diseases (e.g., stroke) following radiation exposure of the brain. Implications of available scientific evidence for radiation protection need to be assessed, e.g., in terms of radiation effect classification (tissue reactions vs stochastic effects), dose and dose-rate effectiveness, target identification (at levels of cells, tissues and organs inside/outside the brain) for dose mon

Interactions between ionizing radiation and Vairimorpha (Nosema) ceranae on the honeybee, Apis mellifera L.

The global decline of honeybee colonies represents a major ecological concern, primarily attributed to simultaneous exposure to multiple stressors. These include biotic pressures, such as parasitic infections, and abiotic pressures, such as exposure to ionizing radiation, which remains poorly understood. Assessing their combined effects provides novel insights into how biological and radiological stressors interact within the organism. Here, we investigated the individual and combined effects of Vairimorpha ceranae (formerly Nosema ceranae) infection and chronic gamma irradiation (14 µGy/h or

Silencing GPx1 Synergizes with Ionizing Radiation to Enhance the Elimination of Leukemia Stem Cells.

Leukemia stem cells (LSCs) are a key factor leading to the recurrence and drug resistance in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Notably, the persistence of radiotherapy-resistant LSCs has been identified as a critical determinant of post-hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) relapse. Herein, we report glutathione peroxidase 1 (GPX1) as a promising target for eliminating LSCs after exposure to ionizing radiation. Silencing GPX1 in LSCs robustly triggers cell death and cell cycle arrest, thereby enhancing the radiosensitivity of LSCs. Specifically, GPX1 maintains the survival and proliferati

Ionizing radiation-induced testicular oxidative stress and apoptosis: the role of small GTPase RhoA.

PURPOSE: The effects of ionizing radiation on living organisms are mainly known as the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), apoptosis, and DNA damage. Small GTPases (RhoA, Rac1, Cdc42) are known to have roles in the regulation of oxidative stress and apoptosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of the RhoA molecule in testicular tissue damage due to oxidative stress and apoptosis induced by ionizing radiation. MATERIAL AND METHOD: In this study, testicular tissues and blood samples obtained from our previous study were examined. In that study, rats were exposed to ioni

Mesenchymal stem cell implantation mitigates ionizing radiation-induced vascular damage in the murine aorta.

For preparedness for some scenarios such as unintentional accidents or intentional malicious events, it is of critical importance to develop effective medical countermeasures against normal tissue injury from exposure to ionizing radiation. To this end, agents that are effective when administered after radiation exposure need to be developed. Considering that vascular injury is among the upstream events of radiation toxicity in various tissues, the present study was undertaken to investigate whether post-irradiation implantation of human mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) restore vascular i

Formation of Paraldehyde (C6H12O3) in Interstellar Analog Ices of Acetaldehyde Exposed to Ionizing Radiation.

Acetaldehyde (CH3CHO) plays a crucial role in the synthesis of prebiotic molecules such as amino acids, sugars, and sugar-related compounds, and in the progress of chain reaction polymerization in deep space. Here, we report the first formation of the cyclic acetaldehyde trimer - paraldehyde (C6H12O3) - in low-temperature interstellar analog ices exposed to energetic irradiation as proxies of galactic cosmic rays (GCRs). Utilizing vacuum ultraviolet photoionization reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometry and isotopic substitution experiments, paraldehyde was identified in the gas phase dur

Effect of Periodontal Instrumentation on Tooth Structure Exposure to Ionizing Radiation: In Vitro Study.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different scaling protocols on the morphology and roughness of the root dentin substrate exposure to ionizing radiation. One hundred and thirty extracted bovine incisors were randomly divided into two groups (n=65): non-irradiated (NIR) and irradiated (IR). Each group was initially subdivided into three subgroups according to the type of non-surgical periodontal protocol: NIT: no instrumentation; HS: hand scaling with 15 apical-coronal instrument movements; US: ultrasonic scaling with 15 apical-coronal cycles. Subsequently, all samples were subjected

Transcriptional pausing induced by ionizing radiation enables the acquisition of radioresistance in nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Lesions on the DNA template can impact transcription via distinct regulatory pathways. Ionizing radiation (IR) as the mainstay modality for many malignancies elicits most of the cytotoxicity by inducing a variety of DNA damages in the genome. How the IR treatment alters the transcription cycle and whether it contributes to the development of radioresistance remain poorly understood. Here, we report an increase in the paused RNA polymerase II (RNAPII), as indicated by the phosphorylation at serine 5 residue of its C-terminal domain, in recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patient samples af

Physiological Effects of Co-exposure to Ionizing Radiation and Noise within Occupational Exposure Limits.

Workers are frequently exposed to the occupational hazards of ionizing radiation and noise. Co-exposure to these hazards is not well understood in terms of their physiological effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the physiological effects of co-exposure to ionizing radiation and noise within the occupational limit. This study extracted the physical examination parameters of workers who met the screening criteria from the occupational health surveillance database. The workers were divided into three groups: the co-exposure (COE) group, the ionizing radiation exposure (ION) group, a
