BACKGROUND AND AIM: Appendectomy is associated with various diseases, but whether it increases the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC) remains uncertain. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis aimed at investigating the suggested correlation between appendectomy and CRC.
METHODS: Systematic retrieval was performed using the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane library, Web of Science, and ClinicalTrials.gov databases up to May 4, 2022, for studies reported the influence of appendectomy on CRC, colon cancer (CC) or rectal cancer (RC). Odd ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of CRC afte

BACKGROUND: One of the late complications associated with radiation therapy (RT) is a possible increased risk of second cancer. In this systematic review, we analysed the incidence of rectal cancer following primary pelvic cancer irradiation.
METHODS: A literature search was conducted using the PubMed and EMBASE libraries. Original articles that reported on secondary rectal cancer after previous RT for a primary pelvic cancer were included. Sensitivity analyses were performed by correcting for low number of events, high risk of bias, and outlying results.
RESULTS: A total of 5171 citations w

Transanal endoscopic microsurgery is part of the colorectal surgeons' armamentarium for over 2 decades. Since its first implementation for the resection of benign and T1 malignant lesions in the rectum several new indications were developed and it carries additional promise for further extension in upcoming years. Herein we review the technique, its current indications, novel implications, and future perspectives.

The posterior sagittal, transphincteric approach to treat different pelvic problems has been known since last century. Although some surgeons have embraced it and have enthusiastically advocated it s use, it has never become an overly popular technique. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of the approach, both from an historical perspective and from the authors experience. The international literature on the subject was reviewed since 1877 up to the present date. A retrospective evaluation of the authors experience was conducted, and the results reviewed.

We present the case of a 77-year-old woman who initially presented 13 years ago to a colorectal clinic with a change in bowel habit and bleeding per rectum over 7 months. These symptoms were attributed to a tubulovillous rectal adenoma which was excised transanally, but recurred five times in 12 years. The most recent endoscopy showed recurrence of the rectal adenoma and a new rectal diverticulum. Diverticula in the rectum are rare and only a few reports of this condition exist in the literature. Repeated surgical resections and endoscopic polypectomies may have caused a weakness in the rectal

A 60-year-old Japanese man was hospitalized because of urinary leakage from the anus on October 3, 1994. Retrograde urethrography detected a fistula between the bulbous urethra and the rectum. Urethrocystoscopy revealed a tumor on the urethrorectal fistula. Tumor biopsy showed a well differentiated adenocarcinoma. Cystourethrectomy with fistulectomy, and ileal conduit urinary diversion were performed. Pathological examination revealed primary adenocarcinoma in the fistula with invasion to the prostatic urethra and bladder wall. The patient showed no evidence of a recurrence as of August, 1996.

Posterior extrasphincteric rectotomy gives good access to the mid-rectum 8-15 cm from the anus. The method is suitable for the excision of villous and adenomatous tumours in this region as it permits radical extirpation and consequently little risk of recurrence. Its chief disadvantage is the risk of a fecal fistula. Among 10 operated patients a fistula was seen in 2; it healed spontaneously in the course of 4 weeks in one but did not heal in the other even after a sigmoidostomy. The latter patient has recurrence of the tumour and an insufficiently radical operation is presumably the reason wh

BACKGROUND: Obstructed defecation syndrome is a common multifactorial disease for which treatment is based primarily on clinic presentation for the lack of reliable instrumental and anatomopathological criteria.
OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to analyze the pathological findings of the resected rectal specimens after stapled transanal rectal resection in patients affected by outlet obstruction.
DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
SETTINGS: University hospital.
PATIENTS: Patients who underwent rectal resection for obstructed defecation syndrome due to internal rectal prolapse were included.

Ulcerative colitis (UC), which mainly consists of mucosal lesions, rarely form colovesical or rectovesical fistulas, although few cases of fistula formation associated with comorbidities have been reported. We report a case of UC-associated rectal cancer diagnosed following symptoms associated with rectovesical fistula. A 40-year-old man with a 31-year history of extensive UC presented with difficulty in defecation. Two years before the current presentation, he had experienced pneumaturia, and the examination then had revealed a rectal neoplastic lesion and rectovesical fistula; however, tissu

The ligaments of the rectum have been the subject of controversy for decades. Not only have their contents and components been a source of contention, but also the very existence of these ligaments has been called into question. This article explores the anatomical features of these ligaments with implications for surgical treatment of rectal prolapse, rectal cancer, and resection of the rectum and mesorectum. A theory about the evolution of the lateral rectal ligaments and the mesorectum in humans and higher mammals is also presented.
