Comparing homatropine and atropine in pediatric cycloplegic refractions.

PURPOSE: To compare cycloplegic efficacy of homatropine and atropine in pediatric refractions and derive a regression formula to calculate refraction findings for both agents. METHODS: Children between the ages of 4 to 10 years with refractive error underwent cycloplegic refraction with 2% homatropine and 1% atropine by retinoscopy and automated refraction. Refractive data were compared by the use of power vector analysis. Primary outcome measures were spherical equivalent (SE), astigmatic components of refractive error (J(0) and J(45)), overall blur strength of refractive error, and residual

Corneal Ectasia Induced by Prostaglandin Analogues.

Our purpose is to document the first case of unilateral mild corneal ectasia developed in an apparently nonpredisposed cornea after topical latanoprost treatment, and its regression after treatment withdrawal. We describe a 44-year-old man with visual impairment in his left eye (OS) and a past medical history of myopic refraction and ocular hypertension with latanoprost treatment, the rest of ocular examination was normal. A decrease in visual acuity was observed with a refractive change. Corneal tomography showed features of mild corneal ectasia in his OS. Topical prostaglandin analogue thera

Rare micropupil secondary to congenital cataract surgery favoring the development of the affected eye: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Congenital microcoria has been extensively reported and usually leads to visual dysfunction or blindness. However, micropupil development secondary to cataract surgery has never been reported. Here, we describe a rare case of micropupil development in infancy that occurred secondary to combined cataract extraction and intraocular lens implantation for treatment of congenital cataract. When the patient reached adulthood, the affected eye not only gained good vision but also showed better ocular development and refractive status than the fellow eye. CASE PRESENTATION: A 17-year-old

The influence of first near-spectacle reading correction on accommodation and its interaction with convergence.

PURPOSE: Accommodation and convergence can adapt to blur and disparity stimuli and to age-related changes in accommodative amplitude. Does this ability decline with age? The authors investigated short-term adaptation to first near-spectacle reading correction on the accommodative-stimulus response (ASR) function, accommodative amplitude (AA), AC/A, and CA/C ratios in a pre-presbyopic and an incipient presbyopic population and determined whether changes in these functions recovered after discontinuation of the use of near spectacles. METHODS: Thirty subjects with normal vision participated; th

Evaluation of a tele-refraction model to address the lack of human resources in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Uncorrected Refractive Errors (URE) constitute a significant public health concern in Kenya, where limited availability of qualified eye care professionals continues to impede equitable access to refractive services. This shortage is particularly acute in rural and underserved regions, resulting in significant unmet visual health needs. The implementation of telemedicine; specifically, a tele-refraction model utilizing low-cost, portable devices, has emerged as a viable and cost-effective approach to decentralize service delivery, enhance accessibility, and mitigate the burden of U

Standards for analyzing astigmatic outcomes: Part II: Recommended statistical methods.

Surgically induced astigmatism (SIA) is the astigmatic component of the surgically induced refractive change. Vector prediction error (PE) is the key expression for evaluating refractive surgery, defined as the vector difference between the postoperatively observed refractive astigmatism and the refractive astigmatism predicted from the preoperative measurements. Astigmatic analysis of the SIA and PE includes both univariate and bivariate analyses. The magnitude of the refractive astigmatism is a predictor of visual function and a valuable component of astigmatic reporting. For vector metrics

Improving population-level refractive error monitoring via mixture distributions.

INTRODUCTION: Sampling and describing the distribution of refractive error in populations is critical to understanding eye care needs, refractive differences between groups and factors affecting refractive development. We investigated the ability of mixture models to describe refractive error distributions. METHODS: We used key informants to identify raw refractive error datasets and a systematic search strategy to identify published binned datasets of community-representative refractive error. Mixture models combine various component distributions via weighting to describe an observed distri
