Bilateral Alterations in Isokinetic Strength and Knee Biomechanics During Side-Cutting 1 Year After Unilateral ACL Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR) are a population that has a higher risk for ACL injury compared with the general population. To reduce the reinjury rate and improve the rehabilitation outcome after ACLR, risk factors for ACL injury have to be addressed. PURPOSE: To compare the knee biomechanics during side-cutting and isokinetic strength of the thigh muscle of the reconstructed leg with those of the contralateral leg and healthy controls and investigate the knee movement asymmetries in individuals with ACLR. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laborat

Cortical Motor Planning and Biomechanical Stability During Unplanned Jump Landings in Men With Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction.

CONTEXT: Athletes with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR) exhibit increased cortical motor planning during simple sensorimotor tasks compared with healthy athletes serving as control groups. This may interfere with proper decision making during time-constrained movements, elevating the reinjury risk. OBJECTIVE: To compare cortical motor planning and biomechanical stability during jump landings between participants with ACLR and healthy individuals. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Laboratory. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: Ten men with ACLR (age = 28 ± 4 years,

Comparison of elbow valgus laxity and medial elbow stabilizer parameters during repetitive pitching between high school baseball players with and without a history of medial elbow injury.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent baseball players with a history of medial elbow injury are often reinjured during demanding practice sessions or games. The physical characteristics of baseball players with a history of medial elbow injury have been reported in several previous studies, but the nature of their medial elbow stabilizers is unknown. This study investigated the difference in characteristics of elbow valgus laxity and medial elbow stabilizer parameters between baseball players with and without a history of medial elbow injury, prior to and during repetitive pitching. METHODS: Sixteen high s

Incidence and Risk Factors of Subsequent Meniscal Surgery After Successful Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: A Retrospective Study With a Minimum 2-Year Follow-up.

BACKGROUND: One of the goals of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction is a meniscal protective effect on the knee. Despite the advancement of ACL reconstruction techniques, subsequent meniscal tears after ACL reconstruction remain a problem, and the risk factors for recurring lesions are still unclear. PURPOSE: To investigate the incidence of subsequent meniscal surgery after primary ACL reconstruction without revision ACL surgery and to determine the risk factors associated with this reoperation. STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4. METHODS: Overall, 518 patients who

Achilles Tendon Repairs in Adolescent and Young Adult Athletes <25 Years Old: A Retrospective Multicenter Case Series.

BACKGROUND: The outcomes of Achilles tendon tears have been minimally investigated in adolescents and young adults, with sparse literature-based evidence to guide management. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to describe the demographics, presentation, treatment, complications, and long-term functional follow-up including patient-reported outcomes (PROs), and return-to-sport (RTS) rates of adolescent and young adult athletes with Achilles tendon ruptures. It was hypothesized that despite high activity demands, perioperative complication rates would be low and RTS rates high.

Long-term Outcomes of Partial Proximal Hamstring Avulsion Repair: Mean 10-Year Follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Operative repair of partial proximal hamstring avulsions has been shown to improve pain and function at short- and midterm follow-up. Long-term outcomes have not yet been reported. Furthermore, it is unknown whether greater tendon involvement (ie, tendon number) in partial tears affects clinical outcomes. HYPOTHESIS: Hamstring function and patient satisfaction would remain stable over time at minimum 5-year and mean 10-year follow-up, with no differences in outcomes when comparing isolated and combined tendon involvement. STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4. METHODS:

Sex differences in the physiological response to acute anterior cruciate ligament overuse.

Young female athletes are at least two times more likely to suffer a non-contact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury than males, and one and a half times more likely to have a recurrent injury. Primary factors contributing to this disparity are less stiff and weaker ACLs, and greater knee laxity than males. Also, some evidence suggests females may exhibit a muted response to repetitive, high-intensity activity compared to males. Here, we test the hypothesis that female ACLs would accumulate more extracellular matrix (ECM) damage and show a delayed reparative response compared to males unde

Predictors of Graft Failure in Young Active Patients Undergoing Hamstring Autograft Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction With or Without a Lateral Extra-articular Tenodesis: The Stability Experience.

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR) has higher failure rates in young active patients returning to sports as compared with older, less active individuals. Augmentation of ACLR with an anterolateral procedure has been shown to reduce failure rates; however, indications for this procedure have yet to be clearly defined. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to identify predictors of ACL graft failure in high-risk patients and determine key indications for when hamstring ACLR should be augmented by a lateral extra-articular tenodesis (LET). Posterior Tibial Slope Characteristics and Their Relationships With Thigh Muscle Morphology, Activation Patterns, and Dynamic Knee Valgus in Male and Female Soccer Players Before and After Fatigue: A Descriptive Laboratory Study.

BACKGROUND: Soccer players are at high risk of anterior cruciate ligament injury as well as reinjury, with higher rates in women and in the supporting leg, and fatigue impairs the neuromuscular control of the knee joint. However, little is known about the bony anatomy of the knee joint and its relationship with neuromuscular measures related to knee stabilization, and studies investigating anatomic and biomechanical measures simultaneously are widely lacking. PURPOSE: To investigate (1) whether posterior tibial slope (PTS) characteristics and thigh muscle morphology differ between sexes; (2)

Biceps Femoris Compensates for Semitendinosus After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction With a Hamstring Autograft: A Muscle Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study in Male Soccer Players.

BACKGROUND: Rates of reinjury, return to play (RTP) at the preinjury level, and hamstring strain injuries in male soccer players after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) remain unsatisfactory, due to multifactorial causes. Recent insights on intramuscular hamstring coordination revealed the semitendinosus (ST) to be of crucial importance for hamstring functioning, especially during heavy eccentric hamstring loading. Scientific evidence on the consequences of ST tendon harvest for ACLR is scarce and inconsistent. This study intended to investigate the repercussions of ST harvest f

Effects of the Jump Step Kids Program on Functional Movement and Self-Report Outcomes in Children Aged 7 to 12 Years With Chronic Ankle Instability: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Chronic ankle instability (CAI) is a common musculoskeletal problem in children, characterized by mechanical instability, perceived instability, and recurrent sprains. Inadequate rehabilitation can cause symptoms to persist, increase the risk of reinjury, and negatively affect long-term quality of life. Research on the rehabilitation of children with CAI concerning ankle stability, running speed, and agility has been limited. Therefore, the Jump Step Kids (JSKs) program was developed as a rhythmic, multidirectional jumping program to improve functional movement and agility in child
