Decentering as a potential common mechanism across two therapies for generalized anxiety disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine decentering as a potential mechanism of action across 2 treatments for generalized anxiety disorder: an acceptance-based behavioral therapy (ABBT) and applied relaxation (AR). METHOD: Sixty-four individuals who completed at least half of the 16 total sessions of either ABBT or AR (65.6% female; 79.7% identified as White; average age = 34.41 years) completed measures of decentering (Experiences Questionnaire) and of symptoms of anxiety (Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-Stress subscale) at 5 time points over the course of therapy, and a measure

Anxiety disorders in pregnancy.

There is now growing realization that many women suffer from new onset or worsening of anxiety disorders during pregnancy. Studies of anxiety symptoms in pregnancy show that a significant portion of women are affected. Anxiety symptoms in pregnancy have been associated with adverse fetal and infant outcomes. Furthermore, having an anxiety disorder during pregnancy is one of the strongest risk factors for postnatal depression. Although the literature on treating anxiety disorders in pregnancy per se is sparse, response to standard treatment is good. The risk of teratogenicity with pharmacothera

A critical view of the yawn-sigh as a voice therapy technique.

The purpose of this study was to take a critical look at a voice therapy technique known as the yawn-sigh. The voiced sigh as an approach in voice therapy has had increased use in recent years, particularly with problems of vocal hyperfunction. In this study, the physiology of the yawn-sigh was studied with video nasoendoscopy in eight normal subjects; their taped voices were also studied acoustically for possible fundamental frequency and format changes in producing selected vowels under normal and sigh conditions. Although each subject was given a model by the examiner of a yawn-sigh, one of

Relaxation training for essential hypertension at the worksite: I. The untreated mild hypertensive.

This industry-based randomized study compared the effects of behavioral treatment (BT) and blood pressure monitoring (BPM) on blood pressure (BP) change in 158 unmedicated persons with mild hypertension (diastolic blood pressure 90 to 104 mm Hg). Participants recruited by a three-stage screening were randomly assigned to BT or BPM groups and stratified by entry diastolic blood pressure (DBP), age, and sex. BT participants received relaxation training, with or without the addition of biofeedback, cognitive restructuring, and health behavior change components. During the study, all participants

Prolonged-Release Oxycodone/Naloxone Improves Anal Sphincter Relaxation Compared to Oxycodone Plus Macrogol 3350.

BACKGROUND: Opioid analgesics inhibit anal sphincter function and contribute to opioid-induced bowel dysfunction (OIBD). However, it is unknown whether the inhibition can be reduced by opioid antagonism with prolonged-release (PR) naloxone and how this compares to laxative treatment. AIMS: To compare the effects of combined PR oxycodone/naloxone or PR oxycodone plus macrogol 3350 on anal sphincter function and gastrointestinal symptoms. METHODS: A randomized, double-blind, crossover trial was conducted in 20 healthy men. Participants were treated for 5 days with combined PR oxycodone/naloxon

The Effects of Worry and Relaxation on Flexibility During Cognitive Restructuring.

Worry is associated with inflexibility in cognitive, emotional, and physiological functioning. In addition, worry's negative valence and abstract level of construal are rigid characteristics that contribute to its nonadaptive consequences. Relaxation and cognitive therapy aim to increase flexibility in chronic worriers, and may have greater efficacy when administered in combination. We examined the extent to which relaxation enhances and/or worry inhibits cognitive flexibility during a cognitive restructuring exercise in which participants generated alternative predictions for their worries. Increased cavernosal relaxation by Phoneutria nigriventer toxin, PnTx2-6, via activation at NO/cGMP signaling.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) mechanisms in diabetic patients are multifactorial and often lead to resistance to current therapy. Animal toxins have been used as pharmacological tools to study penile erection. Human accidents involving the venom of Phoneutria nigriventer spider are characterized by priapism. We hypothesize that PnTx2-6 potentiates cavernosal relaxation in diabetic mice by increasing cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). This effect is neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) dependent. Cavernosal strips were contracted with phenylephrine (10(-5) M) and relaxed by electrical field st

The usefulness of breathing and relaxation techniques influencing the autonomic nervous system state in psychiatry. A subjective review of contemporary research. Part 2 - Western tradition.

The authors present a subjective review of recent research on the use of selected techniques influencing the state of the autonomic nervous system, based on the Western tradition, i.e. autogenic training by Johannes Heinrich Schultz and progressive muscle relaxation by Edmund Jacobson. The basic assumptions of both methods are discussed, taking into account the modifications that have occurred since their creation, pointing to their consequences and the necessity of taking them into account in research. The importance of including as accurate descriptions of the used interventions as possible

[Comparative study of the psychophysiologic relaxation effects of an optic-acoustic mind machine with relaxation music].

The present study was designed to test the effectiveness of an optical-acoustic mind machine (brain machine) in inducing relaxation. The mind machine used in this study stimulates the user with flickers of light and pulsating sounds. During the treatment the stimulation decreases from 10 to 2 hertz and increases again at half time. No other relaxation inducing effects were used. Sixteen subjects received two or three sessions of instruction with the mind machine. Afterwards the parameters listed below were continuously recorded during one session with the mind machine and one session with the

The effects of relaxation/imagery training on recurrent aphthous stomatitis: a preliminary study.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is one of the most common diseases of the oral mucosa. Although etiology remains unknown, immunological and emotional disturbances have been implicated in the pathogenesis of RAS. No consistently effective therapeutic regimen has been found. The present study investigates the voluntary modulation of RAS employing hypnosis-like relaxation/imagery training procedures. A multiple baseline design was used to evaluate change in frequency of ulcer recurrence. The role of psychological distress, ratings of perceived pain, and hypnotizability in the treatment of RAS

A comparison of anxiety treatments with adults who have moderate and severe mental retardation.

Several authors have suggested that Abbreviated Progressive Relaxation may not be effective with clients who have moderate and severe mental retardation. Because of this the authors were interested in the development of behavioural relaxation which is a more simple technique and does not require a conceptual awareness of internal states of tension. These two treatments were compared in group and individual forms with four groups of subjects. Subjects were assessed using measures of rated anxiety and pulse rate before, during, and after treatment. The rated anxiety measures suggest Behavioural

A comparison between the effects of Kegel's exercises and a combination of sexual awareness relaxation and breathing on situational orgasmic dysfunction in women.

Several authors suggest that women should use pubococcygeal muscle exercises to increase their probability of experiencing orgasm during sexual activities. However, few experimental studies support the efficacy of these exercises. In the present study a comparison was made between the effects of pubococcygeal exercises (PC group) and a combination of sexual awareness, relaxation and breathing (SARB group) on situational orgasmic dysfunction in women. No significant changes occur in orgasmic responsivity in these two groups. Significant differences were obtained in questionnaires and these diff

Was I hypnotized?: a social psychological analysis of hypnotic depth reports.

We will here review experimental work on subjects' reports of being hypnotized, using an attribution theory framework. Subjective experiences accompanying a hypnotic induction procedure and test suggestions are ambiguous, and, therefore, subjects rely on contextual information in order to label these experiences. Thus, subjects are most likely to define themselves as hypnotized when the situation is convincingly defined as hypnosis and when they observe that their responses are consistent with their conception of hypnosis. Other variables which influence subjects' reports include expert opinio
