Observers viewed M- or L-cone-isolating stimuli and compared slowly-on and slowly-off sawtooth waveforms of the same mean chromaticity and luminance. Between 6 and 13 Hz, the mean hue of slowly-on L-cone and slowly-off M-cone sawtooth flicker appeared redder, and the mean hue of slowly-off L-cone and slowly-on M-cone sawtooth stimuli appeared greener-despite all the waveforms' having the same mean, near-yellow-appearing chromaticity. We measured the effect of the modulation depth and the slope of the sawtooth on the mean hue shifts as a function of temporal frequency. The results are complex b

In this paper, we review the path taken by signals originating from the short wavelength sensitive cones (S-cones) in Old World and New World primates. Two types of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) carrying S-cone signals (blue-On and blue-Off cells) project to the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN) in the thalamus. In all primates, these S-cone signals are relayed through the 'dust-like' (konis in classical Greek) dLGN cells. In New World primates such as common marmoset, these very small cells are known to form distinct and spatially extensive, koniocellular layers. Although in Old World

The circadian rhythms originate within the organism and synchronize with cyclic fluctuations in the external environment. It has been demonstrated that part of the human genome is under control of the circadian clock and that a synchronizer that helps to maintain daily rhythms is Melatonin, a neuro-hormone primarily synthesized by the pineal gland during the night. The chronic disruption of circadian rhythm has been linked to many conditions such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases. Studies in the mice showed that the disruption of the retina

The relationship between ocular haemodynamics and retinitis pigmentosa (RP) has not been fully understood. Reductions in blood flow have been established in RP patients by a variety of studies; however, questions have yet to be answered regarding the role of vascular dysfunction in photoreceptors (PR) degeneration, the causes of vascular dysfunction in RP, as well as the diagnostic, prognostic and perhaps therapeutic potential of measuring ocular haemodynamics in RP patients. While significant evidence supports the theory that vascular dysfunction is associated with but not the cause of PR dea

BACKGROUND: Different ocular alterations have been described in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Our aim was to determine whether COVID-19 affected retinal cells and establish correlations with clinical parameters.
METHODS: Retinal sections and flat-mount retinas from human donors with COVID-19 (n = 16) and controls (n = 15) were immunostained. The location of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) and the morphology of microglial cells, Müller cells, astrocytes, and photoreceptors were analyzed by confocal microscopy. Microglial quantification and the area occupied by them

Understanding neural mechanisms of opponency is the next frontier of comparative color vision research. Opponent cell properties can be investigated from different perspectives: the type of cone inputs to a cell (cone opponency), and the wavelengths of light to which the cell responds (spectral opponency). Based on a recent database (DOI 10.1016/j.dib.2024.111166) on cone and spectral opponency across non-primate vertebrates, we identified major taxonomic trends in the distribution of opponent cells through image-forming brain regions, analyzed sampling metrics and experimental variables influ

Electroretinography (ERG) is pivotal in elucidating retinal function, yet investigations into the temporal dynamics of ERG signals in New Zealand White (NZW) and Dutch-belted (DB) rabbits remain scarce. This study presents a longitudinal assessment of retinal function in both NZW and DB strains. ERG recordings were conducted on four NZW and four DB rabbits at 2, 7, 15, and 24 months of age, encompassing both dark-adapted and light-adapted protocols at each time point. Quantitative analyses included assessment of a- and b-wave amplitudes, implicit times, and photopic flicker responses. Results

Vision is one of our dominant senses and its loss has a profound impact on the life quality of affected individuals. Highly specialized neurons in the retina called photoreceptors convert photons into neuronal responses. This conversion of photons is mediated by light sensitive opsin proteins, which are found in the outer segments of the photoreceptors. These outer segments are highly specialized primary cilia, explaining why retinal dystrophy is a key feature of ciliopathies, a group of diseases resulting from abnormal and dysfunctional cilia. Therefore, research on ciliopathies often include

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Investigations of morphological changes in photoreceptors in Behçet's disease (BD) using adaptive optics scanning light ophthalmoscope (AOSLO) are lacking. The authors aimed to evaluate macular cone density and regularity in BD patients with or without a history of uveitis with good visual acuity (VA).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The authors included 16 patients (29 eyes) with BD and 12 healthy volunteers (12 eyes) as controls. All subjects had VA of 20/20 or higher. Subjects underwent AOSLO to evaluate the photoreceptor status including cone density (numbers/mm2) and prop

When M- or L-cone-isolating sawtooth waveforms flicker at frequencies between 4 and 13.3 Hz, there is a mean hue shift in the direction of the shallower sawtooth slope. Here, we investigate how this shift depends on the alignment of the first and second harmonics of sawtooth-like waveforms. Below 4 Hz, observers can follow hue variations caused by both harmonics, and reliably match reddish and greenish excursions. At higher frequencies, however, the hue variations appear as chromatic flicker superimposed on a steady light, the mean hue of which varies with second-harmonic alignment. Observers

AIMS: The short wavelength sensitive (S) cone electroretinograms (ERGs) were examined in two patients with the complete type of congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB).
METHODS: Ganzfeld spectral flashes in the presence of strong white adapting fields were used to elicit the S cone ERGs.
RESULTS: The S cone ERG b-wave was not detectable to short wavelength stimuli, while the mixed long (L) and middle (M) wavelength sensitive cone responses appeared normal in waveforms with normal amplitude in both patients. Both patients had normal colour vision on the Farnsworth Panel D-15.

The canine species has dichromatic color vision comprising short-wavelength (S-) and long/medium (L/M-) wavelength-sensitive cones with peak spectral sensitivity of 429-435 nm and 555 nm respectively. Although differentiation of rod- and cone-mediated responses by electroretinogram (ERG) in dogs is commonly performed, and standards have been developed based on standards for human observers, methods to differentiate S- and L/M-cone responses in dogs have not been described. We developed flicker protocols derived from previously published rod and cone spectral sensitivities. We used a double sil

The novel rhomboid-like protein RHBDD2 is distantly related to rhomboid proteins, a group of highly specialized membrane-bound proteases that catalyze regulated intramembrane proteolysis. In retina, RHBDD2 is expressed from embryonic stages to adulthood, and its levels show age-dependent changes. RHBDD2 is distinctly abundant in the perinuclear region of cells, and it localizes to their Golgi. A glycine zipper motif present in one of the transmembrane domains of RHBDD2 is important for its packing into the Golgi membranes. Its deletion causes dislodgment of RHBDD2 from the Golgi. A specific an

There are many ganglion cell types and subtypes in our retina that carry color information. These have appeared at different times over the history of the evolution of the vertebrate visual system. They project to several different places in the brain and serve a variety of purposes allowing wavelength information to contribute to diverse visual functions. These include circadian photoentrainment, regulation of sleep and mood, guidance of orienting movements, detection and segmentation of objects. Predecessors to some of the circuits serving these purposes presumably arose before mammals evolv

There is an emblematic clinical and genetic heterogeneity associated with inherited retinal diseases (IRDs). The most common form is retinitis pigmentosa (RP), a rod-cone dystrophy caused by pathogenic variants in over 80 different genes. Further complexifying diagnosis, different variants in individual RP genes can also alter the clinical phenotype. USH2A is the most prevalent gene for autosomal-recessive RP and one of the most challenging because of its large size and, hence, large number of variants. Moreover, USH2A variants give rise to non-syndromic and syndromic RP, known as Usher syndro

Pineal evolution is envisaged as a gradual transformation of pinealocytes (a gradual regression of pinealocyte sensory capacity within a particular cell line), the so-called sensory cell line of the pineal organ. In most non-mammals the pineal organ is a directly photosensory organ, while the pineal organ of mammals (epiphysis cerebri) is a non-sensory neuroendocrine organ under photoperiod control. The phylogenetic transformation of the pineal organ is reflected in the morphology and physiology of the main parenchymal cell type, the pinealocyte. In anamniotes, pinealocytes with retinal cone p

Myopia is a refractive disorder arising from a mismatch between refractive power and relatively long axial length of the eye. With its dramatically increasing prevalence, myopia has become a pervasive social problem. It is commonly accepted that abnormal visual input acts as an initiating factor of myopia. As the first station to perceive visual signals, the retina plays an important role in myopia etiology. The retina is a fine-layered structure with multitudinous cells, processing intricate visual signals via numerous molecular pathways. Accordingly, dopaminergic mechanisms, contributions of

Prior research has demonstrated the therapeutic potential of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα) agonist fenofibrate on diabetic retinopathy. In the present study, a novel non-fibrate PPARα agonist, A190, was designed with higher potency and selectivity than fenofibrate in PPARα agonism. A190 was encapsulated in biodegradable microparticles (A190-MP) to ensure sustained drug release, with detection in the retina up to 6 months following a single intravitreal injection. A190-MP alleviated retinal dysfunction as shown by electroretinography in Vldlr-/- (wet-AMD model) and Abca4-

Yes-associated protein (YAP) is a major component of the Hippo pathway involved in development, growth, repair and homeostasis. Nonsense YAP1 mutations in humans result in autosomal dominant coloboma. Here, we generated a conditional knockout mouse model in which Yap1 was specifically deleted in embryonic retinal progenitor cells (RPCs) and in mature Müller cells using a Chx10-Cre driver. Our data demonstrated that the conditional ablation of Yap1 in embryonic RPCs does not prevent normal retinal development and caused no gross changes in retinal structure during embryonic and early postnatal
