Natural course of experimental retinal vein occlusion in rabbit; arterial occlusion following venous photothrombosis.

BACKGROUND: Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is the second leading cause of vascular eye disease. Currently there is no definite treatment for this condition. Animal models could be potentially helpful in developing new treatments; however, it is essential to understand the differences these models may have with human RVO. The aim of our study was to examine the course of experimentally created retinal vein occlusion (RVO) in rabbits. METHODS: Twenty-nine pigmented rabbits were included in the study. RVO was created in all using an argon green laser following intravenous injection of Rose Bengal.…

Central retinal vein occlusion secondary to varicella zoster retinal vasculitis in an immunocompetent individual during the COVID-19 pandemic - A case report.

We report the occurrence of unilateral central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) in a young yoga enthusiast who presented amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Subtle signs of uveitis when systemically investigated revealed a multitude of causes, but ocular fluid polymerase chain reaction was positive for varicella zoster virus (VZV). The prompt initiation of antivirals resulted in a good visual outcome. Our case describes the rare presentation of VZV retinal vasculitis as CRVO in a young healthy individual and highlights the importance of early antiviral therapy for favorable outcomes.

Treatment effects prediction and clinical decision-making system for retinal vein occlusion by artificial intelligence.

Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is a chronic retinal vascular disease that often requires repeated anti-VEGF injections and long-term follow-up. However, predicting treatment responses across different follow-up timepoints remains clinically challenging. To address this issue, we developed an AI system integrating generative adversarial networks (GANs), UNet + +, and ResNet-101 to generate post-treatment OCT and fundus images and support clinical decision-making. A total of 2304 OCT and 576 fundus images from 576 RVO patients were collected at baseline and at weeks 4, 12, and 24 after treatment. …

Calculation of vessel pulse wave velocities in retinal vein segments within the optic disc centre.

The carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV) method is used clinically to determine degrees of stiffness and other indices of disease. It is believed PWV measurement in retinal vessels may allow early detection of diseases. In this paper we present a new non-invasive method for estimating PWVs in retinal vein segments close to the optic disc centre, based on the measurement of blood column pulsation in retinal veins (reflective of vessel wall pulsation), using modified photoplethysmography (PPG). An optic disc (OD) PPG video is acquired spanning three cardiac cycles for a fixed ophthalmodynam…
