AIMS: Evaluation of the retinal microcirculation is key to understanding retinal vasculopathies, such as diabetic retinopathy. Laser speckle flowgraphy (LSFG) has recently enabled us to directly evaluate the vascular resistance in both retinal vessels and capillaries, non-invasively. PURPOSE/METHODS: In a patient with a coloboma of the optic nerve, inferior retina and choroid, and deep portions of the sclera, a retrobulbar vessel moved irregularly relative to the retinal vessels, which moved contiguously with the posterior globe.
RESULTS/CONCLUSION: Fluorescein angiography showed the retrobulbar vessel filling slightly later than overlying retinal vessels. We conclude that the retrobulbar vessel was a vein situated inferiorly to the optic nerve.

Several cases of ischemic damage to the retina associated with acute pancreatitis have been reported since 1975. The retinal disease is said to be caused by fat embolism of retinal vessels. However, since occlusions of blood vessels do not adequately explain the severe morphological changes and malfunctions of the retina, other etiological influences or a combination of them must be considered for this ophthalmological complication.
