Telomere length and prevalent chronic lung disease in middle-aged and older adults: socioeconomic heterogeneity and early-life tobacco exposure in the health and retirement study.

INTRODUCTION: Telomere shortening is a hallmark of aging and age-related diseases, yet evidence linking it to pulmonary diseases remains limited. METHODS: We included 4,994 participants aged ≥50 years from the 2008 HRS wave with available telomere measurement data. Pulmonary disease status was defined using the 2008 HRS self-reported physician-diagnosed chronic lung disease item, which includes conditions such as chronic bronchitis or emphysema and excludes asthma. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to examine the association between telomere length and the odds of prevalent c

Examining the association between neck pain and depressive symptoms in middle-aged and older Chinese adults: findings from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS).

BACKGROUND: Neck pain is a prevalent musculoskeletal condition among middle-aged and older adults and may contribute to the development of depressive symptoms. However, evidence on the longitudinal relationship between neck pain and depression remains limited in large population-based cohorts. METHODS: Data were obtained from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), including adults aged ≥ 45 years who participated in the 2011 baseline survey. Cross-sectional associations between neck pain and depressive symptoms were evaluated using multivariable logistic regression, while…

Evaluating the predictive utility of European-based and transethnic polygenic risk scores for kidney function in older Black adults: insights from the Health and Retirement Study.

BACKGROUND: Black populations in the U.S. experience a disproportionately faster progression of chronic kidney disease than the general population. Polygenic risk scores (PRS) are a promising tool for risk stratification, yet their utility in predicting kidney function across populations remains uncertain. METHODS: This study evaluates the effectiveness of European and trans-ethnic PRS in predicting kidney function among older Black adults from the 2010-2012 Health and Retirement Study (HRS) (N = 2080), a nationally representative sample of adults aged ≥50 years in the U.S. We assessed kidney…

Machine learning-based prediction model for fall risk among individuals with arthritis in China: an analysis using the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) database.

BACKGROUND: Falling has become a global public health problem. Individuals with arthritis have a higher risk of falling because of joint pain, poor muscle strength, and decreased proprioception; however, there is no all-inclusive risk assessment model for fall risks in the Chinese population based on multi-health data. METHODS: This study utilized data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) to develop a machine learning (ML)-based predictive model for fall risk among adults with arthritis. Multidimensional health data were integrated to identify key risk factors. Nin…

Age-friendly community environments and depressive symptom trajectories among middle-aged and older adults in China: Evidence from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS).

How age-friendly community environments contribute to reducing the risk of developing adverse depressive trajectories remains an important area for scholarly inquiry. Using the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) data from 2011 to 2020, this study employed Group-based trajectory modeling (GBTM) to identify depressive symptom trajectories, and multinomial logistic regression to examine associations between baseline age-friendly community environments and those trajectories among middle-aged and older adults, considering health heterogeneity and urban-rural differences. Three…

An instrumental variables approach to post-acute care nursing home quality: is there a dime's worth of evidence that continuing care retirement communities provide higher quality?

For the affluent elderly, continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs) have become a popular option for long term care and other health care needs related to aging. While CCRCs have experienced significant growth over the last few decades, very little is known about the quality of care CCRCs provide. This paper is the first to rigorously study CCRCs on a national scale and the only study that focuses on nursing home quality. Using a national sample from 2005, we determine if the quality of post-acute care provided by CCRC nursing homes is superior to traditional nursing homes. To mimic rando…
