PURPOSE: To determine feasibility and safety of laparoscopic appendectomy (LA).
PATIENTS: From January 1991 to June 2006, 2209 consecutive patients underwent appendectomy; for 2074 patients, appendectomy was performed laparoscopically. One thousand and fifty (53%) were women; mean age was 30.8 (11 to 96) years. Mean body mass index was 23.6 (18 to 58 kg/m2). Mean American Society of Anesthesiology score was 1.3 (I to III).

Infantile acne is a rare and poorly understood disorder. The objective of this study was to improve our knowledge about the epidemiology and clinical course of infantile acne, and evaluate approaches to treatment. This two-center retrospective study covered the period between 1985 and 2007. Over a 16-year period, 190 tumors and tumorlike lesions from 179 pet rabbits were submitted for histopathologic examination. A total of 23 different tumor types and 1 tumorlike lesion were diagnosed. An increasing death rate as a result of violence constitutes a large group in medicolegal autopsies. Specially, deaths due to asphyxia are one of the most important causes in violence deaths. During the 21-year period from January 1984 to October 2004, there were 134 asphyxial deaths autopsied by the Department of Forensic Medicine, Trakya University, Edirne, Turkey. Cases of onychomycosis diagnosed by mycological examination in three mycology units (Florence, Siena and Milan) of central and northern Italy over the 15-year period, 1985-2000, were studied retrospectively. The number of cases was 4046 (1952 women, 2094 men). Dermatophytes were isolated in 2859, yeasts in 655 and moulds in 532 cases. The most frequent dermatophyte was Trichophyton rubrum (87%), followed by T. mentagrophytes var. interdigitale (10%). Candida albicans (93.2%) was the prevalent yeast. Calcinosis circumscripta is an uncommon syndrome of ectopic idiopathic, dystrophic, metastatic or iatrogenic mineralization characterized by deposition of calcium salts in soft tissues. This paper is a retrospective study of 77 canine cases. The age of dogs in the study varied from 4 months to 15 years and 55% were <1 year old, 74% <2 years old and 88% <4 years old. A retrospective study was performed in 100 dogs with 121 mandibular and 21 maxillary fractures. Dog fight (43.0%) and automobile (12.0%) trauma were the most common etiologies for fracture. The cause of fracture was unknown in 23.0% of the cases, while pathologic fractures occurred in 13.0% of cases. Young dogs (< 1-year-old) and dogs > 8-years of age were most affected. Mandibular fractures occurred in 90 dogs (90.0%), with two dogs (2.2%) having concurrent maxillary fractures. Maxillary fractures only were diagnosed in 10 dogs (10.0%). Mycetomas are inflammatory pseudotumors of chronic and progressive evolution, of fungal (Eumycetoma), or bacterial (Actinomycetoma) origin. We conducted a retrospective study of patients who have been consulted for mycetoma over a period of 28 years. Thirteen cases of mycetomas were collected during the 28-year period, 10 patients were of rural origin. The lesions were localized on the foot in all instances. There was no male predominance. Here we report the results of a retrospective study on the epidemiological characteristics and genetic relationships of the virus isolates responsible for the last poliomyelitis cases in Greece. The last wild poliomyelitis case in Greece was detected in 1996, and the last vaccine-related strain was isolated in 1998. The whole of Europe, including Greece, is now considered to be polio-free.
