Hydatid disease of the ribs: a diagnostic challenge with an endless differential diagnosis - a case report.

Hydatid disease is a parasitic infection in humans caused by Echinococcusgranulosus and can lead to tissue cyst formation anywhere in the body. The most common sites for the development of parasitic cysts are the liver (75%) and lungs (15%). Skeletal involvement in echinococcal infection is relatively rare, occurring in only 1%-4% of cases. Few reports in the available medical literature describe rib hydatidosis, which clinically mimics benign or malignant cystic tumors.

A case study of inhale and exhale split-course VMAT treatment to minimize dose to ribs.

Treating at breath-hold has been used to mitigate dose to the organs at risk while maintaining target stability and dose coverage. The breath-hold technique has been used in conjunction with stereotactic body irradiation for the treatment of lung lesions. However, utilizing a breath-hold technique does not help to decrease dose to the ribs when the target is in proximity to the chest wall. The researchers in this case study aimed to demonstrate an alternative route to reduce dose to the chest wall via a novel method of splitting the course of treatment between the inhalation breath-hold and ex…

Ultrasound of pneumothorax in neonates: Diagnostic value of the anterior transverse plane and of mirrored ribs.

INTRODUCTION: Point-of-care lung ultrasound is increasingly used to diagnose pneumothorax efficiently and safely in neonates. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of the central and anterior transverse thoracic plane in the ultrasound diagnosis of pneumothorax, analyze the diagnostic value of the "mirrored ribs" sign, and evaluate the predictive value of the lung point location for the need of pleural drainage. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of all newborns admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit of the Basurto University Hospital (Bilbao, Spain) due to respirato…

Prevalence of cervical ribs and elongated transverse processes in Omani population: a computed tomography-based study.

INTRODUCTION: Cervical ribs are the supernumerary ribs that usually arise from the seventh cervical vertebra. Ethnic and geographical variations in cervical ribs and elongated transverse processes have been reported. Therefore, we aimed to study the prevalence of cervical ribs and elongated transverse processes and morphometry of cervical ribs in Omani subjects using computed tomography (CT). METHODS: A total of 1165 consecutive patients' CT scans of the cervical spine who had visited the tertiary care hospital from January 2016 to December 2020 were included in the study. The CT scans were s…

Unilateral thoracic outlet syndrome in a case with bilateral cervical ribs, does it always produce compression?

BACKGROUND: The cervical rib can be a rare finding in asymptomatic subjects. When it produces compression, it affects variably the vasculo-nervous structures of the brachial plexus; the clinical history is progressive. The imaging studies indicate the site of osteo-neuro-vascular conflict and electrophysiological studies indicate the degree of neural involvement. CASE REPORT: We present a patient with an eight-month history of paresis and right dysesthesias, with an image of bilateral cervical ribs with different anatomical characteristics. This case discusses how a variant of the anatomy pro…

Outcomes in patients with fractured ribs: middle aged at same risk of complications as the elderly.

AIMS: Rib fractures occur in up to 10% of hospitalised trauma patients and are the most common type of clinically significant blunt injury to the thorax. There is strong evidence that elderly patients have worse outcomes compared with younger patients. Evolving evidence suggests adverse outcomes start at a younger age. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of age on outcomes in patients with rib fractures in Northland, New Zealand. METHOD: A two-year retrospective study of patients admitted to any Northland District Health Board hospital with one or more radiologically proven rib fr

A novel technique for transaxillary resection of fully formed cervical ribs with long-term clinical outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Although the supraclavicular approach has been widely adopted for cervical rib resection, a transaxillary approach has been favored by many. We have reviewed more than two decades of experience with decompression of the thoracic outlet to treat thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) in patients with complete cervical ribs using a novel transaxillary approach. METHODS: A prospectively maintained database of patients undergoing surgery for TOS was searched for patients with complete (class 3 and 4) cervical ribs from 1997 to 2019. All these patients had undergone transaxillary resection usin…

Giant Cell Tumor of the Ribs and Aneurysmal Bone Cyst Presenting With Hemothorax in a Child.

Giant cell tumor (GCT) is one of the most common tumors of bone and is the most common precursor of aneurysmal bone cysts (ABC). The clinical behavior of concurrent GCT and ABC can be very aggressive in children. GCT of the ribs, with or without ABC, is rarely seen in children. We report a case of an 8-year-old girl with GCT and associated ABC of the ribs who presented with sudden onset of chest pain and breathlessness due to a hemothorax. The patient was successfully treated by surgical resections and arterial embolization. She has remained well for 4 years after the initial surgery.

Abnormal number of fetal ribs on 3-dimensional ultrasonography: associated anomalies and outcomes in 75 fetuses.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to describe the clinical importance of an abnormal number of fetal ribs. METHODS: A retrospective study of all fetuses that were found to have an abnormal number of ribs during routine ultrasonographic examinations was performed. Volume data sets of the fetal ribs were acquired by either static 3- or 4-dimensional volume contrast imaging in plane C. In all cases, a meticulous survey of the fetal anatomy was performed, and prenatal and postnatal records were reviewed. RESULTS: Seventy-five fetuses were found retrospectively to have an abnormal number o…

Sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis: painful swelling of the sternum, clavicles, and upper ribs. Report of two new cases.

Five patients had persistent, pulling pain in the sternum, clavicles, and upper ribs that was exacerbated by cold and dampness. Clublike, symmetrical enlargement of the clavicles was seen and, in two patients, venous congestion of the upper half of the body. All patients had a constantly elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Radiologically there was symmetrical hyperostosis of the sternal and middle portions of the clavicles, synostosis of the sternoclavicular joints, a widened and thickened sternum, and varying degrees of involvement of the upper ribs. X-ray findings did not change over se…

Ewing sarcoma of the rib with a rare PTEN mutation.

BACKGROUND: Rib involvement in Ewing sarcoma (ES) is very rare (3-5 %) and may often lead to unique presentations due to mass effect within the thorax. Molecular studies may sometimes offer insights into disease prognosis and possible targeted treatment approaches. CASE PRESENTATION: Here we present the case of a 39-year-old female who presented with shortness of breath from a massive primary tumor in the right rib and lung. She was diagnosed with ES, which was confirmed by the presence of EWSR1/FLI-1 rearrangement and received multimodal therapy with neoadjuvant VDC-IE (vincristine-doxorubic

The Challenges and Considerations with Autologous Rib Microtia Reconstruction.

Microtia encompasses a spectrum of congenital pinna malformation. Autologous rib reconstruction is a widely utilized surgical reconstruction technique for microtia. The surgery presents various challenges that can impact surgical outcomes and patient satisfaction. Sculpting and shaping the cartilage into a detailed auricular framework poses is a technically difficult surgery due to the complexity of the ear's anatomy. Postoperative complications such as scar formation, infection, and framework resorption may lead to poor aesthetic outcomes like asymmetry of the reconstructed ear and inadequate

Rib Fractures and Frailty in Geriatric Trauma Patients.

As rib fractures are a common injury in the geriatric trauma population and can result in increased morbidity and mortality, we sought to understand predicting outcomes in this population. We hypothesized that frail geriatric rib fracture patients would have worse outcomes than their non-frail counterparts. This single-center retrospective study includes patients from July 2019 to June 2022 who were ≥65 years-old, had ≥ 2 rib fractures, and a documented Clinical Frailty Scale score. Univariate analysis was conducted comparing frail vs non-frail, and ≤3 rib fractures vs >3 rib fractures. Multiv
