Molecular mechanisms underlying seed enlargement mediated by seed coat development in autotetraploid castor bean.

Polyploids, particularly synthetic lines, often produce larger seeds than their diploid progenitors. However, little is known regarding the role of seed coat development in the larger seeds formation in polyploid plants. Here, we investigated the cellular and molecular basis by which seed coat development mediates seed enlargement in the oilseed crop castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) following homologous chromosome doubling. We found that seeds of autotetraploid castor bean, including seed length, width, thickness and hundred-seed weight, were significantly greater than those of diploids. Hist…

Species diversity of ticks infesting dogs in the north-eastern part of Lublin Province (eastern Poland).

Ixodes ricinus followed by Dermacentor reticulatus are the most common tick species with medical and veterinary importance in Poland. Ixodes ricinus is widely distributed across Poland, whereas the range of D. reticulatus is limited to the eastern and central parts of the country, with several new foci in the mid-west and west. Concurrently, an increase in the occurrence range of D. reticulatus has been observed. Recent studies indicate its high density in eastern Poland. The aim of the study was to determine the species composition of ticks infesting dogs from the northeastern part of Lublin …

Seasonal Patterns in the Prevalence and Diversity of Tick-Borne Borrelia burgdorferi Sensu Lato, Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Rickettsia spp. in an Urban Temperate Forest in South Western Slovakia.

In Europe, Ixodes ricinus is the most important vector of tick-borne zoonotic bacteria. It transmits spirochaetes from the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex, Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Rickettsia spp. Although spatial differences in the prevalence of tick-borne pathogens have been intensively studied, seasonal (within-year) fluctuations in the prevalence of these pathogens within sites are often overlooked. We analyzed the occurrence and seasonal dynamics of Ixodes ricinus in an urban forest in Bratislava, Slovakia. Furthemore, we examined temporal trends in the community structure of…

Borrelia miyamotoi: Should this pathogen be considered for the diagnosis of tick-borne infectious diseases in Spain?

INTRODUCTION: Borrelia miyamotoi is a tick-borne pathogen belonging to the relapsing fever group. It had not been reported from Spain, but its wide distribution and the presence of the tick-vector (Ixodes ricinus) made us suspect its circulation. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of Borrelia spp. in I. ricinus in Spain. METHODS: A total of 652 I. ricinus nymphs collected in northern Spain were processed. The DNA was extracted using incubations with ammonium hydroxide. Borrelia spp. DNA was amplified using Borrelia-specific PCR assays (glpQ, 16S rRNA and flagellin genes). …

Borrelia lusitaniae and green lizards (Lacerta viridis), Karst Region, Slovakia.

In Europe, spirochetes within the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex are transmitted by Ixodes ricinus ticks. Specific associations are described between reservoir hosts and individual genospecies. We focused on green lizard (Lacerta viridis) as a host for ticks and potential host for borreliae. In 2004 and 2005, a total of 146 green lizards infested by ticks were captured, and 469 I. ricinus ticks were removed. Borrelial infection was detected in 16.6% of ticks from lizards. Of 102 skin biopsy specimens collected from lizards, 18.6% tested positive. The most frequently detected genospeci…

Detection and characterization of tick-borne encephalitis virus in Baltic countries and eastern Poland.

Ticks were collected from the vegetation in the Baltic countries Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and eastern Poland and analyzed for the presence of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) by amplification of the partial E and NS3 genes. In Estonia we found statistically significant differences in the TBEV prevalence between I. persulcatus and I. ricinus ticks (4.23% and 0.42%, respectively). In Latvia, the difference in TBEV prevalence between the two species was not statistically significant (1.02% for I. persulcatus and 1.51% for I. ricinus, respectively). In Lithuania and Poland TBEV was detected …

The Central Role of Salivary Metalloproteases in Host Acquired Resistance to Tick Feeding.

During feeding on vertebrate hosts, ticks secrete saliva composed of a rich cocktail of bioactive molecules modulating host immune responses. Although most of the proteinaceous fraction of tick saliva is of little immunogenicity, repeated feeding of ticks on mammalian hosts may lead to impairment of tick feeding, preventing full engorgement. Here, we challenged rabbits with repeated feeding of both Ixodes ricinus nymphs and adults and observed the formation of specific antibodies against several tick salivary proteins. Repeated feeding of both I. ricinus stages led to a gradual decrease in eng…

[Ecology of ixodid ticks from small mammals in the Leningrad oblast].

Collections from rodents conducted over a period of 11 years in natural nidi of tularemia in the Leningrad region include the ticks of Ixodes persulcatus, I. ricinus, I. trianguliceps and I. apronophorus. The redbacked vole is the main host of I. trianguliceps larvae. The larvae of this species have two peaks of abundance, in June and September. Larvae and other developmental phases of I. apronophorus were most abundant on water vole in June. Larvae of I. persulcatus and I. ricinus feed on small mammals in general but the latter are unessential in the feeding of nymphs.

Evaluation of Vector Competence of Ixodes Ticks for Kemerovo Virus.

Tick-borne viruses are responsible for various symptoms in humans and animals, ranging from simple fever to neurological disorders or haemorrhagic fevers. The Kemerovo virus (KEMV) is a tick-borne orbivirus, and it has been suspected to be responsible for human encephalitis cases in Russia and central Europe. It has been isolated from Ixodes persulcatus and Ixodes ricinus ticks. In a previous study, we assessed the vector competence of I. ricinus larvae from Slovakia for KEMV, using an artificial feeding system. In the current study, we used the same system to infect different tick population/…

The role of domestic dogs and cats in the zoonotic cycles of ticks and pathogens. Preliminary studies in the Wrocław Agglomeration (SW Poland).

The collection of 729 tick specimens (Ixodes ricinus, 88.6%; Ixodes hexagonus, 9.2%; Dermacentor reticulatus, 2.2%) removed from 373 dogs and 78 cats, along with 201 ticks from vegetation (I. ricinus, 75.6%; D. reticulatus, 24.4%), allows one to say that pets play an important role in maintaining tick life cycles in different urban area. It shows the lack of statistical differences between tick intensity in high-impact anthropogenic areas (HIAA), low-impact anthropogenic areas (LIAA) and mixed areas designed, in an objective way, by GIS techniques. The comparable (statistically insignificant) …

[Tick borne encephalitis and enviromental changes].

Currently observed markedly increased incidence of various tick borne diseases in many parts of Europe is due to documented climatic changes as well anthropogenic influence on habitat structure. One of the analyzed factors is tendency to increase of the spring temperatures, especially in the third decade of the April. Such conditions (spring temperatures above 7-10 degrees C) let the nymphs and larvae of Ixodes ricinus to feed simultaneously on rodents. This increases the risk of infection of Ixodes ricinus with TBE virus, so dangerous for humans.

Tick hazard in a Central European country: Mapping Europe's principal tick-borne disease vector across Germany.

The most common European tick species, Ixodes ricinus, is the principal vector of Borrelia and tick-borne encephalitis virus and several other pathogens of public health relevance in Europe. Comprehensive data on tick abundance and the underlying ecological drivers are crucial for developing awareness and control strategies and to assess future changes in tick-borne disease risk. We aimed to provide a Germany-wide map of I. ricinus abundance to aid in disease transmission risk assessment. During 2018-2020, questing tick density was assessed at 83 sites across the whole country by drag flagging…

Acarological risk of exposure to tick-borne pathogens in urban green areas of Rome, Italy.

Acarological risk (R) was assessed in urban green areas of Rome. R was calculated as the probability of encountering at least one questing tick infected by spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiae, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and/or Coxiella burnetii, in 100 m transects within paths commonly walked by park-goers. Seasonal dynamics of Ixodes ricinus, Rhipicephalus bursa and Rhipicephalus turanicus were analysed together with their infection prevalence. Targeted PCR protocols were carried out to detect Rickettsia species, and highlight the presence of C. burnetii, B. burgdorferi s.l. and Piropl…
