Effectiveness of three solvents and two associations of solvents on gutta-percha and resilon.

This study evaluated the effectiveness of 3 solvents (Citrol orange oil, Eucalyptol and Tetrachloroethylene) and 2 associations of solvents (Citrol orange oil+Tetrachloroethylene and Eucalyptol+Tetrachloroethylene) on 3 types of gutta-percha (conventional, thermoplastic and EndoREZ) and Resilon. Ten discs (10 mm diameter x 1 mm thick) from each material were prepared using standard metallic molds. Each specimen was weighed to determinate its initial mass. The specimens were immersed in the solvents for 10 min, followed by immersion in distilled water for 20 min, and were then reweighed to obta

Root canal complications: 'the hypochlorite accident'.

Root canal treatment is performed routinely in dental practice, using sodium hypochlorite which serves as an effective irrigant. The literature reviewed shows that several complications following irrigation with sodium hypochlorite may occur, but few practitioners are aware of it and its management. Such complications include injury to skin, oral mucosa and eyes, damage to clothing, air emphysema, allergic reactions, and injection beyond the foramen. In this article, a case report of injection with sodium hypochlorite beyond the foramen is presented, together with a review of the recent litera

The removal of the smear layer using EGTA: a scanning electron microscopic study.

The smear layer associated with endodontic instrumentation is currently thought to be a thin layer that occludes the orifices of the dentinal tubules and covers the intertubular dentin of the prepared canal wall. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of ethylene glycol bis (beta-amino ethyl ether)-N, N, N', N'-tetra acetic acid (EGTA) and ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA) on removal of the smear layer through the scanning electron microscopy. Twenty four single rooted teeth were selected, instrumented and irrigated with various solutions and the specimens were processed f

Effect of endodontic smear layer and various solvents on the calcium ion diffusion through radicular dentin--an in vitro study.

External root resorption and ankylosis remains the major cause of failure of replanted teeth. This study was conducted to explore the different ways to increase the pH of periradicular area in order to overcome the problem of root resorption and ankylosis. 60 freshly extracted permanent anteriors were used after removing the crown at CEJ. After biomechanical preparation Ca (OH)2 was injected and assays were done using EDTA, Citric and tannic acid Assays were repeated. Calcium diffusion and pH in the root exterior was measured using spectrophotometer. Results showed that dentin is permeable to

Three-dimensional finite element analysis of the impact of access cavity preparation on first molar fracture resistance: A scoping review.

Access cavity preparation represents the initial step in root canal treatment. Minimally invasive approaches have gained increasing attention and involve advancements in the traditional access cavity preparation. Simultaneously, the development of three-dimensional finite element analysis (3D-FEA) has provided a theoretical foundation for evaluating the merits and drawbacks of various access cavity preparations. Studies using static loading 3D-FEA have suggested that conservative access cavity preparation reduces the concentration of stress in the cervical region, thereby strengthening fractur

Mineral trioxide aggregate as repair material for furcal perforation: case series.

The purpose of treating furcal perforation is to seal the artificial communication between the endodontic space and the periradicular tissue to prevent alveolar bone resorption and damage to the periodontal ligament. These complications are not infrequent in cases of furcal and/or old perforations, which show a worse prognosis than fresh, small, coronal, and apical perforations. Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) is widely used to seal perforations because of its biocompatibility and sealability. Ten cases of furcal perforation were selected at the department of Endodontics, University of Floren

Concurrent intentional replantation of maxillary molars using a novel root-end filling.

This article describes the successful concurrent intentional replantation (IR) of 2 maxillary molars. A 28-year-old woman complained of repeated swelling and pain in the left maxilla when chewing. Teeth No. 14 and 15 were sensitive to percussion and palpation. Radiographs revealed a large periapical radiolucent lesion and inadequate root canal fillings in both teeth. The patient refused nonsurgical retreatment, periradicular surgery, or implant replacement as treatment options, so IR was chosen. After the extraction of tooth No. 14, root-end resection and root-end preparation of the 3 roots we
