STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective, case-control study.
OBJECTIVE: To examine and compare preoperative and postoperative sagittal alignment between Scheuermann Kyphosis (SK) patients and an asymptomatic, normative population.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: SK is a rigid spinal deformity seen in adolescents and young adults, characterized by hyperkyphosis and associated compensatory changes in spinal alignment. Although compensatory mechanisms in adjacent spinal segments are known to maintain global sagittal balance, limited data exist on the extent of baseline and postoperative alignment differences i

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective monocentric database study.
OBJECTIVES: To describe the "frame" reduction technique and report the 3D quantitative analysis of postoperative corrections in a consecutive series of thoracic adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Posteromedial translation technique using sublaminar bands have been proved to be efficient and safe for 3D correction of the deformity and overall cosmetic aspect of the trunk. However, the ability to correct the axial plane may tend to rotate the vertebra clockwise instead of counterclockwise, thus inc

STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze long-term clinical and radiological outcomes of surgically treated Scheuermann patients.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Long-term clinical and radiological outcomes of surgery for Scheuermann kyphosis are unknown. A single-center cohort of 33 consecutive, surgically treated (between 1991 and 1998) Scheuermann patients was studied.
METHODS: Clinical and radiological data of 29 surgically treated Scheuermann patients were collected (posterior approach n = 13; combined anterior-posterior procedure n = 16), after a mean follow-up of 18 years. Oswes

PURPOSE: Distal junctional kyphosis (DJK) is a major instrumentation-related complication after the surgical correction of Scheuermann kyphosis (SK). The exact criteria to avoid DJK have been controversial. It has been recommended to include the SSV into the fusion by some authors, while others suggest that fusion to FLV is sufficient. The purpose of this study was to investigate the occurrence of DJK in relation to distal fusion level selection in SK surgery by investigating the relationship between the sagittal stable vertebra (SSV), first lordotic vertebra (FLV), and the lowest instrumented

PURPOSE: Previous studies have demonstrated good ability to improve the sagittal profile with the use of segmental instrumentation for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) by analysing the sagittal vertical axis (SVA). However, several authors recommend analysing the spinopelvic relation in addition to the SVA. While compensatory mechanisms may neutralise a positive SVA, these mechanisms are energy consuming and may lead to unphysiological biomechanics, which can negatively influence the quality of life. The purpose of this radiographic analysis was to analyse global sagittal balance and to i

INTRODUCTION: There is sparse literature on how best to correct Scheuermann's kyphosis (SK). The efficacy of a combined strategy with anterior release and posterior fusion (AR/PSF) with regard to correction rate and outcome is yet to be determined.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A review of a consecutive series of SK patients treated with AR/PSF using pedicle screw-rod systems was performed. Assessment of demographics, complications, surgical parameters and radiographs including flexibility and correction measures, proximal junctional kyphosis angle (JKA + 1) and spino-pelvic parameters was performed

Idiopathic scoliosis (IS) is a multifactorial disease with a genetic and environmental background. Recent studies suggest that epigenetic modifications, such as DNA methylation, may contribute to the IS occurrence and course. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of LBX1, ESR1, and ESR2 gene methylation levels with susceptibility to and severity of IS. The study group (N = 63) consisted of 56 female and 7 male IS patients. The patients were analyzed in two subgroups based on the Cobb angle: ≤ 75° (N = 36) and > 75° (N = 27). The control group (N = 30) consisted of 27 females an

PURPOSE: Surgical treatment for Scheuermann's Kyphosis (SK) in adolescents is well-established, but its role in adults remains controversial. This study challenges the traditional non-operative stance by evaluating the clinical outcomes of surgery in adult SK patients, using a matched cohort of adult idiopathic scoliosis (Adult IS) patients as a clinical benchmark.
METHODS: A retrospective, 1:3 matched-cohort study from a multicenter database with a minimum 2-year follow-up. Thirty-three SK patients were matched with 99 Adult IS patients by age and number of instrumented levels. Demographics,

The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of surgical correction of the thoracic deformity on the cardiorespiratory function of patients with moderate-severe Scheuermann's hyperkyphosis (SK). A series of 23 adolescents with SK who underwent surgery through an only posterior approach using all pedicle screw constructs were included in the study. Cardiorespiratory parameters were measured during a maximal exercise tolerance test before and 2 years after surgery. Heart rate, oxygen saturation (SatO2), maximum oxygen uptake (VO2 max), ventilatory capacity at maximal exercise (VEmax), and ene

PURPOSE: Scheuermann kyphosis is the most common structural kyphosis among adolescence and young people. Surgical treatment may be performed through combined anterior and posterior or posterior-only approaches; to our knowledge, the efficacy of posterior-only approach as less invasive procedure is not well studied in case of severe rigid Scheuermann kyphosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighteen patients with severe rigid Scheuermann kyphosis operated through only posterior approach from 2013 to 2016 were evaluated. All information regarding demographic data, curve size before and after the surger

This is a retrospective study of eight consecutive patients of mean age 19 (13-27) years with severe Scheuermann's kyphosis who underwent anterior and/or posterior fusion using the Cotrel-Dubousset (CD) instrumentation. In two an anterior release and fusion with rib grafts had been previously performed. The mean follow-up was 5 years. The preoperative hyperkyphosis averaged 86 degrees (71 degrees - 99 degrees), which was postoperatively 44 degrees (32 degrees - 58 degrees). The average loss of correction was 4.6 degrees (1 degrees - 12 degrees). The lumbar hyperlordosis spontaneously improved

Controversial opinions have been published concerning the frequency of LBP among children and adolescents. Studies from orthopaedics or neurosurgical departments have reported low figures for prevalence of specific LBP due to serious disorders. Field surveys, on the contrary, have shown that cumulative life prevalence of non-specific LBP in children and teenagers can be comparable to the prevalence data for adult populations. Some specific diagnoses are more common or characteristic of children complaining of LBP. Age, gender, sports activities and family history of LBP have been found to be s

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review of a prospectively collected, multicentered database from the Scoliosis Research Society.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate incidences of complications in a series of spinal fusions for Scheuermann kyphosis (SK) and to assess whether the incidence of complications is associated with patient age and surgical approach.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Although there is some evidence that adolescents have lower complication rates for spinal deformity surgery, this has not been well-documented for SK. Moreover, there is a lack of consensus on surgical approach for the managem
