Crude, diluted venoms of Parabuthus transvaalicus and P. granulatus were tested on isolated cardiomyocytes. Ventricular myocytes were subjected to hypercontractility tests and whole-cell voltage clamp. Both venoms had a profound influence on the hypercontractility of cardiomyocytes, which was markedly decreased when they were pre-absorbed with commercial antiserum. Whole-cell clamp results showed an increase in the sodium current, and a retardation of the time course of inactivation, implicating the presence of an alpha toxin in both venoms.

New World scorpion venom contains protein toxins specific for ion channels in the plasmalemma of excitable cells. This study was designed to investigate the convulsant effects of T. serrulatus scorpion venom in rats. Pretreatment of rats with venom increased the minimum convulsant dose of picrotoxin, impaired convulsion generalization and displaced to the left the dose-response curve for picrotoxin. The effects of venom from the Indian red scorpion Buthus tamulus (BT) on neuromuscular transmission have been investigated by means of twitch tension and electrophysical recording techniques using isolated skeletal muscle preparations. A manganese containing superoxide dismutase was purified to homogeneity from the venom of scorpion Heterometrus fulvipes by ammonium sulfate fractionation followed by gel filtration on Sephadex G-100 and ion exchange chromatography on DEAE-cellulose. We undertook a retrospective analysis of 35 victims of red scorpion (Mesobuthus tamulus) sting, admitted to our hospital in Mahad, Maharashtra State, India. Increase in duration as well as severity of clinical signs, including myocardial injury and poor response to conventional treatment, were observed in 17 victims treated with atropine compared to another 18 victims who were not so treated. We do not advocate routine use of atropine to block transient cholinergic effects of scorpion envenoming.

Fifty-four children from the Jerusalem area were studied prospectively following scorpion envenoming. Their ages ranged from 11 months to 10 years. Severe symptoms (convulsions, brain oedema, shock, respiratory distress and myocarditis) were encountered in 19. An i.v. bolus injection of a purified scorpion toxin (tityustoxin, TsTX) in urethane anesthetized rats induced a dramatic increase in volume, acid and pepsin output of gastric juice and a significant decrease in its pH.
