Eyelid tumors are the most common neoplasm in daily ophthalmology practice and encompass a wide variety of benign and malignant tumors. In this retrospective study, we report the clinical and histological features of 5504 eyelid skin tumors diagnosed at the Laboratory of Ophthalmopathology of the Hôpital Ophtalmique Jules Gonin, Lausanne, Switzerland, between January 1989 and December 2007. Many ophthalmic plastic surgical problems are ignored because the patient seems to be ""getting along." Frequently physicians are only vaguely aware of the constant daily discomfort their patients experience from seemingly minor problems such as endocrine exophthalmos, an ill-fitting prosthesis or baggy eyelids. As a result, too often the patient is unaware of the treatment possibilities that are available to relieve and often eliminate his problem. These conditions are often first seen by the family physician.

Isotretinoin is a new orally active retinoic acid derivative for the treatment of severe refractory nodulocystic acne. The pharmacological profile of isotretinoin suggests that it acts primarily by reducing sebaceous gland size and sebum production, and as a result alters skin surface lipid composition. A case of tuberous sclerosis in a 29-year-old female is reported. Over a period of 7 years renal failure had developed, with recurrent renal bleeding. The patient had therefore to be nephrectomized and is awaiting kidney transplant. The involvement of other organs and the longterm course of the disease are discussed in the light of the literature. The question whether kidney transplantation should be performed is considered.

The association between Lynch syndrome and sebaceous neoplasms is well characterized. The absence of expression of mismatch repair proteins (MMRPs) by immunohistochemistry (IHC) is often used in other Lynch-associated tumors to guide testing. IHC for MLH1, PMS2, MSH2, and MSH6 was performed on 36 benign and malignant sebaceous neoplasms with the absence of one or more MMRP in 38.9% of cases.
