Perceived self-esteem among children diagnosed with precocious puberty.

Self-esteem is known to be altered in children with chronic illness. Do accelerated normal changes, such as those that occur in children with precocious puberty, also alter the child's self-esteem? Twenty-eight children with precocious puberty participated in a nonrandomized descriptive pilot study using a structured interview, the Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale, and self-portrait drawings. Results indicate that the overall self-esteem of the majority of children was within normal limits as measured by the Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale, but closer analysis found that m

This article begins with the story of a 51-year-old Los Angeles, California man, Justin Goldberg, whose daughter caught a glimpse of his striking look-alike at a popular market. Many people have so-called doppelgängers, but this occurrence is especially intriguing - the individual in question, born in New York City in the mid-1960s to an unwed mother, was an adoptee placed by the Louise Wise Adoption Agency. This agency, under the guidance of a prominent psychiatrist, decided to place twins in separate homes. Some of these twin children were part of a controversial child development study that

Are personality patterns and clinical syndromes associated with patients' motives and perceived outcome of orthognathic surgery?

PURPOSE: A study of surgical-orthodontic patients was performed to assess whether signs of personality patterns and psychologically defined clinical syndromes influenced patients' motives for treatment, perceived oral function, self-concept, social interaction, and overall satisfaction with treatment. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The sample consisted of 92 adult surgical-orthodontic patients. They filled out 3 questionnaires from Kiyak et al: one on motives for treatment; another on perceived oral function, self-concept, and social interaction; and a third on satisfaction with treatment outcome. Physical and psychological effects of aerobic exercise in boys with learning disabilities.

Aerobic exercise has been associated with improvements in psychological status and physical fitness in adults, but its effects on children are less clear. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of an aerobic exercise program on the self-concept, academic achievement, motor proficiency, and cardiovascular fitness of boys with learning disabilities. Fifty-four boys were randomly assigned to one of two exercise programs lasting 20 weeks. One program emphasized aerobic exercise and the other consisted of similar but less vigorous activities. The self-concept, academic achievement, m

Estimating the Epidemiology and Quantifying the Damages of Parental Separation in Children and Adolescents.

Parental separation is linked to multiple negative outcomes for children in all spheres of life. A field study was designed to estimate the epidemiology and to quantify the outcomes on the wellbeing of children from separated parents. Thus, data on socio-economic status, psychological adjustment, behavioral disorders, social relations, self-concept, and academic achievement were gathered from 346 children and adolescents, 173 separated parents, and 173 parents from intact families in the paediatric catchment area of Galicia (Spain). The results showed that parental separation had a significant

Nonlinear Associations Between Co-Rumination and Both Social Support and Depression Symptoms.

Co-ruminating about one's problems appears to involve both beneficial self-disclosure and harmful rumination, suggesting that moderate levels may be the most adaptive. This study used nonlinear regression to determine whether moderate levels of self-reported co-rumination in relationships with a sibling, parent, friend, and romantic partner are linked to the highest levels of self-perceived social support and lowest levels of self-reported depression symptoms in 175 emerging adults (77% female; M = 19.66 years). As expected, moderate co-rumination was associated with high social support across

Self-injury and self-mutilation. Nursing approaches.

Self-injury/self-mutilation behaviors often are associated with organic conditions, such as mental retardation, encephalitis, Lesch-Nyhan disease, de Lange syndrome, Tourette's syndrome, acute intoxication, Addison's disease, and various behavioral and personality disorders. Among the many reasons why individuals resort to self-injury/self-mutilation are to reduce tension, the communication of intense or depressive emotions, dissociative experiences, or to gain control of earlier traumatic experiences through reenactment. The treatment of clients who engage in self-injury/self-mutilation must

The importance of highlighting the role of the self in hypnotherapy and hypnosis.

The role of the patient in hypnotherapy can be underestimated by both the therapist and the patient. This is likely due to the focus the hypnosis literature has had on the role played by the hypnotist/therapist and less on the phenomenological control (control over subjective experience) applied by the patient. Whilst early approaches to hypnosis and hypnotherapy included concepts such as autosuggestion and self-hypnosis, the role of the self has been largely overlooked. Here we aim to highlight the importance of the self in hypnotherapy and hypnosis by considering the concept of self-hypnosis

Self-care in People With Motor Neuron Disease: An Integrative Review.

INTRODUCTION: Self-care is a crucial aspect in the management of chronic diseases. People with motor neuron disease (MND) live with a chronic degenerative condition in rapid evolution, which leads them to high dependencies. During their illness, they must apply several behaviors including adherence to ventilation and nutritional therapy. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this review is to systematically explore the concept of self-care for people with MND. METHOD: An integrative review of the literature has been conducted. The electronic databases CINAHL, PubMed, and SCOPUS were searched. RESULTS:

Personality and object relations in patients with affective disorders: idiographic research by means of the repertory grid technique.

BACKGROUND: This paper presents an idiographic approach to evaluate the self concept and the self-object-relationship of patients suffering from affective disorders. METHODS: Significant dimensions of the personality and the object relations of 127 depressive patients and 34 orthopaedic patients were investigated with the repertory grid-technique. The self concept and the object relations were compared by means of nomothetically used idiographic results after recovery from manifest depression. RESULTS: 'Low self esteem' was frequently found in patients with a long lasting course of illness a…

Correlates of functional status, self-management, and developmental competence outcomes in adolescents with spina bifida.

Adolescents with spina bifida (SB), a congenital spinal cord impairment, are at high risk for negative outcomes. Even those with favorable cognitive status often fail to achieve independence, exhibiting poor functional and psychosocial outcomes. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between adaptation outcomes (functional status, self-management, and developmental competence) and SB condition-specific, adolescent protective factors, and family protective factors in a sample of adolescents with SB. Individual, interpersonal, and social developmental competence were explored.

Resilience factors and their role in clinical high-risk for psychosis.

OBJECTIVE: Recent approaches in psychosis research have emphasized the importance of the combined analysis of risk and resilience factors. A resilience-integrated approach offers a more comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms underlying symptom associations and progression in individuals at clinical high-risk (CHR) for psychosis. Network analysis allows the examination of relationships among mental health conditions together with both risk and resilience factors. To our knowledge, this is the first study that investigated associations between resilience, risk factors, and psychosis-risk

Understanding inner self-states in eating disorders: preliminary findings from a structured elicitation study.

PURPOSE: Eating disorders are frequently associated with fragmented self-experiences, including harsh self-criticism, shame, and withdrawal, which may be difficult to articulate using standard clinical interviews. Structured elicitation tools may support the exploration of these internal self-states in a clinically meaningful way. METHODS: A total of 14 women receiving treatment for eating disorders at a specialised Italian centre participated in a structured elicitation interview using nine visual-symbolic self-part cards developed for clinical use. For each card, participants provided a num

An exploration of self-continuity for rural Indigenous youth: Considering the influence of community and cultural factors on perceiving oneself across time.

Research on self- and cultural continuity has contributed to our understanding of resilience processes in Indigenous communities, as connecting oneself to the past, present, and future of one's family, community, and traditional culture has been found to protect against deleterious developmental outcomes. To examine factors associated with self-continuity for Indigenous youth in the current study, Indigenous youth from six rural Ojibway and Métis communities in Treaty 2 Territory completed self-report questionnaires aimed at understanding the relationship between the concept of oneself across

Generalized Self-Efficacy, Dispositional Optimism, and Illness Acceptance in Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common chronic endocrinopathies affecting between 5 and 10% of reproductive age women. A diagnosis of PCOS very often causes a deterioration in the woman's self-esteem and self-image, and consequently her quality of life (QoL). The purpose of the study was to investigate generalized self-efficacy, dispositional optimism and acceptance of illness in women with PCOS and to explore factors that affect these variables. The study was performed between January and November 2016 among women with PCOS using health care services. The study used a diag

[Study of stutter originating from the frustrated clinging instinct and its relation to anxiety and self-esteem].

INTRODUCTION: The analytic and family therapeutic theories connected to the topic of stutter have to be actualized. AIM: The aim of this work was to point out connections which originate from the instinct of frustrated clinging, however, these can be interpretated in new ways these days. METHOD: Two questionnaires in 48 subjects suffering from stutter were used; Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale measured the children's self representation, while the Multidimensional Anxiety Scale for Children measured the degree of their anxiety. At first the subjects had to anwser the questions as themselves, f

Self-Compassion and Responses to Trauma: The Role of Emotion Regulation.

Emerging literature suggests that self-compassion may be an important concept for understanding recovery from the impact of trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The present study explored the interconnection among self-compassion, resilience, emotion dysregulation, and PTSD symptom severity in a sample of treatment-seeking women with PTSD. We predicted that self-compassion would be negatively related to PTSD symptom severity and to emotion dysregulation, and positively related to resilience. The results supported our main hypotheses. In addition, emotion dysregulation mediated the

Emotion regulation difficulties in anorexia nervosa: Relationship to self-perceived sensory sensitivity.

Changes in sensation (e.g., prickly skin) are crucial constituents of emotional experience, and the intensity of perceived changes has been linked to emotional intensity and dysregulation. The current study examined the relationship between sensory sensitivity and emotion regulation among adults with anorexia nervosa (AN), a disorder characterised by disturbance in the experience of the body. Twenty-one individuals with AN, 20 individuals with AN who were weight-restored, and 23 typical controls completed self-report measures of sensory sensitivity and emotion regulation. AN participants repor
