Performances of an ELISA, an immunofluorescence assay (IFA) and a complement fixation test (CFT) were assessed for detecting antibodies against Coxiella burnetii after Q fever abortions in naturally infected goats. The goal of the study was to provide information useful for veterinary serodiagnosis in regard to categories of goats either experiencing Q fever abortion or not, blood sampling times and recommended cut-offs. The study was conducted on eight goat herds with evidence of C. burnetii abortions. In each herd, at least 5 goats that had aborted and 10 goats prior to parturition or at ter

Four serologic assays for leptospirosis had sensitivities of 72 to 88% and specificities of 88 to 100% in the setting of highly endemic urban transmission, indicating that assays using enzyme-linked immunosorbency and rapid formats may be used as alternatives to the microscopic agglutination test for diagnosing urban leptospirosis. Testing a second sample will be required in cases with an initial negative result, since sensitivity was low (46 to 68%) during the first week of illness.

Cat-scratch disease (CSD), caused by Bartonella henselae infection, can mimic malignancy and can manifest atypically. Reliable serological testing is therefore of great clinical importance. The diagnostic performance of immunofluorescence assay (IFA) and ELISA was evaluated in a group of Dutch patients with proven CSD (clinical diagnosis confirmed by PCR). Sera of 51 CSD patients and 56 controls (patients with similar symptoms, but who were B. henselae PCR-negative and had an alternative confirmed diagnosis) were tested for anti-B. henselae IgM and IgG by IFA and ELISA. BACKGROUND: Clinical audit is an important tool for reviewing and improving the quality of service in clinical laboratories. Here we present an audit of total serology test requests and the frequency of positive tests out of these in a calendar year.
METHODS: This is an audit of serology tests carried out at Microbiology section of Clinical Laboratory of Ayub Teaching Hospital, Abbottabad. We counted all the serology test requests for the year 2004. These tests requests were grouped month wise. The frequency of positive tests out of the total test requests were calculated. The tests included

Brucellosis is a common zoonotic disease transmittable to humans from infected animal reservoirs. Malta, Rock, Gibraltar, Cyprus or Mediterranean fever, Bang's disease, intermittent typhoid or typho-malarial fever, undulant fever, etc. are just various synonyms for brucellosis. Patients suffering from this disease show unspecific symptoms, e.g. fever, chills, malaise, arthralgia, headache, tiredness and weakness. Human brucellosis may be caused by four of totally six genetically and phenotypically closely related Brucella species, i.e. B. melitensis, B. abortus, B. suis and B. canis. Although

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The significance of abnormal liver function tests in the absence of diagnostic serology is unclear. The aim of this study was to report liver biopsy findings in a large group of patients with unexplained abnormal liver biochemistry.
METHODS: Histological findings were examined in 354 patients who underwent liver biopsy to investigate abnormal liver function tests.
RESULTS: Six percent of patients had a normal liver biopsy while 26% were found to have some degree of fibrosis and 6% were cirrhotic. Thirty four and 32% of biopsies suggested non-alcoholic steatohepatits or fatty

Three experiments were performed in order to assess the diagnostic value of the Brucellin allergic skin test (AST) in a brucellosis false positive serological reactions (FPSR) context. First, 1259 cattle from 20 Brucella-free herds in a FPSR area were tested twice with AST to estimate its specificity. Secondly, AST and serological tests (complement fixation test [CFT], tube agglutination test, dithiothreitol-microagglutination test and ELISA) sensitivities were evaluated on 111 cattle positive to the Rose Bengal test (RBT) belonging to 15 Brucella-infected herds. Thirdly, AST was used in a fie

A total of 70 bilharzial mansonian patients (Group I: 20 early intestinal mansonian patients, Group II: 20 hepatosplenic mansonian patients without ascites, Group III: 30 hepatosplenic mansonian patients with ascites) and 30 normal controls were studied. Using the circumoval percipitin test (COPT), there was a statistically significant difference between sensitivities in Group I and Group III with higher sensitivity for Group I. Using either the indirect haemagglutination test (IHA) or the indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT), there was no statistically significant difference between the

Sera have been submitted to the authors' laboratory for syphilis testing at a dramatically increased rate since the start of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 epidemic. Thus they were interested in evaluating a new enzyme immunoassay, the DCL Syphilis-G test kit (DCL-G, Diagnostic Chemicals Ltd., Oxford, CT) for detection of immunoglobulin G antibodies to Treponema pallidum. The enzyme immunoassay format, with its potential for automation, is ideally suited for large volume batch testing. Five hundred eighty-five sera collected primarily from pediatric patients were subjected to rapid pl

Sixty-three sera were analysed for antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferi with an in-house indirect immunofluorescence assay. Thirty-nine sera were positive (titer greater than or equal to 256), seven borderline (titer 128) and 17 negative (titer less than or equal to 64). These results were compared with results obtained with four different commercial assays for detection of such antibodies. Indirect immunofluorescence tests yielded most positive results. The flagellin ELISA test detected antibodies in patients with erythema chronicum migrans (ECM) more often than the other test systems. Ser

Of 78 apparently healthy subjects with positive serological tests for Chagas disease, 29 had EKG abnormalities. On direct questioning only two referred dyspnea, one had palpitations and another one dizziness. The most frequent EKG abnormalities were: peaked T waves in 10 cases; ventricular premature beats in 8 patients, right bundle branch block in 7, left bundle branch block in 5, abnormal ST-T segment in 4, atrial fibrillation in 3 cases, left ventricular hypertrophy in 3, and left anterior hemiblock in 3. As has been previously recognized, the EKG changes plus the positive serological tests

The value of various serological tests in the diagnosis of paracoccidioidomycosis was studied. Quantitative agar-gel immunodiffusion and indirect immunofluorescent tests were performed, and the results were compared with those of complement fixation and qualitative agar-gel procedures. The quantitative immunodiffusion procedure was found to serve as the simplest and safest quantitative test that could be performed for evaluation purposes, whereas the indirect fluorescent-antibody test gave nonspecific reactions and, as such, proved unsuitable.

Background: Increased demand of the serological biomarker test (GastroPanel®) in non-invasive diagnosis of gastric cancer (GC) risk conditions, i.e., atrophic gastritis (AG) and Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection, prompted the design of GastroPanel® Quick test (GPQT) (Biohit Oyj, Helsinki, Finland) for point-of-care (POC) settings. Objective: This study validated the diagnostic accuracy (DA) of GPQT in diagnosis of AG and Hp among gastroscopy referral patients. Methods: Altogether, 266 patients were enrolled among the consecutive gastroscopy referrals at the Department of Gastroenterology, For

BACKGROUND: Congenital syphilis is a preventable disease and a direct reflection of rates of syphilis in the population. Between 2013 and 2022, Australia's infectious syphilis notification rate increased six-fold in women. Between 2013 and 2022, 54% (n = 45) of congenital syphilis cases were reported in Aboriginal infants, and 61% (n = 11) of congenital syphilis-associated deaths between 2016 and 2022 occurred in Aboriginal infants. In 2018, Communicable Diseases Network Australia National Guidelines were updated, recommending syphilis serology testing five times for women during the perinatal

BACKGROUND: Serological screening tests play a crucial role to diagnose gambiense human African trypanosomiasis (gHAT). Presently, they preselect individuals for microscopic confirmation, but in future "screen and treat" strategies they will identify individuals for treatment. Variability in reported specificities, the development of new rapid diagnostic tests (RDT) and the hypothesis that malaria infection may decrease RDT specificity led us to evaluate the specificity of 5 gHAT screening tests.
METHODS: During active screening, venous blood samples from 1095 individuals from Côte d'Ivoire a

Control of canine infections with Leishmania infantum (L. infantum), a major zoonotic disease in Brazil and southern Europe, is becoming increasingly important due to its close proximity to humans, the increasing import of dogs from endemic regions and the impact of climate change on vector spreading. Simple, rapid and reliable diagnostic tests are therefore needed to detect infected dogs. Here, we re-evaluated different serological methods for the diagnosis of canine leishmaniosis (CanL) in Croatia and Brazil. The diagnostic performance of the indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) and the
