Childhood and Adolescent/Adult Sexual Abuse in Relation to Sexual Function and Distress: Findings from a Cross-Cultural Study of 42 Countries.

Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and adolescent/adult sexual assault (AASA) are significant public health issues that profoundly impact sexual well-being. This study examined the associations between CSA, AASA, and sexual function and distress across diverse demographic groups and cultural contexts. A cross-sectional, self-report study was conducted using the International Sex Survey with 82,243 participants from 42 countries. Data were analyzed using 3D association analyses and structural equation modeling to assess the impact of CSA and AASA on sexual function problems and sexual distress. Findi

Labeling of sexual assault and its relationship with sexual functioning: the mediating role of coping.

Little research has examined the relationship between women's labeling of their sexual assault experiences and sexual functioning, as well as identification of variables that may mediate the labeling-trauma outcome relationship. The purpose of this study was to fill this gap in the literature, by examining the potential mediating role of coping strategies in response to sexual assault in the relationship between labeling and sexual functioning. The sample included 135 college women with a history of adolescent/early adulthood sexual assault. Labeling was not bivariately related to sexual funct

Questioning the role of abuse in behavioral spells and epilepsy.

Past sexual trauma is frequently linked to the development of behavioral spells, present among 30% of patients admitted for video/EEG monitoring. Current attempts to verify and explore mechanisms in this reported association revealed that patients with epilepsy (n=58) and those with behavioral spells (n=38) did not differ in their self-report of past sexual trauma (among approximately 38% in each group). Ninety percent (90%) of men with behavioral spells endorsed past physical abuse, however, compared with 45% of men with epilepsy, and 40% of men with spells likely met current criteria for pos…

Screening elite winter athletes for exercise induced asthma: a comparison of three challenge methods.

Military sexual trauma (MST), an unfortunately common experience reported by U.S. service members and veterans, frequently leads to symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other related conditions. However, little is known about how contextual features of MST correlate with specific clinical phenotypes and symptom presentations. The current study examined correlations between contextual factors of MST and cumulative interpersonal trauma history with diverse clinical outcomes, including PTSD symptom clusters, depressive symptoms, worry, and posttraumatic cognitions in a sizeable tr…

Childhood Trauma Associated White Matter Abnormalities in First-Episode Schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is associated with brain connection irregularities within and between brain regions. Childhood trauma increases the risk of schizophrenia suggesting that the relationships between childhood trauma and brain connectivity requires further investigation. Here, we examine the relationship between childhood trauma (as measured by the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire) and fractional anisotropy (FA) in 54 minimally treated first-episode schizophrenia (FES) patients and 51 community matched controls. Patients who experienced high levels of trauma had significantly lower FA in the inferior

Interpersonal trauma and animal-related experiences in female and male military veterans: implications for program development.

Exposure to trauma is more frequent than was previously recognized. The prevalence and impact of trauma events, including trauma involving animals, was assessed in age-matched male and female veterans. High rates of exposure to at least one trauma event were reported by males (95%) and females (97%). Females were more likely to report sexual and physical abuse by a significant other. Both genders experienced higher trauma rates in the military than in civilian settings. A survey of animal-related experiences showed similar rates of losing a special pet, being frightened or hurt by an animal, w

Linking gene expression patterns and brain morphometry to trauma and symptom severity in patients with functional seizures.

Within stress-diathesis models, adverse life experiences (ALEs) increase the susceptibility to functional neurological symptoms through neuroplasticity effects. We aimed to characterize potential genetic influences on this relationship in 20 patients with functional seizures. Questionnaires, structural MRIs and Allen Human Brain Atlas gene expression information were used to probe the intersection of symptom severity (Somatoform Dissociation Questionnaire, SDQ-20), ALE burden, and gray matter volumes. SDQ-20 scores positively correlated with sexual trauma, emotional neglect, and threat to life…

The Experience of Working With Individuals Who Sexually Offend.

Providing treatment to those who have committed sexual offenses can be difficult and challenging work. Older studies have suggested that service providers may experience changes in mood, symptoms of trauma, and countertransference reactions due to their work. Recent research has found that effective coping and self-care strategies may mitigate these negative outcomes. Given the relative dearth of recent empirical studies, we assessed the prevalence of self-reported mood, trauma symptoms, and countertransference reactions and their relation to coping styles and self-care practices in a sample o

Parental sexual health development support for emerging adolescents in western upstate New York: a qualitative interpretive description study.

Parents and caregivers are critical in supporting emerging adolescents as they begin developing the foundations of sexual health and wellbeing. This study aimed to explore how parents and caregivers support sexual health development among emerging adolescents aged 10-14 years in Monroe County, New York. A qualitative interpretive description and conventional content analysis approach guided data collection and analysis. Purposive maximum variation and snowball sampling resulted in 20 participants being recruited and engaged in semi-structured in-depth interviews. Parents described sexual healt

The effect of sexual abuse and dissociation on suicide attempt.

BACKGROUND: Suicide attempt is the most predictive risk factor of suicide. Trauma - especially sexual abuse - is a risk factor for suicide attempt and suicide. A common reaction to sexual abuse is dissociation. Higher levels of dissociation are linked to self-harm, suicide ideation, and suicide attempt, but the role of dissociation in suicidal behavior is unclear. METHODS: In this naturalistic study, ninety-seven acute psychiatric patients with suicidal ideation, of whom 32 had experienced sexual abuse, were included. Suicidal behaviour was assessed with The Columbia suicide history form (CSH

Childhood trauma is associated with severe clinical characteristics of bipolar disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Beyond genetic risk variants, the pathophysiology of bipolar disorders is likely to be partly determined by environmental susceptibility factors. Our study is one of the first to investigate, in a large sample of well-characterized bipolar patients, associations between clinical presentations and childhood trauma subtypes, including neglect and abuse items. METHOD: 587 patients with DSM-IV-defined bipolar disorder were recruited from France and Norway between 1996-2008 and 2007-2012, respectively. History of childhood trauma was obtained using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. Cl

Trauma type influences women's health care-related trust and engagement.

OBJECTIVE: Despite having greater health service needs, trauma survivors often report reduced health care engagement. This association can be, at least in part, explained by survivors' mistrust of providers. To date, the differential impact of specific trauma types on health care-related trust and engagement remains unknown. This study examines the unique influence of various trauma types on trust in doctors and health care underutilization in a community sample of women. METHOD: Participants (N = 150 women, 66.7% White; Mage = 41.5 years, SDage = 11.8 years) recruited via an online crowdsour
