The effects on breathing movements and sleep state of cholecystokinin octapeptide (CCK-8) and its antagonist, proglumide, have been studied in unanaesthetised fetal lambs of 124-142 days gestation. CCK-8 when given into a lateral cerebral ventricle as bolus injections of 10-500 ng caused dose-related periods of apnea ranging from 63-214 min. When given as a 100 ng bolus followed by a 50 ng/h infusion for 2 h there was a prolonged period of apnea lasting 331 +/- 56 min. In a common bile duct contamination model, we studied the effect of Streptococcus faecalis compared with Escherichia coli in sheep with chronic lymph fistulas to investigate the role of enterococcus in acute lung injury and acute sepsis. The sera and livers of slaughtered lambs were studied in October 1987 in order to achieve a suitable interpretation of the indirect haemagglutination assay (IHA) in the diagnosis of fascioliasis in flocks. In view of these studies, it is concluded that the IHA is useful in the early diagnosis of liver fluke infection in lambs. It is recommended to take samples from at least five lambs in each flock. An interpretation model is provided.

The recent recognition that Q fever is endemic in Ontario and the known occupational risk of Q fever to research personnel working with sheep prompted a study to determine the prevalence of antibodies to the causative organism, Coxiella burnetti, in animals and staff at a Toronto animal research institute. The temporal sequence of morphological changes occurring in the prefemoral lymph nodes of sheep experimentally infected with Trypanosoma brucei was studied at weekly intervals during the course of infection. Histopathological changes started with lymphoid stimulation which was soon overtaken and masked by intense proliferation of reticulo-endothelial cells. In series of 4 trials dose rates of 3.8, 4.75 and 7.5 mg/kg of albendazole were given to sheep either as a single or repeat dose such as may be given under field conditions. Efficacy against 6-to 7-week-old Fasciola hepatica ranged from 16.0% to 43.6%. Efficacy against mature 12- to 17-week-old fluke ranged from 74.4% to 94.5%.

Lambs severely parasitized by Haemonchus, Ostertagia, Trichostrongylus, Cooperia, Oesophagostomum, and Nematodirus were treated with fenbendazole (methyl 5-(phenylthio)-2-benzimidazolecarbamate) given at 3 dose levels: 3.5, 5.0, and 7.5 mg/kg of body weight. Efficacies against these genera, except Haemonchus and Nematodirus, were 100% at the 3 dose levels. Efficacies for the 3 doses against Haemonchus were 93.4, 95.3, and 99.8%, respectively, and against Nematodirus, 99.5, 99.6, and 100%.
