Common foot problems. Relieving the pain of bunions, keratoses, corns, and calluses.

Many of the painful foot problems seen in adults are easily treated. Bunions and bunionettes often respond to a change to wide, soft-toed shoes or sandals and the temporary use of a mild anti-inflammatory agent. Initial treatment of plantar keratoses is trimming and use of cushioning shoe inserts. Diffuse keratoses may require reconstructive surgery if metatarsal deformity is the cause. Seed corns and soft corns respond to trimming, and alleviation of pressure with padding and wearing of open-toed shoes is beneficial in these lesions as well as in hard corns. Surgical resection of any underlyi…

Running Velocity as a Methodological Factor in Footwear Testing: Fixed Versus Self-Selected Conditions.

Running velocity is an important methodological factor in footwear research, given its potential influence on biomechanical parameters used … ity. Twenty-two runners completed outdoor running trials at two running velocities in seven running shoes differing in cushioning and midsole bending stiffness. Four commonly used inertial measurement unit-derived biomechanical parameters were assessed to determine whether shoe-specific responses differed between the two velocity conditions. Across all …

Shod wear and foot alignment in clinical gait analysis.

Sagittal plane alignment of the foot presents challenges when the subject wears shoes during gait analysis. Typically, visual alignment is performed by positioning two markers, the heel and toe markers, aligned with the foot within the shoe. Alternatively, software alignment is possible when the sole of the shoe lies parallel to the ground, and the change in the shoe's sole thickness is measured and entered as a parameter. The aim of this technical note was to evaluate the accuracy of visual and software foot alignment during shod gait analysis. We calculated the static standing ankle angles o…

Orthotic approach to prevention and management of diabetic foot: A narrative review.

Diabetic foot is a common complication affecting more than one-fifth of patients with diabetes. If not treated in time, it may lead to diabe … insole material, modifying the heel height, adding a steel shank or rocker sole, and using in-depth shoes. Alternatively, a walking brace or ankle-foot orthosis can be used to reduce the pressure on the affected foot. The purpose of this narrative review was to provide a reference guide to support clinicians in prescribing shoe modifications and foot or …

MODIFYING MIDSOLE STIFFNESS of BASKETBALL FOOTWEAR AFFECTS FOOT and ANKLE BIOMECHANICS.

BACKGROUND: There is a growing incidence of foot injuries in basketball, which may be from the sport's repetitive, forceful multi-directional demands. Modifying midsole stiffness of the basketball shoe has been reported to alter ankle motion and plantar forces to reduce the risk of injury; however, the effects on anatomical, in-shoe foot (metatarsal), motion is not well understood. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify differences in foot and ankle biomechanics between basketball shoes with differing midsole stiffness values during single-leg jump landings. It was hypothesized th…

Influence of Torsional Stiffness in Badminton Footwear on Lower Limb Biomechanics.

Torsional stiffness of athletic footwear plays a crucial role in preventing injury and improving sports performance. Yet, there is a lack of research focused on the biomechanical effect of torsional stiffness in badminton shoes. This study aimed to comprehensively investigate the influence of three different levels of torsional stiffness in badminton shoes on biomechanical characteristics, sports performance, and injury risk in badminton players. Fifteen male players, aged 22.8 ± 1.96 years, participated in the study, performing badminton-specific tasks, including forehand clear stroke [left f…

Acute Change of Footwear Limits Performance and Alters Foot Strike Patterns During Anticipated and Unanticipated 90° Change of Direction.

BACKGROUND: Footwear influences performance and injury risk during change-of-direction (COD) movements. However, few studies have investigated how different shoe types influence COD biomechanics, particularly under ecologically valid conditions such as at sharp angles and under unanticipated conditions. This study examined the impact of barefoot, minimalist, and standard sport shoes on biomechanical and performance parameters during 90° COD tasks. METHODS: Forty-one participants (14 females and 27 males) completed a randomized crossover study, performing anticipated and unanticipated 90° COD …

Decreased Vertical Trunk Inclination Angle and Pelvic Inclination as the Result of Mid-High-Heeled Footwear on Static Posture Parameters in Asymptomatic Young Adult Women.

The influence of high-heel footwear on the lumbar lordosis angle, anterior pelvic tilt, and sacral tilt are inconsistently described in the literature. This study aimed to investigate the impact of medium-height heeled footwear on the static posture parameters of homogeneous young adult standing women. Heel geometry, data acquisition process, as well as data analysis and parameter extraction stage, were controlled. Seventy-six healthy young adult women with experience in wearing high-heeled shoes were enrolled. Data of fifty-three subjects were used for analysis due to exclusion criteria (scol…

Split anterior tibial transfer for spastic equinovarus foot deformity: retrospective study of 73 operated feet.

The aim of this study was to describe the long-term results of split tibialis transfer in patients with stroke, cerebral palsy, and brain damage due to trauma, tumor, or infection. An evaluation was made of 73 feet in 69 patients with tendon transfer or lengthening for an average follow-up period of 44 months (range, 1 to 14 years). Ankle arthrodesis. Long-term follow-up with gait analysis.

A functional assessment of twelve patients after ankle arthrodesis for post-traumatic arthritis was carried out by means of an extensive clinical evaluation and gait analysis after an average follow-up of eight years. A weighted point system was developed to grade ankle function clinically. The data on gait analysis were examined to determine the effect of arthrodesis of the ankle on the over-all pattern of walking. Under conditions of normal daily living while wearing shoes, all patients functioned well after arthrodesis. The gait-analysis data obtained with the patients wearing shoes showed …

Footwear in the United States Army Band: injury incidence and risk factors associated with foot pain.

BACKGROUND: Footwear characteristics can influence, fatigue, comfort, injuries and energy cost. Members of the United States Army Band have hundreds of performances a year and these performances often include prolonged standing and marching in footwear. OBJECTIVE: The purposes of this paper are to: (1) determine injury rates before and after wearing a shoe with presumed greater cushioning and ventilation among US Army Band members, and (2) identify risk factors associated with foot pain/discomfort. METHODS: To potentially reduce injuries and improve comfort, 112 band members received shoes w…

Influence of Trail Running Footwear Foam on Running Economy and Perceptual Metrics.

Advanced footwear technologies (AFT) improve road running performance. AFT have been incorporated into trail running footwear despite little evidence of their benefits in this context. In this study, we compared the effect of traditional (TRADI-f) and AFT foam (AFT-f) on running economy and perceptual measures across different gradients. Fourteen well-trained athletes completed assessments on a treadmill at gradients of FLAT (0% gradient, 14 km.h-1), UP (+10%, 8 km.h-1) and DOWN (-10%, 14 km.h-1). Two shoes were randomly allocated in a counterbalanced order. The shoes were matched in construct…

Effects of worn and new footwear on plantar pressure in people with gout.

BACKGROUND: In clinical trials, good quality athletic shoes offer short-term improvements (two-months) in foot pain and disability in people with gout, but these improvements are not sustained over time. This may be due to wear and subsequent changes to the structural integrity of the shoe. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of wear on plantar pressures and footwear characteristics in shoes over six-months in people with gout. METHODS: Forty people with gout participated in a cross-sectional repeated measures study. Participants wore a pair of commercially available athletic foo…
