Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is a condition featured by stiffness and pain in shoulder joint. In this report, we present a case of 58 years old diabetic male patient with the history of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) 06 months back. He presented with persistent right shoulder pain for 05 months. Clinical examinations reveal restriction of the right shoulder joint movement in all directions and wasting of the right supraspinatus, infraspinatus and trapezius muscles. Both active and passive range of motions was restricted with painful right shoulder joint. Pain fre…

Imaging evaluation of shoulder disorders should begin with radiographs. Several radiographic projections have been developed to best show areas affected by particular clinical disorders. This paper reviews the radiographic examinations that are used at our hospital for evaluating arthritis, impingement, trauma and instability. The techniques used to obtain each of these radiographs are briefly described to better understand the resulting images. An organized approach to assessment of these radiographs is delineated including evaluation of the ABCs (alignment, bone density, cartilage spaces and

The shoulder joint has an important influence on arm- and hand function. Therefore, activities of daily living, working and leisure time can be negatively influenced by diseases of the shoulder joint. Problems of the shoulder joint can be induced by muscular dysbalance and poor body posture. There is a strong relationship between shoulder function and body posture. Conservative treatment and rehabilitation of the shoulder joint aims at improving the local dysfunction of the shoulder joint as well as at improving function and social participation. Antiinflammatory and pain medication, exercise,…

The shoulder joint is a complex structure composed of intricate bony architecture and an ornate system of muscles, tendons, and ligaments. What many refer to as the "shoulder joint" is actually a combination of 4 articulations--the glenohumeral joint, acromioclavicular joint, sternoclavicular joint, and the scapulothoracic articulation. These structures work together to provide the shoulder complex with multiple degrees of freedom, which allow the upper extremity to be abducted, adducted, rotated, flexed, and extended. Although this flexibility is vital for positioning the arm in space, it can…

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a prevalent metabolic disorder with systemic implications, potentially affecting musculoskeletal health. This study aimed to assess shoulder muscle strength and joint repositioning accuracy in individuals with T2DM, exploring potential correlations and shedding light on the musculoskeletal consequences of the condition. The objectives were two-fold: (1) to assess and compare shoulder strength and joint repositioning accuracy between individuals with T2DM and asymptomatic counterparts, and (2) to examine the correlation between shoulder strength an

The shoulder, being the most mobile joint in the human body, is often susceptible to dislocations and subluxations more so than other joints. As such, shoulder instability constitutes a common complaint among patients worldwide, especially those who are young, participate in contact sports, and have increased innate flexibility in their joints. Management options in the setting of instability vary between conservative and surgical options that aim to mitigate symptoms and allow return of function. Surgical options can be arthroscopic and open, with a general shift among surgeons towards utiliz

Radiologic knowledge of different fracture patterns involving the shoulder girdle is an important tool to generate clinically relevant reports, identify concomitant injuries, guide management decisions, and predict and minimize complications, such as nonunion, osteoarthritis, osteonecrosis, and hardware failure. Complex unstable injuries like scapulothoracic dissociation can also occur because of shoulder girdle trauma. Management options may vary from conservative to surgical, depending on the fracture type and patient factors. Injuries around the shoulder girdle can involve the glenohumeral

BACKGROUND: Advances in the understanding and management of glenoid bone loss in shoulder instability have led to the development of alternative bony reconstruction techniques to the Latarjet using free bone grafts, but little is known about surgeon adoption of these procedures. This study sought to characterize surgeon variation in the use of glenoid bone reconstruction procedures for shoulder instability and ascertain reasons underlying procedure choice.
METHODS: A 9-question survey was created and distributed to 160 shoulder surgeons members of the PacWest Shoulder and Elbow Society, of wh

Bony lesions are highly prevalent in anterior shoulder instability and can be a significant cause of failure of stabilisation procedures if they are not adequately addressed. The glenoid track concept describes the dynamic interaction between the humeral head and glenoid defects in anterior shoulder instability. It has been beneficial for understanding the role played by bone defects in this entity. As a consequence, the popularity of glenoid augmentation procedures aimed to treat anterior glenoid bone defects; reconstructing the anatomy of the glenohumeral joint has risen sharply in the last

BACKGROUND: A knowledge of the anthropometric characteristics of the coracoid graft (CG) that can be obtained by the open and arthroscopic Latarjet techniques may be beneficial in the preoperative planning and intraoperative decision making for coracoid osteotomy and transfer. We have not found any study that compared the morphology of the CG that can be obtained from open and arthroscopic Latarjet techniques. The purpose of this study was to verify if the basic anthropometric characteristics of CGs are equivalent.

BACKGROUND: Free bone block (FBB) procedures for anterior shoulder instability have been proposed as an alternative to or bail-out for the Latarjet procedure. However, studies comparing the outcomes of these treatment modalities are limited.
PURPOSE: To systematically review and perform a meta-analysis comparing the clinical outcomes of patients undergoing anterior shoulder stabilization with a Latarjet or FBB procedure.
STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review and meta-analysis; Level of evidence, 4.
METHODS: PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library databases were systematically searched from incep

PURPOSE: This work compares the biomechanical resistance of five modes of fixation coracoid bone-block fixation during Latarjet open-air or arthroscopic procedures. The hypothesis is that these systems are equivalent.
METHODS: Latarjet procedures were performed on cadavers, then the samples were subjected to an increasing tension until the fixation failed. Five systems were tested: two malleolar screws, one screw with washer, two 3.5-mm self-compressive screws, one 4-mm self-compressive screw associated with one 3-mm self-compressive screw, and endobutton. The main judgment criterion was the

Joint instability is one of the most common human afflictions, affecting not only the hip, knee, and shoulder but all joints of the body. Surgical repair for joint instability is done commonly, yet has not been able to restore function consistently. Pain, recurrence of instability, joint stiffness, muscle injury, and degenerative joint disease are all too common sequelae. Because the glenohumeral joint is most commonly dislocated, efforts have been directed to understanding shoulder instability. Study has included not only the static restraints (capsulolabrum, articular surfaces, intracapsular

Shoulder instability can occur in any direction and presents across a broad spectrum including traumatic dislocations, repetitive microinstability events or subluxations, and global joint laxity. The development of pain, functional decline, and articular pathologic condition is a multifaceted process that is influenced by the underlying bony morphology, biology of the surrounding soft tissue structures, dynamic coordination of the periscapular musculature, and patient factors such as age, activity level, and associated injuries. This article will focus on the younger, active patient with insta

Humeral head retroversion and shoulder rotation in both the frontal and scapular plane were studied in 34 patients with anterior glenohumera … ompared with 33 degrees and 29 degrees, respectively, in normal shoulders. The stable contralateral shoulder joint was clinically and roentgenographically similar to the normal shoulder. The patients with nontraumatic dislocations had increased rotation and smaller retroversion angles, irrespective of stability in the shoulder joint. The retroversion angles were …

A middle-aged woman presented to our hospital with a chief complaint of a mass on the left shoulder for 1 year. The initial lump was small with no pain or tenderness, and the patient had not sought medical attention for numbness in the left shoulder. Clinical examination showed a mass on the left shoulder measuring 11 × 8 × 3 cm approximately with no apparent skin damage or ecchymosis. No limitations in left shoulder joint movements were observed, and the patient exhibited normal movement of the left elbow joint, wrist joint, and metacarpophalangeal joint. Moreover, the left radial artery was …

Most commonly, shoulder instability results from a traumatic dislocation of the shoulder joint, usually happening to men under the age of 30. The first uncomplicated dislocation is treated conservatively. Instability refers to symptomatic instability of the shoulder joint, i.e. recurrent dislocations or fear of dislocation. Clinical examination and X-ray are usually sufficient for diagnosis. While mechanical instability of the shoulder joint is an indication for surgery, the operative technique should be selected in a patient-specific manner.
