Combined Hurler and Sanfilippo syndrome in a sibling pair.

The mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are lysosomal storage disorders caused by defects in the enzymes involved in the degradation of glycosaminoglycans. Hurler syndrome (MPS I) and Sanfilippo syndrome (MPS III) are among the more common diseases in the group, each occurring with an incidence of approximately 1 in 100,000. We present a case of siblings, born of a consanguineous union, affected with both MPS I and MPS IIIa. The diagnoses were confirmed with fibroblast enzyme assays and sequence analysis of the genes, which identified homozygous mutations in IDUA and SGSH. We discuss their clinical fe…

The heritability and sibling risk of angle closure in Asians.

PURPOSE: To describe the heritability and sibling risk for angle closure. DESIGN: Prospective clinical study. PARTICIPANTS: Probands with … d the phenotypic variance being 3.91. Of the 515 sibling pairs examined, 171 (33.1%) pairs had both siblings unaffected, 113 (21.9%) pairs had both siblings affected, 231 (45.0%) pairs had 1 sibling affected. The sibling recurrence risk for having narrow angles was 49% (95% confidence interval, 41.6%-56.8%), whereas the sibling relative risk for narrow ang …

A push or a punch: distinguishing the severity of sibling violence.

Sibling violence is the most prevalent and least studied form of family violence, and little research has examined differences based on severity. This research examines more severe versus less severe forms of sibling violence. Using a subsample of married couples with two or more children ages 0 to 17 drawn from the 1976 National Survey of Physical Violence in American Families, the authors employ Conflict Tactics Scale items for child-to-child conflict to construct a measure of sibling violence severity. Drawing from several theoretical perspectives on family violence and peer aggression, the

Intestinal atresia and agenesis of the gallbladder in 2 siblings.

Intestinal atresia and gallbladder agenesis are rare congenital malformations usually presenting as isolated and sporadic. We present and discuss the case of 2 sisters affected by a previously unreported association of these 2 anomalies.

[Contribution of unvaccinated siblings to a measles outbreak in Switzerland].

BACKGROUND: A measles outbreak occurred in Geneva between March and July 2003. An investigation was conducted to determine its magnitude, identify predominant modes of transmission, and assess disease outcome. METHODS: In Switzerland, measles notification has been mandatory for physicians since 1999 and laboratories since 1988. All cases were investigated and followed up by interviewing physicians using a standardized questionnaire. Viral genotype was determined for 4 cases using a saliva specimen processed at the Robert Koch Institute, Berlin. Geographic distribution of cases and vaccination

Renal parenchymal damage in sibling vesicoureteric reflux.

AIM: To compare the incidence of renal damage in siblings of patients with vesicoureteric reflux (VUR) who presented with a documented history of urinary tract infection (UTI) with asymptomatic siblings who were diagnosed with reflux during a screening programme for hereditary VUR. METHODS: Medical and radiological records of the VUR patients (1990-2000) were examined for age, gender, mode of presentation, reflux grade and renal damage. RESULTS: VUR was noted in 226 siblings (352 ureters) in 107 families. Of the 119 siblings of index patients, 64 were investigated for a documented UTI and 55…

Sibling relationships of anxious children: a preliminary investigation.

Examined the sibling relationships of anxious children and nonclinic controls using both self-report and observational coding. Thirty-six clinically anxious and 15 control sibling pairs completed the Sibling Relationship Questionnaire (SRQ) and participated in two 5-min sibling discussion tasks. Discriminant analyses were used to predict group membership using the SRQ factor scores of Warmth/Closeness, Conflict and Status/Power, and the coded dimensions of Warmth, Hostility, Control of Sibling, and Task Maintenance. Compared to control children, the sibling interactions of anxious children wer

[Sibling cases of nephritis resembling membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis].

We have experienced rare cases of membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN)-like nephritis, which was seen in siblings. Both the brothers had asymptomatic hematuria and proteinuria at an age before 10, 7 and 4 years old, respectively. Renal biopsy revealed proliferative glomerulonephritis, resembling MPGN type III. The family history showed that their father and grandfather suffered from end-stage renal disease, suggesting that MPGN seen in the present sibling cases is hereditary. A review of the literature revealed that familial MPGN is rare, that most of the cases have urinary abnormal…

Primary failure of eruption in the permanent dentition of siblings.

Primary failure of eruption is a condition where there is eruption failure in the permanent dentition with no obvious mechanical cause. It has previously been reported in the literature as a cause of posterior openbite, with a varying degree of familial inheritance. This case report describes two sisters that experienced eruption failure in the permanent dentition, most notably of the first and second molars, with greater severity in the younger sister. Teeth were exposed in both patients and orthodontic traction was applied with little or no success. The report provides further evidence of th

A longitudinal study of siblings of children with chronic disabilities.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the unaffected siblings of 2 different groups with chronic disabilities, pervasive developmental disorder (PDD) and Down syndrome (DS), over 3 years, comparing their adjustment with each other and with the siblings of a nondisabled group. METHOD: This study examines 137 siblings of children with PDD, children with DS, and developmentally normal children (control group) initially and 127 siblings at follow-up 3 years later. Their adjustment is measured by the Survey Diagnostic Instrument (SDI), completed by caregivers and teachers. Predictor variables include sibling self…

Sibling orders of schizophrenic patients in Austria and Pakistan.

The influence of siblings on the socialization of the individual has been recognized as a fact by both psychology and sociology. The significance of sibling order for the outbreak of psychiatric diseases on the other hand is still discussed controversially. In our study, we compared the expected values and the positions actually found in the sibling order of 379 (233 males, 146 females) Austrian and 144 (101 males, 43 females) Pakistani patients diagnosed with schizophrenia according to DSM-IV (295). The position in the sibling order had no influence on the outbreak of schizophrenia in Austria…

Sibling relationships in families with congenitally impaired children.

Sibling relationships between school-aged children and their chronically impaired siblings have been studied infrequently. In this exploratory, descriptive study, 67 children (7 to 12 years old) and their mothers provided data about well-impaired sibling relationships. Three groups participated: 22 siblings and mothers of children with craniofacial anomalies, 20 siblings and mothers of children with cardiac anomalies, and 25 siblings and mothers of healthy children. Data were collected using the Sibling Inventory of Behavior and semistructured sibling and maternal interview guides. Quantitativ…

The association of imperforate anus and Hirschsprung's disease in siblings.

The recognition of Hirschsprung's disease is often delayed in children with imperforate anus. Two siblings with imperforate anus who were born of consanguineous parents had persistent constipation after the repair of the anorectal malformation. Subsequently colon biopsy confirmed that each had long segment aganglionosis beginning at the splenic flexure. A suspicion that these two disorders may coexist is mandatory for early correct diagnosis.

[Sibling case of osteosclerosis with cranial nerve symptoms].

We experienced two cases of "Osteosclerosis" who were 12 and 15 year old sisters. Previous reported cases of this disease are 50 cases and among them only one patient was reported in Japan. Osteosclerosis seems to be inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. Parental consanguinity is also observed. The peculiar facies are evident in infancy, characterized by broad, flat nasal bridge, ocular hypertelorism and prognathic, broadened mandible. Commonly, they have cutaneous syndactylies in bilateral hands and feet, especially between the second and third finger and toe. Roentgenographically, hyper
