Piezosurgery is a new and modern technique of bone surgery in implantology. Selective cutting is possible for different ultrasonic frequencies acting only in hard tissues (mineralized), saving vital anatomical structures. With the piezoelectric osteotomy technique, receptor site preparation for implants, autogenous bone graft acquistition (particles and blocks), osteotomy for alveolar bone crest expansion, maxillary sinus lifting, and dental implant removal can be performed accurately and safely, providing excellent clinical and biological results, especially for osteocyte viability. The aim o

This study reports the incidence of complications and sinus membrane perforations when using sonic instruments to prepare the lateral window osteotomy for maxillary sinus augmentation. The charts of 33 consecutive patients (40 sinuses) were reviewed. Sinus membrane perforations were reported in 7 cases (17.5% of procedures), with 3 perforations occurring during preparation of the osteotomy window (7.5% of procedures). Postoperatively, 2 cases of sinus infection (5%) and 2 cases of flap dehiscence (5%) were recorded. This study demonstrates that elevation of the sinus floor with a combination o

BACKGROUND: The presence of localized defects and/or small amounts of bone below the maxillary sinus is a common finding, which may compromise implant placement. There is therefore a need for predictable techniques for bone augmentation in such situations.
PURPOSE: The study aims to clinically and histologically evaluate a porcine bone (PB) substitute used for augmentation of the alveolar crest or the maxillary sinus floor prior to or in conjunction with implant placement.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nineteen patients were treated with a porcine bone substitute and barrier membranes (OsteoBiol, T

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to use a deep learning (DL) approach for the automatic identification of the ridge deficiency around dental implants based on an image slice from cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Single slices crossing the central long-axis of 630 mandibular and 845 maxillary virtually placed implants (4-5 mm diameter, 10 mm length) in 412 patients were used. The ridges were classified based on the intraoral bone-implant support and sinus floor location. The slices were either preprocessed by alveolar ridge homogenizing prior to DL (preprocessed) or

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of evidence regarding success of implants placed in atrophic premaxilla using the nasal floor elevation technique.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare implants placed in augmented bone in the anterior maxilla using the nasal floor elevation technique with implants placed in the maxillary sinus region using the sinus lift technique.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A within-patient controlled clinical trial was performed on 14 patients receiving 78 implants. The implants were assigned to one of two study groups on the basis of implant location. A total of 37 implants were p

BACKGROUND: Survival rates of implants placed in transalveolar sinus floor augmentation sites are comparable with those placed in non-augmented sites. Flapless implant surgery can minimize postoperative morbidity, alveolar bone resorption and crestal bone loss. The use of cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT) provides 3D presentations with reduced dose exposure.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate a flapless, CBCT-guided transalveolar sinus floor elevation technique with simultaneous implant installation.

Advanced atrophy of the partially edentulous maxilla necessitates bone augmentation as a prerequisite for successful implant osseointegration. This case shows that sinus grafting at the left first molar (free-end gap) by means of particulated mineralized solvent-preserved cancellous bone and sealing of the recipient site with a bioabsorbable xenogenic collagenous membrane provides optimum conditions for a staged implant placement. Four months after sinus membrane elevation, a trephine biopsy was recovered from the augmented floor and a microtextured implant placed into the augmented area. The

Transcrestal sinus floor elevation (tSFE) is a useful method for vertical bone augmentation in the posterior maxilla at the time of implant placement. However, this is a blind surgical technique with a risk of perforating the Schneiderian membrane. In this article, we present a simple technique to perform tSFEs using ridge spreaders. With this technique, the tSFE is performed in a slow and controlled manner without the entry of instruments into the maxillary sinus. Furthermore, many clinicians may find they already have the necessary surgical tools within their armamentarium. This precludes th

The objective of this study was to perform a comparative evaluation of the radiographic outcomes of lateral sinus floor elevation with and without bone window repositioning (BLSFE and LSFE, respectively) when applied concomitantly with implant placement. A randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted between February 1, 2016 and May 1, 2017 including 26 individuals with at least one missing tooth. Participants were randomized 1:1 to undergo BLSFE (10 participants, 16 implants) or LSFE (13 participants, 19 implants). Bovine-derived xenograft was used in both groups and the implants were i

BACKGROUND: Silent sinus or imploding antrum syndrome is a very rare condition, consisting of a usually asymptomatic spontaneous collapse of the sinus walls and floor of the orbit. It is associated with negative pressures, and when this occurs, it presents with manifestations such as enophthalmos, hypoglobus, and tilt flow orbital floor. As its incidence is very low, it is frequently missed as a diagnosis, and in fact there are currently fewer than 150 cases reported in the literature.

BACKGROUND: Maxillary sinus (MS) floor elevation using the lateral window approach is a predictable technique for bone augmentation in the posterior maxilla. However, injury to the posterior superior alveolar artery (PSAA) during osteotomy can result in significant intraoperative bleeding and compromise surgical visibility. This study aimed to evaluate the presence, anatomical location, and vertical distance of the PSAA using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and to analyze its relationship with the vertical position of the simulated lateral window relative to the sinus floor, relevant to s

BACKGROUND: Sinonasal inverted papilloma is a locally aggressive tumor arising from the Schneiderian membrane which lines the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. Aggressive surgical approaches, such as lateral rhinotomy, were used until recently for complete removal of the inverted papilloma. Currently, endoscopic resection is the gold standard in the treatment of inverted papilloma. However, there are situations that justify an open approach. For example there are studies that report a higher postoperative recurrence rate after endonasal endoscopic resection, particularly in the treatment of
