Association of skin color, race/ethnicity, and hearing loss among adults in the USA.

Epidemiologic studies of hearing loss in adults have demonstrated that the odds of hearing loss are substantially lower in black than in white individuals. The basis of this association is unknown. We hypothesized that skin pigmentation as a marker of melanocytic functioning mediates this observed association and that skin pigmentation is associated with hearing loss independent of race/ethnicity. We analyzed cross-sectional data from 1,258 adults (20-59 years) in the 2003-2004 cycle of the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey who had assessment of Fitzpatrick skin type and pure-…

All demonstrated a … demonstrate the clonal origin of melanoblasts from neural crest precursors. Patients with anomalous skin pigmentation, particularly when it follows a pattern of Blaschko lines, should be appropriately evaluated for a possible association with chromosomal or genetic mosaicism or chimerism.

Pathogenesis of generalized melanosis with melanuria and melanoptysis secondary to malignant melanoma.

A case of disseminated malignant melanoma with generalized melanosis of the skin and other tissues, melanuria, melanoptysis, and a dark brown blood serum is reported. The reticuloendothelial system contained large amounts of melanin pigment. Lysis of degenerating pigment-loaded melanoma cells in peripheral blood vessels seemed to be of considerable importance in the pigmentation of tissues. Focal pigmentation of capillary endothelium and perivascular deposition of melanin pigment in macrophages and, occasionally contained large amounts of melanin pigment. Lysis of degenerating pigment-loaded m

Distribution quantification on dermoscopy images for computer-assisted diagnosis of cutaneous melanomas.

Computerised analysis on skin lesion images has been reported to be helpful in achieving objective and reproducible diagnosis of melanoma. In particular, asymmetry in shape, colour and structure reflects the irregular growth of melanin under the skin and is of great importance for diagnosing the malignancy of skin lesions. This paper proposes a novel asymmetry analysis based on a newly developed pigmentation elevation model and the global point signatures (GPSs). Specifically, the pigmentation elevation model was first constructed by computer-based analysis of dermoscopy images, for the identi

The discovery of the human melanocyte.

Around 2200 bc the first written description of a human pigmentation disorder, most likely vitiligo, was recorded, and from that moment the history of research into human pigmentation can be traced. For the following 4000 yr, the origins of human skin colour remained an enigma that was to generate a multitude of misconceptions. Even after European physicians began to dissect and compare dark and light coloured skin to reveal its underlying anatomy, the origins of skin and hair pigmentation were a matter of frequently erroneous speculation. The true source of human pigmentation was only finally

Non-melanin pigmentation: A narrative review.

Skin colour is determined by four biochromes: oxyhaemoglobin (red), reduced haemoglobin (blue), carotenoids (yellow), and, most importantly, the amount and type of melanin produced and its distribution in the skin. Pigmentary disorders comprise hypopigmentary, hyperpigmentary, and non-melanin pigmentary diseases. While the former two are discussed frequently, non-melanin pigmentary conditions are not unusual. Based on the aetiology and colour of pigmentation, these disorders can be categorised into blue-coloured lesions, hypopigmented lesions due to vascular aetiology, yellow-coloured lesions

A New Therapeutic Approach With Rose Stem-Cell-Derived Exosomes and Non-Thermal Microneedling for the Treatment of Facial Pigmentation.

BACKGROUND: Facial dyspigmentation is a challenging concern which cannot easily be corrected. Although the application of topical exosomes has shown some efficacy, there is still scarce data addressing the role of plant-derived exosomes for skin hyperpigmentation. OBJECTIVES: This study using rose stem-cell-derived exosomes (RSCE) was performed as a proof-of-concept case series to evaluate the efficacy and safety of microneedling and topical RSCE, for the reduction of pigmentation and photoaging in adult volunteers. METHODS: Twelve female volunteers were recruited, with a mean age of 46.64 y

The Impact of Post-inflammatory Pigment Alteration After Psoriasis: Novel Data from the VISIBLE Study.

INTRODUCTION: Post-inflammatory pigment alteration (PIPA) in skin previously affected by psoriasis is an important, often neglected problem. PIPA has a disproportionate negative impact in people with skin of color. The phase 3b VISIBLE study evaluated guselkumab efficacy and safety in participants with skin of color and moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis (cohort A) or moderate-to-severe scalp psoriasis (cohort B). Here we report results from exploratory assessments of the quality-of-life impact of pigmentation changes as psoriasis lesions resolve and long-term skin clearance is achieved and o

Solar ultraviolet radiation induces biological alterations in human skin in vitro: relevance of a well-balanced UVA/UVB protection.

Cutaneous damages such as sunburn, pigmentation, and photoaging are known to be induced by acute as well as repetitive sun exposure. Not only for basic research, but also for the design of the most efficient photoprotection, it is crucial to understand and identify the early biological events occurring after ultraviolet (UV) exposure. Reconstructed human skin models provide excellent and reliable in vitro tools to study the UV-induced alterations of the different skin cell types, keratinocytes, fibroblasts, and melanocytes in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Using different in vitro human sk

Postinflammatory hyperpigmentation: A comprehensive overview: Epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, and noninvasive assessment technique.

Postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) commonly occurs after various endogenous and exogenous stimuli, especially in dark-skinned individuals. PIH is one of the most common complications of procedures performed using laser and other light sources. The severity of PIH is determined by the inherent skin color, degree and depth of inflammation, degree of dermoepidermal junction disruption, inflammatory conditions, and the stability of melanocytes, leading to epidermal and dermal melanin pigment deposition. The depth of melanin pigment is the key factor to predict prognosis and treatment outcome

The aetiology and treatment of varicose pigmentation.

The skin pigmentation of chronic venous insufficiency is associated both with increased melanin production and also with deposition of haemosiderin. Following treatment by compression sclerotherapy this pigmentation usually decreases. Seven patients with varicose pigmentation were assessed prior to treatment by colour photographs and skin biopsies. About one year after sclerotherapy further photographs and biopsies were taken. Six of the patients showed a definite decrease of pigmentation on the photographs. In all seven the amount of melanin had decreased. The results for haemosiderin were le…

Alterations of the pigmentation system in the aging process.

Human skin aging is a natural phenomenon that results from continuous exposure to intrinsic (time, genetic factors, hormones) as well as extrinsic factors (UV exposure, pollution, tobacco). In areas that are frequently exposed to the sun, photoaging blends with the process of intrinsic aging, resulting in an increased senescent cells number and consequently accelerating the aging process. The severity of photodamage depends on constitutional factors, including skin phototype (skin color, tanning capacity), intensity, and duration of sunlight/UV exposure. Aging affects nearly every aspect of cu

Case studies of two related Chinese patients with Carney complex presenting with extensive cardiac myxomas and PRKAR1A gene mutation of c.491_492delTG.

Carney complex is an autosomal dominant disease that is clinically characterized by cardiac myxomas, spotty skin pigmentation, and endocrine overactivity. Carney complex is most commonly caused by mutations in the PRKAR1A gene on chromosome 17q22-24. Currently, there are at least 117 pathogenic mutations in PRKAR1A that have been identified. Herein, we report on two cases of Carney complex in related Chinese patients with a c.491_492delTG mutation that presented with multiple and extensive cardiac myxomas and skin pigmentation.

Identification of optimal control compartments for serial near-infrared spectroscopy assessment of lower extremity compartmental perfusion.

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has shown promise in detecting ischemic changes in acute compartment syndrome. The objectives of this study were to 1) assess the correlation in NIRS values between upper and lower extremity control sites for bilateral lower extremity trauma and 2) investigate the effect of skin pigmentation on NIRS values. Forty-four volunteers (14 male, 30 female) were monitored over separate 1-hour sessions. NIRS leads were placed over leg and upper extremity compartments. Colorimeters were used to document skin pigmentation. NIRS values between corresponding contralateral …

Beyond Tint: Active Ingredient Strategies for Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation due to Visible Light in Skin of Color.

BACKGROUND: Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is among the most burdensome sequelae of inflammatory dermatoses in skin of color (SOC), and reduction of visible pigmentation represents the primary clinical outcome of interest. Tinted sunscreens containing iron oxides and/or pigmentary titanium dioxide are currently the best-evidenced strategy for preventing visible light-driven PIH in SOC. However, cosmetic unacceptability-including white cast, poor shade match, and texture incompatibility with acne-prone skin-significantly limits real-world adherence. This concept paper proposes a clin

An Update on Drug-Induced Pigmentation.

Drug-induced pigmentation accounts for up to 20% of all cases of acquired pigmentation. A thorough review of medical history and previous and ongoing medications as well as a complete skin examination can guide diagnosis. Implicated agents include alkylating/cytotoxic agents, analgesics, antiarrhythmics, anticoagulants, antiepileptics, antimalarials, antimicrobials, antiretrovirals, metals, prostaglandin analogs, and psychotropic agents, among others. Confirming true drug associations can be challenging, especially in the setting of delayed onset of pigmentation and coexisting polypharmacy.
