Efficacy of a Saffron-Based (Crocus sativus L.) Herbal Supplement on Sleep Disturbances in Pulmonary Sarcoidosis: A Randomized Single-Blind Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbances in pulmonary sarcoidosis increase fatigue and reduce quality of life; however, standard anti-inflammatory treatments provide limited benefit. Saffron (Crocus sativus L., family Iridaceae), which has anti-inflammatory and neuromodulatory properties, may improve sleep, although its effects in this population have not been studied. OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated whether 60 days of saffron supplementation (30 mg twice daily) improves sleep quality, reduces daytime sleepiness and fatigue, and enhances quality of life in patients with pulmonary sarcoidosis. METHODS

Quality of Life and Mental Well-Being: A Gendered Analysis of Persons Experiencing Homelessness in Canada.

Homelessness has negative implications for mental well-being and quality of life. This paper identifies the quality of life variables that contribute to positive or negative wellbeing, reporting on a regression analysis from 343 individuals experiencing homelessness in Canada. Results indicate that a lack of sleep duration and quality reduced mental well-being for both genders, not having access to food and/or hygiene facilities decreased men's well-being, and engaging in illegal subsistence strategies, such as selling drugs, negatively impacted women's mental well-being. For persons experienc

A mouse zoonotic virus (LCMV): A possible candidate in the causation of SIDS.

Lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) is a ubiquitous virus carried by rodents. It causes human disease through contact with infectious mouse faeces, urine or secretions. The virus initially infects the human respiratory tract and lungs and produces typical viral symptoms and signs. The infection is usually self-limiting and recovery is the norm. A small proportion of individuals may develop aseptic meningitis. It is hypothesised that in infancy the virus may cause respiratory tract infection through contact with mouse excreta. The infection could activate production of staphylococcal ente

Sleep Patterns of Premedical Undergraduate Students: Pilot Study and Protocol Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Poor sleep hygiene persists in college students today, despite its heavy implications on adolescent development and academic performance. Although sleep patterns in undergraduates have been broadly investigated, no study has exclusively assessed the sleep patterns of premedical undergraduate students. A gap also exists in the knowledge of how students perceive their sleep patterns compared to their actual sleep patterns. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to address 2 research questions: What are the sleep patterns of premedical undergraduate students? Would the proposed study protocol be…

Mothers' hygiene experiences in confinement centres: A cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Ethnic Malaysian Chinese used to observe the 1-month postpartum confinement period at home and many families would engage a traditional postpartum carer to help care for the mother and newborn. A recent trend has been the development of confinement centres (CCs) which are private non-healthcare establishments run by staff not trained in health care. Concerns about hygiene in CCs arose after infections were reported. We describe the practice of hand hygiene observed in CCs, the availability of resources for hygiene, and the prevalence of health-related problems in CCs. METHODS: T

Phantom Vibration Syndrome and Problematic Smartphone Use Among University Students: Associations With Sleep Disturbance, Mental Health, and Academic Stress.

BACKGROUND: In a world where the mind vibrates even when the phone does not, digital habits are quietly reshaping how we rest, focus, and fe … al and physical well-being. By treating digital balance as an essential health behavior, similar to sleep hygiene or nutrition, universities can help protect students from the psychological fatigue of always being online. Addressing PVS and PSU through awareness and behavioral interventions should be considered a public health priority for the digital age.

[Circadian clock and non-visual functions: the role of light in humans].

Hormonal secretion, cognitive performance, motor activity, metabolic processes, the sleep wake cycle and, most recently shown, cell division and ADN repair show a 24 h rhythmicity that is driven by the circadian timing system (the biological clock). Their appropriate activity over the 24 h requires appropriate entrainment of the circadian clock, which is achieved through the synchronizing effects of ocular light exposure. The activation of melanopsin-expressing ganglion cells in the retina depends on timing, quality, intensity, and history of light exposure. Inappropriate lighting leads to ina
