[Impact of intervention on tobacco related knowledge, attitudes and practice of smokers].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of intervention on tobacco related knowledge, attitudes and practice of smokers. METHODS: An observational study was conducted among the smokers seeking counsel at smoking cessation clinic in our hospital from October 2008 to August 2013. First, a face to face counsel and mental intervention for more than 30 minutes was given to smoker, then 4 interventions through telephone call for 15-20 minutes for each time were conducted 1 week later, 1 month later, 3 months later and 6 months later, respectively. The controls were smokers receiving health examination in…

A Screening Study to Determine the Prevalence of Airway Disease in Heroin Smokers.

Over the last 20 years smoking has become the most common method of heroin use and increasing numbers of heroin smokers are presenting to local medical services, before the age of 40 years, with severe airway disease. To determine COPD prevalence we recruited 129 subjects from two local community drug services, of whom 107 were heroin smokers. We collected demographic, medical and treatment data, smoking history (including cannabis and opiates) and details of symptoms including MRC dyspnoea. Subjects completed the COPD Assessment Tool and spirometry. Thirty heroin smokers were identified as ha…

The Perception of Female Smokers with Fibromyalgia on the Effects of Smoking on Fibromyalgia Symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Smokers with fibromyalgia have greater pain intensity and function impairment compared to nonsmokers. Patients' perceptions of interactions between smoking and fibromyalgia symptoms have not been described. The primary aim of this study was to report the perceptions of female smokers with fibromyalgia on how smoking affects symptoms. METHODS: Forty-eight daily smokers with fibromyalgia enrolled in the Mayo Clinic Fibromyalgia Treatment Center completed the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire, Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, General Anxiety Dis…

The N2 ERP component as an index of impaired cognitive control in smokers.

Impaired cognitive control has been proposed as a hallmark of nicotine dependence and is thought to arise, in part, from synaptic alterations in anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), a primary component of the dopamine reward pathway. The N2 component of the event-related potential (ERP) appears to index a cognitive control process in paradigms such as the visual go/no-go task. Moreover, as dipole-modeling has suggested that the neural generator of the N2 component can be localized to the ACC, this component may prove useful for investigating impairments of cognitive control in smokers. Given confl…

[Sociodemographic profile of smokers admitted to the psychiatric ward of a general hospital].

From the interest of health professionals in tobacco control, stood out its high frequency in psychiatric population. This paper aimed to identify the socio-demographic profile of psychiatric patients who are also smokers, comparing with former smokers and non smokers. Exploratory survey, conducted from August 2010 to February 2012, involving psychiatric patients hospitalized in a general hospital, through interviews using a structured questionnaire. Out of the 433 persons hospitalized, 270 took part of this study; 83.7% are carriers of severe mental disorders; 35.6% are smokers, 14.1% former …

Dissecting the genetics of chronic mucus hypersecretion in smokers with and without COPD.

Smoking is a notorious risk factor for chronic mucus hypersecretion (CMH). CMH frequently occurs in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The question arises whether the same single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are related to CMH in smokers with and without COPD. We performed two genome-wide association studies of CMH under an additive genetic model in male heavy smokers (≥20 pack-years) with COPD (n=849, 39.9% CMH) and without COPD (n=1348, 25.4% CMH), followed by replication and meta-analysis in comparable populations, and assessment of the functional relevance of significantly as…

Synergistic effect of radon in blood cells of smokers - an in vitro study.

Epidemiological studies indicate that the risk of lung cancer among smokers increases with exposure to residential radon. The present study aimed to investigate the synergetic effect between smoking and radon. Blood samples from smokers and non-smokers were exposed to different concentrations of radon ranging from 0 to 189MBq/m(3) corresponding to doses ranging from 0.2 to 15.2mGy. Chromosome aberrations in first division metaphase preparations were scored. The frequency of dicentrics in radon-exposed smoker cells was found to be higher than non-smokers by factor of 3.8. The present study is t…

Factors in nonadherence to quitline services: smoker characteristics explain little.

BACKGROUND: Quitlines offer evidence-based, multisession coaching support for smoking cessation in the 50 U.S. states, Canada, and several other countries. Smokers who enroll in quitline services have, ipso facto, shown readiness to attempt to quit, but noncompletion of coaching services appears widespread and has not been widely investigated. The current study explored the magnitude and correlates of quitline service abandonment. METHOD: A state's quitline intake, coaching, and nicotine patch/gum utilization data were obtained for smokers who enrolled during the period July 2007 to June 2008…

Effect of stress and bupropion on craving, withdrawal symptoms, and mood in smokers.

INTRODUCTION: Studies suggest that in smokers attempting to quit smoking, the occurrence of stressful events is associated with smoking relapse. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of bupropion (an agent known to increase smoking cessation rates) on the craving, withdrawal, and mood response to stressful tasks administered in a laboratory setting. METHODS: Response to three tasks (a speech, math, and cold pressor task) was measured in 65 smokers during ad libitum smoking. Smokers were then randomized to either bupropion or placebo. Fourteen days after starting medication, 43…

A pilot clinical trial of varenicline for smoking cessation in black smokers.

INTRODUCTION: Varenicline, a first-line non-nicotine medication, has not been evaluated in Black smokers, and limited attention has been paid to pharmacotherapy adherence in smoking cessation trials. This pilot study estimated quit rates for Black smokers treated with varenicline and tested a behavioral intervention to aid varenicline adherence. METHODS: Seventy-two Black smokers (>10 cigarettes per day; cpd) were randomly assigned to adherence support (AS; n = 36) or standard care (n = 36). All participants received 3 months of varenicline and a single counseling session focused on making a …

A review of smoking cessation interventions for smokers aged 50 and older.

OBJECTIVES: Cigarette smoking poses substantial health risks at any age, but is particularly dangerous for older smokers, who are already at heightened risk for various health conditions. Studies suggest that older smokers are motivated to quit and succeed, but few of these have been randomized controlled trials. There is a need to systematically evaluate the research on effective interventions in older smokers. METHODS: We followed PRISMA guidelines in the development of this systematic review, which included randomized controlled trials of cessation interventions with smokers aged 50 or old…

Salivary osteocalcin levels are decreased in smoker chronic periodontitis patients.

OBJECTIVES: This study was planned to investigate whether smoker chronic periodontitis patients exhibit different salivary concentrations of C-telopeptide pyridinoline cross-links of type I collagen (ICTP) and osteocalcin (OC) compared to the non-smoker counterparts. METHODS: Whole saliva samples, full-mouth clinical periodontal recordings were obtained from 33 otherwise healthy chronic periodontitis patients and 36 systemically, periodontally healthy control subjects. Chronic periodontitis patients and healthy control subjects were divided into smoker and non-smoker groups according to their

Carbamazepine but not valproate induces CYP2A6 activity in smokers with mental illness.

BACKGROUND: Antiepileptic drugs (AED) are being increasingly used in the management of serious mental illness, but their effects on nicotine metabolism have not been studied. METHODS: This study investigated the effects of three AEDs (carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, and valproic acid) on nicotine and nicotine metabolite levels in 149 smokers with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder who participated in an afternoon blood draw for nicotine, cotinine, and 3'-hydroxycotinine (3HC). The ratio of 3HC to cotinine was calculated as a marker of CYP2A6 metabolic activity. Among the participants, 8 smokers…

The relationship of home smoking bans to the physical and mental health of smokers.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study is to examine whether the adoption of home smoking bans is associated with the physical and mental health of smokers. Two potential pathways that link home smoking bans to smoker's health are analyzed. The first argues that home smoking bans are positively related to physical health by encouraging smoking cessation while reducing daily cigarette consumption. The second suggests that home smoking bans have a negative relationship to smokers' mental health by increasing marginalization and social isolation. METHODS: Data on 28,887 Canadian smokers were analyz…

Cryptogenic haemoptysis in smokers: angiography and results of embolisation in 35 patients.

The aim of the present study was to describe angiographic findings and embolisation results in smokers with haemoptysis. We retrospectively reviewed the clinical data and angiographic findings from 35 patients with smoking-related bronchopulmonary disease and no associated comorbidity, who were referred for embolisation for mild (n = 6), moderate (n = 14) and severe (n = 15) haemoptysis. Spirometric classification subdivided our population into: 16 patients with chronic bronchitis but no airflow limitation; and 19 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (stage I: n = 12; sta…

Cardiovascular stress hyperreactivity in babies of smokers and in babies born preterm.

BACKGROUND: Being born preterm, small, and to a mother who smokes are common perinatal complications with major public health implications. Evidence suggests that each affects the body's structure and function in ways that could increase susceptibility to cardiovascular dysfunction later in life. Here, we used 2 routine stress reactivity tests to identify incipient "silent" programming of cardiovascular dysfunction associated with adverse perinatal events. METHODS AND RESULTS: We studied 29 control babies born at term to nonsmokers, 18 term-born babies of mothers who smoked throughout pregnan…
