Preterm birth (PTB), the leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality, urgently requires novel therapeutic agents. Metabolic pathways in vascular smooth muscles (VSM) appear to be functionally compartmentalized such that glycolysis fuels membrane-related processes, whereas oxidative processes fuel actin-myosin interaction.
