Life history analysis of HIV/AIDS-affected households in rice and cassava-based farming communities in Northern Malawi.

The "New Variant Famine" hypothesis proposed that AIDS offers a major challenge to food security in this part of Africa by impairing the functioning of traditional support systems, leading to the collapse of "social immunity". This study explores the changing perceptions of HIV and AIDS and peoples' responses to its impact by eliciting life history narratives of 30 respondents in Northern Malawi. We classified respondents by means of gender, livelihood systems and AIDS impact levels. Respondents reported a range of critical events, recorded in the life histories, that threatened their "social

The problems of offenders with mental disorders: a plurality of perspectives within a single mental health care organisation.

Managers, doctors, nurses, occupational therapists, social workers, psychologists, unqualified staff and service users were interviewed for a qualitative study of risk management and rehabilitation in an inner city medium secure forensic mental health care unit. Different professional orientations to service user problems were identified. Doctors focused primarily on the diagnosis of mental disorder, which they managed mainly through pharmaceutical interventions. Psychologists were principally concerned with personal factors, for example service user insight into their biographical history. Oc

"We have a roof over our head, but we have to eat too:" Exploring shifting foodscapes from homelessness into Housing First in Kingston, Ontario.

BACKGROUND: People facing extended periods of homelessness exhibit a remarkable degree of agency and resilience in procuring food. The literature on foodscapes considers the sociospatial contexts of food procurement, finding that what happens within and along the way to sites of food acquisition and consumption are important considerations in fully understanding and realizing food security. PURPOSE: This study explores the shift in foodscapes of people who are transitioning from homelessness into scattered-site independent housing via a municipal Housing First program and considers implicatio

Associations between Subjective and Objective Measures of the Community Food Environment and Executive Function in Early Childhood.

The present study utilized a cross-sectional design to assess whether two indicators of the community food environment, parent perceptions of the community food environment (i.e., as assessed by parent reports of access to, availability, and affordability of foods) and limited food access (via census data), were related to executive function in preschool children. Children were recruited during the 2014-2015 academic year from Head Start and community-based preschools (N = 102) and children's executive function ability was tested using the Head-Toes-Knees-Shoulders task. [The status of medical-occupational rehabilitation exemplified by urologic tumor patients].

Many patients with urological carcinomas feel able, and indeed are able, to return to work after medical treatment. From a medical, psychological and socioeconomic point of view, routine pensioning must nowadays be rejected. Vocational reintegration is prepared in an individual and comprehensive manner in facilities for medical-vocational rehabilitation (phase II). The indication for vocational rehabilitation measures depends on the prognosis, on age and motivation, as well as on treatment aftereffects. The implications of operative, radiation and chemotherapy for the timing and course of the

Work disability among persons with musculoskeletal conditions.

We examined the question of what distinguishes persons with musculoskeletal disease who continue working after onset of illness from those who do not. We also investigated why persons with musculoskeletal disease have high rates of work disability relative to those with other chronic conditions of comparable activity limitation. Data regarding 3,100 persons with limitations in activities and chronic disease who were respondents to the 1978 Social Security Administration Survey of Disabled and Non-Disabled Adults were used. Persons with musculoskeletal disease who stopped working had poorer ove…

Hostile attributional biases in severely aggressive adolescents.

Adolescent boys (N = 128) from a maximum security prison for juvenile offenders were administered a task to assess hostile attributional biases. As hypothesized, these biases were positively correlated with undersocialized aggressive conduct disorder (as indicated by high scores on standardized scales and by psychiatric diagnoses), with reactive-aggressive behavior, and with the number of interpersonally violent crimes committed. Hostile attributional biases were found not to relate to nonviolent crimes or to socialized aggressive behavior disorder. These findings held even when race and estim
