Psychometric properties of the Japanese translation of the De Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale for young and older adults.

OBJECTIVE: The De Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale (DJGLS) has been widely used to measure two types of loneliness: social and emotional loneliness. However, no Japanese translation has been developed. Furthermore, the characteristics of social and emotional loneliness in the Japanese population remain unclear. This study examined the psychometric properties of a Japanese translation of the DJGLS. METHODS: A total of 1,000 participants (500 young and older adults each) completed online questionnaires, which included items on loneliness, depression, and social isolation. RESULTS: Confirmatory f

Neural Synchrony and Consumer Behavior: Predicting Friends' Behavior in Real-World Social Networks.

The endogenous aspect of social influence, reflected in the spontaneous alignment of behaviors within close social relationships, plays a crucial role in understanding human social behavior. In two studies involving 222 human subjects (Study 1: n = 175, 106 females; Study 2: n = 47, 33 females), we used a longitudinal behavioral study and a naturalistic stimuli neuroimaging study to investigate the endogenous consumer behavior similarities and their neural basis in real-world social networks. The findings reveal that friends, compared with nonfriends, exhibit higher similarity in product evalu

Production and perception of volitional laughter across social contexts.

Human nonverbal vocalizations such as laughter communicate emotion, motivation, and intent during social interactions. While differences between spontaneous and volitional laughs have been described, little is known about the communicative functions of volitional (voluntary) laughter-a complex signal used across diverse social contexts. Here, we examined whether the acoustic structure of volitional laughter encodes social contextual information recognizable by humans and computers. We asked men and women to produce volitional laughs in eight distinct social contexts ranging from positive (e.g.

Transgender health: on a world scale.

Understanding transgender health on a world scale requires an adequate conceptualisation of gender as an embodied social structure, and an awareness of imbalances in the global economy of knowledge. Four major clusters of health issues are identified for trans groups in the majority, postcolonial world: staying alive in the face of violence and disease, keeping a trans life afloat in practice, facing pressures including rising populism, and making transitions work. Familiar models of professional health care are not adequate to these issues across much of the world; social action and organisin…

The Psychometric Validity of the TikTok Addiction Scale Turkish Version: The Relationship between TikTok Addiction, Stress, and Personality.

OBJECTIVES: The rapid global proliferation of TikTok has increased the need for culturally adapted measurement tools to assess problematic TikTok use. This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the TikTok Addiction Scale (TTAS-TR) and examine its associations with social media addiction, perceived stress, and personality traits. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was administered to 508 Turkish TikTok users. Participants completed the TTAS-TR, the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS), the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), and the Big Five Pe

Impact of social relationships on income-laughter relationships among older people: the JAGES cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVES: Laughter has a positive and quantifiable effect on certain aspects of health, and previous studies have suggested that income influences the emotion. However, it is unknown whether social relationship-related factors modify the association between equivalised income and laughter among older people. In the present study, we examined the relationship between equivalised income and the frequency of laughter. In addition, we examined the impact of social relationship-related factors on the association between equivalised income and frequency of laughter using a cross-sectional study de

Measuring social activities and social function in long-term cancer survivors who received hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

ObjectiveCancer survivors report deficits in social functioning even years after completing treatment. Commonly used measures of social functioning provide incomplete understanding of survivors' social behavior. This study describes social activities of survivors and evaluates the psychometric properties of the Social Activity Log (SAL) in a cohort of long-term survivors of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) for cancer.MethodsOne hundred and two (5-20 year) survivors completed the SAL, Short-Form-36 Health Survey (SF-36), and other patient-reported outcomes. Central Domains of Quality of Life and Their Associated Factors in Patients With Heart Failure: A Network Analysis Approach.

BACKGROUND: The interactions of quality of life domains and their associated factors remain unclear among patients with heart failure. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to identify the central domains of quality of life and their associated factors in patients with heart failure. METHODS: We enrolled 216 patients with heart failure from 3 university-affiliated hospitals in this cross-sectional study. Participants completed self-report questionnaires assessing physical symptoms, depressive and anxiety symptoms, social network, and quality of life. Network analysis was applied to examine the network stru

Mapping relative proximity within an internalizing symptoms network.

Understanding how symptom domains relate to one another (e.g., whether generalized anxiety is more similar to depression than to panic) is central to psychiatric classification. We demonstrate a procedure for quantifying relative proximity, defined as whether one symptom domain is statistically closer to another compared to other domains. As a motivating application, we examine the structure of internalizing symptoms characterized by fear, distress, avoidance, and heightened arousal. Using a network approach, we analyzed data from six questionnaires assessing depression, generalized anxiety di

Characterizing subdomains of insistence on sameness in autistic youth.

Insistence on sameness (IS) encompasses a range of behavioral patterns, including resistance to change, routines, and ritualized behaviors, that can be present across social and non-social contexts. Given the breadth of behaviors encompassed by IS, it is important to determine whether this domain is best conceptualized and measured as uni- or a multi-dimensional construct. Therefore, the current study aimed to characterize the structure of IS and explore potentially distinct of patterns of associations between identified IS factors and relevant correlates, including age, sex, IQ, anxiety, soci

Examining shared and unique aspects of Social Anxiety Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder using factor analysis.

Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) and Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are fairly common psychiatric conditions that impair the functioning of otherwise healthy young adults. Given that the two conditions frequently co-occur, measurement of the characteristics unique to each condition is critical. This study evaluated the structure and construct overlap of two screening measures of SAD and ASD. Results from 623 young adults indicated that separable, though highly correlated, factors can be derived from the two measures related to social anxiety and social difficulties. The ASD screening measure als

Resisting with purpose: Critical consciousness and solidary-driven resistance in health professions education.

Building on Ellaway and Wyatt's commentary, we discuss the role of critical consciousness, the reflective awareness of social, cultural, and power structures that shape practice, in fostering resistance that remains faithful to the core values of the profession. We argue that legitimate professional resistance requires an orientation toward transforming the social and structural conditions that produce inequality and harm.

Corrective Experiences to Enhance Trust: Clinical Wisdom From Good (Enough) Psychiatric Management.

Unstable trust within social interchange underlies the symptom constellation of borderline personality disorder (BPD), resulting in preoccupation with intense dyadic relationships, limited capacity for social collaboration, and constricted social networks. Good Psychiatric Management (GPM) provides a distilled formulation of how interpersonal hypersensitivities drive the engine of BPD's symptomatic oscillations in both affect and attachment. The authors summarize clinically relevant conclusions from the empirical literature on trust in BPD, synthesize it with selected ideas from other empirica

The biological origins of rituals: An interdisciplinary perspective.

Ritual behavior is ubiquitous, marking animal motor patterns, normal and psychopathological behavior in human individuals as well as every human culture. Moreover, formal features of rituals appear to be highly conserved along phylogeny and characterized by a circular and spatio-temporal structure typical of habitual behavior with internal repetition of non-functional acts and redirection of attention to the "script" of the performance. A continuity, based on highly conserved cortico-striatal loops, can be traced from animal rituals to human individual and collective rituals with psychopatholo

Psychometric properties and clinical cut-off scores of the Spanish version of the Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents.

This study examined the reliability and validity evidence drawn from the scores of the Spanish version of the Slovenian-developed Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents (SASA; Puklek, 1997; Puklek & Vidmar, 2000) using a community sample (Study 1) and a clinical sample (Study 2). Confirmatory factor analysis in Study 1 replicated the 2-factor structure found by the original authors in a sample of Slovenian adolescents. Test-retest reliability was adequate. Furthermore, the SASA correlated significantly with other social anxiety scales, supporting concurrent validity evidence in Spanish adolescen

Homelessness and drug use: evidence from a community sample.

BACKGROUND: Questions regarding the nature of the association between drug use and risk of homelessness remain unresolved and have important policy implications. METHODS: To address this issue, data are presented from a 2001 community survey in Chicago, Illinois that collected information regarding histories of drug use behaviors and homeless experiences from 627 adults aged 18 to 40. Using covariance structure analyses, two alternative models of the association between drug use and homelessness were evaluated: social selection versus social adaptation processes. RESULTS: These findings prov

Unmet healthcare need, gender, and health inequalities in Canada.

Unmet healthcare need should be rare in nations with a universally accessible publicly funded healthcare system such as Canada. This however is not the case. This study examines the extent to which predictors of such need are consistent with various paradigmatic approaches (e.g., structural-critical, social capital, social support, and lifestyle) that consider such issues. Analyses of data from a probability sample of 2536 urban residents in British Columbia specified the relationship of unmet need with socioeconomic issues such as income, gender, and housing tenure, community issues such as s

Social bonds and helping dynamics promote cooperation in nested group populations.

Most studies on the evolution of cooperation focus on single-group settings, whereas real-world interactions often occur within nested group structures and are shaped by pre-existing social relationships. The coexistence of cross-level public-goods allocation, dynamically evolving social bonds, and heterogeneous helping responses creates multiple feedback channels, making the stability of cooperation dependent on both group structure and relationship dynamics. To address these limitations, this study develops a two-stage game model that incorporates social bonds to characterize relationship st

[The modern concept of remission in non-psychotic depressive disorders].

The modern concept of remission should take into account its multidimensional structure which includes the complex interaction between clinical (severity/nature of residual symptoms, types of clinical remission), subjective (social functioning and patient's assessment of their condition) and integrative (relapses) characteristics. Based on the study of 385 patients during pharmaco- and psychotherapy, it was shown that the leading role in this structure belongs to the clinical type of remission (full, mono-, poly-symptomatic remission and remission with the structure of minor depression) which,

The Use of Social Media in Health Interventions for People Living with Cancer: A Systematic Review.

Social media offers scalable opportunities for social connection and health communication; however, its role in cancer interventions remains unclear. This systematic review examines the use of social media in cancer-related health interventions and their targeted outcomes. The review was registered with PROSPERO and conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines. Seven databases were searched for English-language randomized controlled trials (RCTs) (2000-2024) evaluating cancer interventions with a social media component. Eligible studies involved adults (≥18 years) with a cancer diagnosis and r
