We describe a generalized approach to stereocontrolled synthesis of substituted cyclic hydroxamic acids (3-amino-1-hydroxy-3,4-dihydroquinolinones) by selective reduction of substituted 2-nitrophenylalanine substrates. Two cases of nepheline rock dust pneumoconiosis are presented. Radiologically, this is seen as a diffuse increase in interstitial lung markings, lymphadenopathy, air-space disease, and atelectasis secondary to extrinsic compression by enlarged hilar lymph nodes. Major differential diagnoses include carcinoma of the lung, sarcoidosis, and interstitial lung disease caused by other inorganic dusts. Nepheline rock dust pneumoconiosis should be considered when the above radiological changes are observed and an occupational exposure to inorganic dust is documented.

The phenylfluorone method for tin analysis has been modified to be specific for organotin samples in the ppb and sub-ppb range (4-.1 micrograms of tin). A high-performance liquid chromatographic method has been developed for the simultaneous determination of zopiclone and its main metabolites (N-oxide and N-desmethyl derivatives) in biological fluids. After selective extraction (dichloromethane-2-propanol) these compounds are chromatographed on a column packed with Spherisorb ODS-2 (5 micron) using monobasic sodium phosphate-methanol (45:55, v/v). In search of water-soluble artemisinin derivatives that are more stable than sodium artesunate, over 30 derivatives containing an amino group (compounds 3-5) were synthesized and tested in mice. All products tested (except 5a and 5b) are the beta isomers. These basic compounds combined with organic acids (oxalic acid, maleic acid, etc. ) to yield the corresponding salts. The fate of two trivalent chromium salts (nitrate and chloride) in ISO algal culture medium was followed over 72 h; i.e., the typical duration of algal toxicity tests. Fifty percent of the initial Cr spikes was lost from the solutions by 24 h, with losses up to 90% after 72 h. Monitoring of the temporal variability of Cr(III) concentrations in algal culture media appears necessary to better characterize the toxicity of trivalent chromium to algae.

Boron is an essential trace element in cellular metabolism; however, the molecular mechanism of boron in the heart is unclear. In this study, we examined the effect of sodium tetraborate (as boron source) as a possible protective agent or competitive inhibitor of cardiac hypertrophy in an in vitro murine model.
