Utilization of bone scan and single photon emission computed tomography on amputation planning in acute microvascular injury: Two cases.

The use of single photon emission computer tomography (SPECT/CT) in acute vascular injury is not well documented. SPECT/CT combines the anatomic detail of computer tomography with the functional vascular perfusion of photon emission to determine the viability of osseous structures and surrounding soft tissue. The superimposed imaging provides the practitioner with a reliable anatomic image of viability of a specific anatomic area following insult or injury. We present two cases, bilateral lower extremity frostbite, and symmetric peripheral gangrene in which this imaging modality provided guida

Imaging diagnosis: fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva in a cat.

A 1-year-old female cat was presented for progressive alopecia, gait abnormalities, and stiffness. Radiography demonstrated multiple calcified lesions within the soft tissues of the cervical and thoracic spine, shoulder, and limbs. Postmortem computed tomography provided more detailed information on the distribution, pattern, and extension of lesions. In addition, computed tomography helped guide sample selection for histopathology. The final diagnosis was fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva. This is a rare disorder of unknown etiology, characterized by fibrosis and heterotopic bone formatio

Limited radiographic detectability of novel 3D printed materials used in dental surgery.

OBJECTIVES: The digitalization of numerous dental workflows has significantly expanded the possibilities of digital treatment planning in recent years. By using additively manufactured templates and guides, preoperative planning can be realized reliably and minimally invasively on the patient. However, these devices may break under mechanical stress during use, so that fragments may remain in the surgical field, be swallowed or aspirated. This study investigates the radiologic detectability of additively manufactured materials in surrounding soft tissue. METHODS: The visual detectability of s

Metachronous extraskeletal (soft tissue) epithelioid osteogenic sarcoma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Metachronous osteosarcoma is a rare form of osteosarcoma. The occurrence of metachronous tumor in soft tissue is exceedingly rare. The pathogenesis of metachronous osteosarcoma, as to whether it represents multiple true primaries or metastatic disease, is still obscure. CASE PRESENTATION: A 49-year-old Indian man presented with progressively increasing swelling in his left hand of 2 months' duration. An X-ray showed a soft tissue lesion. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed a soft tissue mass lesion, with peripheral enhancement and central necrotic areas in radial palmar s

[Strategies for the definitive management of pilon fractures].

Pilon fractures are among the most challenging injuries of the lower extremities and are associated with a high complication rate due to the frequently severe soft tissue damage. The currently established 2‑stage treatment concept with initial stabilization using a joint-bridging external fixator, subsequent soft tissue conditioning and thorough preoperative planning represents the current gold standard of care. Computed tomography with multiplanar and three-dimensional reconstruction is indispensable for detailed analysis of the fracture morphology and the development of an individually adapt

A nonradiographic approach to detect Class III skeletal discrepancies.

INTRODUCTION: Because of the hereditary nature of Class III malocclusion, relatives of affected subjects often ask for a consultation. To estimate the degree of skeletal manifestation without exposing them to radiation, an alternative to lateral cephalograms would be valuable for preliminary diagnosis. Thus, we aimed to assess the validity of profile photographs to detect skeletal Class III discrepancy. METHODS: Profile photographs and lateral cephalograms were available from 42 young white men, 29 with Class III malocclusion and 13 with Class I. A computer-based analysis was performed includ

Longitudinal investigation of soft palate and nasopharyngeal airway relations in different rotation types.

The relationship between the soft palate and the nasopharyngeal airway in different mandibular growth rotation models was investigated. A total of 72 lateral cephalograms were obtained three years longitudinally from 24 individuals. The subjects had a mean age of 10.7 +/- 1.2 years and showed a normal (n = 8), posterior (n = 8), and anterior (n = 8) mandibular rotation pattern. Linear and angular measurements of the soft palate and nasopharyngeal airway were recorded by using PORDIOS computer program and were examined by means of descriptive statistics and paired t-tests. A linear increase in

Modular soft pneumatic actuator mimics elephant trunk locomotion.

Robots support and facilitate tasks in all life fields. Soft robots specifically have the advantages of inherent compliance, safe interaction and flexible deformability. Soft pneumatic network (Pneu-Net) is a soft pneumatic actuator (SPA) composed of network of chambers that is actuated by pneumatic power. Soft Pneu-Net fits the human interface applications perfectly. In this paper, a bio-inspired modular based design for Pneu-Net actuator is developed. The actuator mimics the elephant trunk curling to be employed for rehabilitation of human hand fingers. The actuator is an integrated four Pne
