Soil-transmitted helminth parasites and allergy: Observations from Ecuador.

There is considerable interest as to potential protective effects of soil-transmitted helminths (STH) against allergy and allergic diseases. Here, we discuss findings of studies done of the effects of STH parasites on atopy and allergic diseases in Ecuador. While cross-sectional studies have consistently shown a reduced prevalence of allergen skin prick test (SPT) reactivity among infected schoolchildren, the removal of these infections by repeated deworming did not affect SPT prevalence over the short-term (ie, 12 months) but may have increased SPT prevalence over the long-term (ie, 15-17 yea…

Relating coccidioidomycosis (valley fever) incidence to soil moisture conditions.

Coccidioidomycosis (also called Valley fever) is caused by a soilborne fungus, Coccidioides spp., in arid regions of the southwestern United States. Though some who develop infections from this fungus remain asymptomatic, others develop respiratory disease as a consequence. Less commonly, severe illness and death can occur when the infection spreads to other regions of the body. Previous analyses have attempted to connect the incidence of coccidioidomycosis to broadly available climatic measurements, such as precipitation or temperature. However, with the limited availability of long-term, in …

Epidemiology of soil-transmitted helminthiases-related mortality in Brazil.

Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections are widely distributed in tropical and subtropical areas, including Brazil. We performed a nationwide population-based study including all deaths in Brazil from 2000 to 2011, in which STHs (ascariasis, trichuriasis and/or hookworm infection) were mentioned on death certificates, either as underlying or as associated causes of death. Epidemiological characteristics, time trends and spatial analysis of STH-related mortality were analysed. STHs was identified on 853/12 491 280 death certificates: 827 (97·0%) deaths related to ascariasis, 25 (2·9%) to hoo…

Differential assemblage of functional units in paddy soil microbiomes.

Flooded rice fields are not only a global food source but also a major biogenic source of atmospheric methane. Using metatranscriptomics, we comparatively explored structural and functional succession of paddy soil microbiomes in the oxic surface layer and anoxic bulk soil. Cyanobacteria, Fungi, Xanthomonadales, Myxococcales, and Methylococcales were the most abundant and metabolically active groups in the oxic zone, while Clostridia, Actinobacteria, Geobacter, Anaeromyxobacter, Anaerolineae, and methanogenic archaea dominated the anoxic zone. The protein synthesis potential of these groups wa…

Wastewater treatment by soil infiltration: Long-term phosphorus removal.

Phosphorus (P) leaching from on-site wastewater treatment systems may contribute to eutrophication. In developed countries the most common on-site treatment technique is septic systems with soil infiltration. However, the current knowledge about long term P removal in soil treatment systems is not well developed and the data used for estimation of P losses from such systems are unreliable. In this study we sampled four filter beds from community-scale soil treatment systems with an age of between 14 and 22years to determine the long-term P removal and to investigate the chemical mechanisms beh…

Persistence of Yersinia pestis in soil under natural conditions.

As part of a fatal human plague case investigation, we showed that the plague bacterium, Yersinia pestis, can survive for at least 24 days in contaminated soil under natural conditions. These results have implications for defining plague foci, persistence, transmission, and bioremediation after a natural or intentional exposure to Y. pestis.

Biosolids affect soil barium in a dryland wheat agroecosystem.

In December 2003, the USEPA released an amended list of 15 "candidate pollutants for exposure and hazard screening" with regard to biosolids land application, including Ba. Therefore, we decided to monitor soil Ba concentrations from a dryland wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)-fallow agroecosystem experiment. This experiment received 10 biennial biosolids applications (1982-2003) at rates from 0 to 26.8 dry Mg ha(-1) per application year. The study was conducted on a Platner loam (Aridic Paleustoll), approximately 30 km east of Brighton, CO. Total soil Ba, as measured by 4 M HNO(3), increased with …

Leaching behavior of Cr(III) in stabilized/solidified soil.

The leaching behavior of chromium was studied using batch leaching tests, surface complexation modeling and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. A contaminated soil sample containing 1330 mg-Cr kg(-1) and 25600 mg-Fe kg(-1) of dry soil was stabilized/solidified (S/S) with 10% cement, 25% cement, 10% lime and a mixture of 20% flyash and 5% lime. The XANES analysis showed that Cr(III) was the only Cr species in untreated soil and S/S-treated samples. The leachate Cr concentration determined using the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) was reduced from 5.18 mg…

Biological control of soil-borne pathogens by fluorescent pseudomonads.

Particular bacterial strains in certain natural environments prevent infectious diseases of plant roots. How these bacteria achieve this protection from pathogenic fungi has been analysed in detail in biocontrol strains of fluorescent pseudomonads. During root colonization, these bacteria produce antifungal antibiotics, elicit induced systemic resistance in the host plant or interfere specifically with fungal pathogenicity factors. Before engaging in these activities, biocontrol bacteria go through several regulatory processes at the transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels.

Effects of different plant protection programs on soil microbes.

The aim of this study was to assess the effects of two pesticide regimens (conventional full insurance compared with supervised and reduced pesticide use) and two cultivation techniques (conventional tillage and fertilization compared with no tillage and lower fertilization) on soil microbes in a field study, and to evaluate the results with laboratory tests. The herbicides used were chlorsulfuron, MCPA, and bentazone; the fungicides carboxin-imazalin and propiconazole; and the insecticides dimethoate and pirimicarb. In the field studies, the effects on microbial biota were assessed by measuri…

Comparison of triticonazole dissipation after seed or soil treatment.

This study examined the long-term fate of the fungicide triticonazole (TTZ; 5-[(4-chlorophenyl)methylene]-2,2-dimethyl-1-(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-ylmethyl)cydopentanol) applied at a normal field dose (8.9 g ha(-1)) via seed treatment, which is the normal alternative in practice. The TTZ was applied to wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grains as a disinfectant before sowing or spraying on bare soil for comparison and reference to the seed treatment. The seeds were germinated and grown in pots in a greenhouse at 22 +/- 3 degrees C. The dissipation of TTZ was studied by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry…

Quantitative recovery of Burkholderia pseudomallei from soil in Thailand.

Melioidosis is common in north-eastern Thailand, but is reported rarely from the adjacent areas of central Thailand, although rice farming is common to both regions. Quantitative soil cultures for Burkholderia pseudomallei were therefore prepared on 12 rice farms in both regions. B. pseudomallei was isolated from a similar proportion of rice fields in the central region (6/12) and in the north-east (7/12). Within the culture-positive sites, the number of B. pseudomallei colony-forming units (cfu) per mL of soil/water supernatant was significantly higher in the north-east (median 230 cfu/mL; ra…

Alkaline runoff, soil pH and white oak manganese deficiency.

Rainfall, surface runoff, and root zone pH values were determined in an effort to explain symptoms of decline in white oaks (Quercus alba L.) growing in, and downslope from, a parking lot. The soil was a Morley silt loam (Typic Hapludalf). Root zones within and downslope from the lot were dominated by alkaline soil reactions. Soil pH values along 15-m transects radiating from a white oak tree in a healthy stand upslope from the lot were predominantly acid beneath the crown, averaging between pH 5.5 and 6.1 to a depth of 90 cm within a 1.5 m radius of the tree trunk. Rainfall pH values varied f…

Volatile-rich lunar soil: evidence of possible cometary impact.

A subsurface Apollo 16 soil, 61221, is much richer in volatile compounds than soils from any other locations or sites as shown by thermal analysis-gas release measurements. A weight loss of 0.03 percent during the interval 175 degrees to 350 degrees C was associated with the release of water, carbon dioxide, methane, hydrogen cyanide, hydrogen, and minor amounts of hydrocarbons and other species. These volatile components may have been brought to this site by a comet, which may have formed North Ray crater.

Amino acid enhanced phosphorus fertilizers enhance wheat yield and efficiency by optimizing soil phosphorus pools in wheat fields for soil phosphorus risk management.

Developing amino acid-based biostimulant-enhanced phosphate fertilizers can help improve fertilizer use efficiency and reduce environmental emissions. However, under the background of phosphorus (P) risk management, the mechanism by which amino acid-enhanced phosphate fertilizers affect the transformation characteristics of soil P remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the effects of amino acid addition on soil P pools, crop yield, and phosphate fertilizer utilization through a soil column experiment. Five treatments were set up: (1) no fertilizer control (CK), (2) no phosphate fertilize…
