Two New Species and a Further Country Record of the Caridean Shrimp Genus Periclimenaeus Borradaile, 1915 from Korea (Decapoda: Palaemonidae).

Two new species of the palaemonid genus Periclimenaeus are described and illustrated from Korea; additionally, a third species is recorded from Korea for the first time. Periclimenaeus karantina sp. nov. was obtained from ascidian hosts. The species has a denticulate dactylus on both second pereiopods, considered to be typical for ascidian associates. It can be separated from related species by the combination of the following characters: the carpocerite overreaching the anterior margin of the scaphocerite; the distolateral tooth of the scaphocerite exceeding the anterior margin of the lamella

Identification of Competing Endogenous RNA Regulatory Networks in Vitamin A Deficiency-Induced Congenital Scoliosis by Transcriptome Sequencing Analysis.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Congenital scoliosis (CS) is a result of anomalous development of vertebrae and is frequently associated with somitogenesis malformation. Although noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) have been recently determined to be involved in the pathogenesis of CS, the competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) regulatory networks in CS remain largely unknown. METHODS: Sequencing was conducted to explore the ncRNA expression profiles in rat embryos (gestation day 9) following vitamin A deficiency (VAD) (n = 9 for the vitamin A deficiency-induced congenital scoliosis (VAD-CS) group and n = 4 for the control g

Hemimetameric shift in spina bifida: three case reports.

PURPOSE: Hemivertebrae is the most frequent reason of congenital scoliosis, and hemimetameric shift is a finding, which is characterized by two hemivertebraes located contralateral, with at least one normal vertebra between them. Embryologically, hemivertebrae is caused by delay in somite movements and as a result, a total vertebral shift occurs because of mismatches in the following segments. Hemimetameric shift accompanying spina bifida is described as extremely rare. There are only two case series of hemimetameric shift in literature but no spina bifida patient was reported in these series.

Protection of the gametes embryo/fetus from prenatal radiation exposure.

There is no convincing evidence of germline mutation manifest as heritable disease in the offspring of humans attributable to ionizing radiation, yet radiation clearly induces mutations in microbes and somatic cells of rodents and humans. Doses to the embryo estimated to be in the range of 0.15-0.2 Gy during the pre-implantation and pre-somite stages may increase the risk of embryonic loss. However, an increased risk of congenital malformations or growth retardation has not been observed in the surviving embryos. These results are primarily derived from mammalian animal studies and are referre

Carbamate nerve agent prophylatics exhibit distinct toxicological effects in the zebrafish embryo model.

Pyridostigmine bromide (PB) is an FDA-approved drug for the treatment of myasthenia gravis and a prophylactic pre-treatment for organophosphate nerve agent poisoning. Current methods for evaluating nerve agent treatments include enzymatic studies and mammalian models. Rapid whole animal screening tools for assessing the effects of nerve agent pre-treatment and post-exposure drugs represent an underdeveloped area of research. We used zebrafish as a model for acute and chronic developmental exposure to PB and two related carbamate acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors, neostigmine bromide (NB)

Flat mount preparation for observation and analysis of zebrafish embryo specimens stained by whole mount in situ hybridization.

The zebrafish embryo is now commonly used for basic and biomedical research to investigate the genetic control of developmental processes and to model congenital abnormalities. During the first day of life, the zebrafish embryo progresses through many developmental stages including fertilization, cleavage, gastrulation, segmentation, and the organogenesis of structures such as the kidney, heart, and central nervous system. The anatomy of a young zebrafish embryo presents several challenges for the visualization and analysis of the tissues involved in many of these events because the embryo dev

Hypoganglionic colorectum in the chick embryo: a model of human hypoganglionosis.

INTRODUCTION: The enteric nervous system is an intrinsic network of nerve cells and glia within the gastrointestinal wall, which originates in the vagal and sacral neural tube. The vagal neural tube is known to supply the colorectum with the majority of its nerve cells, and its ablation during early development produces a hypoganglionic colorectum. We hypothesized that the cholinergic nerve activity in the chick embryo hypoganglionic colorectum is decreased similar to the human situation and, therefore, this study is designed to investigate cholinergic innervations in the chick embryo hypogang

Interplay between activin and Hox genes determines the formation of the kidney morphogenetic field.

The kidney develops in a specific position along the anterior-posterior axis. All vertebrate kidney tissues are derived from the intermediate mesoderm (IM), and early kidney genes such as Lim1 and Pax2 are expressed in amniotes posterior to the sixth somite axial level. IM cells anterior to this level do not express kidney genes owing to changes in their competence to respond to kidney-inductive signals present along the entire axis. We aimed to understand the molecular mechanisms governing the loss of competence of anterior IM cells and the formation of the anterior border of the kidney morph

Short-faced mice and developmental interactions between the brain and the face.

The length of the face represents an important axis of variation in mammals and especially in primates. Mice with mutations that produce variation along this axis present an opportunity to study the developmental factors that may underlie evolutionary change in facial length. The Crf4 mutant, obtained from the C57BL/6J (wt/wt) background by chemical mutagenesis by the Baylor Mouse Mutagenesis Resource, is reported to have a short-faced phenotype. As an initial step towards developing this model, we performed 3D geometric morphometric comparisons of Crf4 mice to C57BL/6J wild-type mice focusing

Neural crest-derived defects in experimental esophageal atresia.

Esophageal atresia (EA) is often associated with cardiovascular and other malformations that are likely neural crest derived. The present study tests the hypothesis that the heart and great vessels and the thymus and parathyroids may be abnormal in the rat model of EA as a result of disturbed neural crest development. Time-mated pregnant rats received intraperitoneally on d 8 and 9 of gestation either 2 mg/kg adriamycin or vehicle. Esophageal, heart, and thymic malformations were sought under the microscope in term fetuses. The parathyroids were histologically investigated. Control fetuses had

c-Krox binds to several sites in the promoter of both mouse type I collagen genes. Structure/function study and developmental expression analysis.

We have previously shown that c-Krox is a zinc finger protein that can increases the transcriptional activity of the mouse alpha1(I) collagen promoter through its binding to two GC-rich sequences (Galéra, P., Musso, M., Ducy, P., and Karsenty, G. (1994) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A. 91, 9372-9376). In this report we show that c-Krox can bind to an additional site in the promoter of the alpha1(I) collagen gene and to three sites in the promoter of the alpha2(I) collagen gene, the other gene coding for type I collagen. One of the binding sites present in both promoters is adjacent to the CCAAT

Abnormalities of neural tube formation in pre-spina bifida splotch-delayed mouse embryos.

The splotch-delayed homozygous mutant (Spd/Spd) develops spina bifida with or without exencephaly, has spinal ganglia abnormalities, and delays in posterior neuropore closure and neural crest cell emigration. The heterozygote (Spd/+) has a pigmentation defect, and occasionally neural tube defects. To investigate the underlying mechanisms, we compared the neuroepithelium in the posterior neuropore region of cytogenetically identified 15-18 somite pair Spd/Spd, Spd/+, and +/+ mouse embryos by transmission electron and light microscopy. The notochordal area and cell number in the non-fused neuroe

The effects of phenylalanine on cultured rat embryos.

The offspring of mothers with untreated classic phenylketonuria (PKU) have shown a high frequency of microcephaly, mental retardation, pre- and postnatal growth retardation, and birth defects. The aim of this study was to determine whether phenylalanine (phe) is the teratogenic agent in maternal PKU. To observe the direct effects of phe on organogenesis, embryos of 9.5-day pregnant rats were cultured for 48 h in the presence of phe at concentrations of 0.1 to 6.0 mM. Within this range no morphological abnormalities occurred in exposed embryos, when compared to control embryos. However there wa

Hypothesis; overdistention of the neural tube may cause anomalies of non-neural organs.

This hypothesis is offered by a neurological surgeon interested in anomalies of the central nervous system. It is based on accumulating evidence indicating that some neural tube defects result not from failure of the tube to close but from its rupture after closure. The central nervous system, serving all organs, is the first to develop and its maldevelopment may cause damage to other emerging structures. The neural tube closes during the fourth week and is immediately distended by a proteinaceous neural tube fluid (NTF) secreted by its lining cells at a pressure four to five times that of the

Ultrasonography and MRI features of the Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome.

Although Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome is a rare condition with a reported incidence of 1/4500 female live births, it represents the second most common cause of primary amenorrhea and has psychologically devastating consequences. The radiologist plays a pivotal role in both making the accurate initial diagnosis of this condition and assessing findings that may contribute to treatment planning. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of the capabilities of ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the diagnosis and management of this syndrome with emphasis on t

Congenital developmental defects of derivates of müllerian ducts.

Congenital developmental defects of Müllerian derivates, understandable with the knowledge of embryological development of Wolffian and Müllerian ducts, are defects of canalisation (= gynatresias), defects in fusing, combined defects and uterovaginal agenesis. Gynatresias should be suspected in the newborn, but distinguished in puberty, on the basis of menstrual blood retention, as hymeneal atresia (haematocolpos), aplasia partis distalis vaginae (haematocolpos partialis), transversal vagina septum and aplasia of vagina and uterine cervix (isolated haematometra). Particular operations are desc

When body segmentation goes wrong.

Dual-wavelength miniature fluorescence microscopy is desirable for resolving multiple fluorescent signals in freely behaving animal experiments, but existing implementations often require separate detection paths, beam-splitting optics, or additional sensors, thereby increasing system complexity. Here, we report a compact shared-path dual-wavelength miniscope that combines spectral multiplexing with time-division excitation in a single-sensor architecture. The system alternates blue and red excitation in synchrony with camera exposure, encoding fluorescence signals at two wavelengths into an i

Magnetic resonance evaluation of Müllerian remnants in Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of Müllerian remnants in young females clinically suspected of Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome in a primary amenorrhea workup. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen young females underwent multiplanar T2- and transverse T1-weighted MRI at either a 1.5T or 3.0T MR imager. Two gynecologic radiologists reached consensus decisions for the evaluation of Müllerian remnants, vagina, ovaries, and associated findings. RESULTS: All cases had bilateral uterine buds in the pelvic cavity, with unilateral cavitation in two cases. The

Early- and late-migrating cranial neural crest cell populations have equivalent developmental potential in vivo.

We present the first in vivo study of the long-term fate and potential of early-migrating and late-migrating mesencephalic neural crest cell populations, by performing isochronic and heterochronic quail-to-chick grafts. Both early- and late-migrating populations form melanocytes, neurons, glia, cartilage and bone in isochronic, isotopic chimeras, showing that neither population is lineage-restricted. The early-migrating population distributes both dorsally and ventrally during normal development, while the late-migrating population is confined dorsally and forms much less cartilage and bone. W
