Optimal time for subarachnoid transplantation of neural progenitor cells in the treatment of contusive spinal cord injury.

This study aimed to identify the optimal neural progenitor cell transplantation time for spinal cord injury in rats via the subarachnoid space. Cultured neural progenitor cells from 14-day embryonic rats, constitutively expressing enhanced green fluorescence protein, or media alone, were injected into the subarachnoid space of adult rats at 1 hour (acute stage), 7 days (subacute stage) and 28 days (chronic stage) after contusive spinal cord injury. Results showed that grafted neural progenitor cells migrated and aggregated around the blood vessels of the injured region, and infiltrated the spi

A spatiotemporal analysis of the spread of African swine fever in Vietnam in 2019.

INTRODUCTION: African swine fever (ASF) was first detected in Vietnam in early February 2019 and spread rapidly nationwide. By December 2019, ASF had been reported in 8,509 of 11,055 communes (77%) across all 63 provinces and municipalities. METHODS: Descriptive analyses were performed to summarize temporal and spatial patterns of ASF-affected communes (outbreaks). Outbreak data were aggregated weekly (week 1-48) based on onset date, and weekly counts, cumulative numbers, and proportions of affected communes were calculated. To quantify the early spread of ASF, we analyzed commune-level outbr

Modelling Spatiotemporal Patterns of Lyme Disease Emergence in Québec.

Lyme disease is a growing public health problem in Québec. Its emergence over the last decade is caused by environmental and anthropological factors that favour the survival of Ixodes scapularis, the vector of Lyme disease transmission. The objective of this study was to estimate the speed and direction of human Lyme disease emergence in Québec and to identify spatiotemporal risk patterns. A surface trend analysis was conducted to estimate the speed and direction of its emergence based upon the first detected case of Lyme disease in each municipality in Québec since 2004. A cluster analysis wa

Bisphosphonate protonation states, conformations, and dynamics on bone mineral probed by solid-state NMR without isotope enrichment.

Recognition of bone mineral by bisphosphonates is crucial to their targeting, efficacy, therapeutic and diagnostic applications, and pharmacokinetics. In a search for rapid and simple NMR approaches to assessing the bone recognition characteristics of bisphosphonates, we have studied alendronate, pamidronate, neridronate, zoledronate and tiludronate, in crystalline form and bound to the surface of pure bone mineral stripped of its organic matrix by a simple chemical process. (31)P NMR chemical shift anisotropies and asymmetries in the crystalline compounds cluster strongly into groupings corre

Spatiotemporal patterns and integrated approach to prioritize areas for surveillance and control of visceral leishmaniasis in a large metropolitan area in Brazil.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a neglected disease with worldwide distribution. Brazil is the country with the largest number of cases in the Americas, and the state of Minas Gerais presents a high VL-related burden and a high case fatality rate. We aimed to analyse the spatial and spatiotemporal patterns of VL occurrence and to identify priority risk areas for surveillance and control in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte-MG, the third largest metropolitan area in Brazil. An ecological study was conducted considering all cases of VL in humans confirmed from 2006 to 2017. The crude and

Tuberculosis in a shopping centre, Portugal, 2004-5.

Genotyping enables to confirm or exclude a tuberculosis (TB) cluster. Excluding the link between cases is particularly important in countries with intermediate/high incidence of TB where the emergence of several TB cases in a particular location in space or time (higher than the expected) could be explained by chance alone. During 2004 and 2005, five TB cases occurred in five shops of a Portuguese shopping centre which employed a total of about 1000 workers. After an epidemiological survey, 52 close contacts were identified and screened. Latent tuberculosis infection was diagnosed in 10 contac

Small-area distribution of multiple sclerosis incidence in western France: in search of environmental triggers.

BackgroundDespite intensive research over several decades, the etiology of multiple sclerosis (MS) remains poorly understood, although environmental factors are supposedly implicated. Our goal was to identify spatial clusters of MS incident cases at the small-area level to provide clues to local environmental risk factors that might cause or trigger the disease.MethodsA population-based and multi-stage study was performed in the French Brittany region to accurately ascertain the clinical onset of disease during the 2000-2004 period. The municipality of residence at the time of clinical onset w

Chikungunya fever as a risk factor for endemic Burkitt's lymphoma in Malawi.

The geographical and age distributions of endemic Burkitt's lymphoma (eBL), in Africa, parallel those of certain arboviruses, which include chikungunya fever. Increased incidences of antibodies to assorted arboviruses, including chikungunya, have been found in eBL sera compared to controls. An increased incidence and space-time case-clusters of eBL occurred during a chikungunya fever epidemic which were confirmed by serology and clinical observation. The present study, conducted in 1987-89, involved 108 eBL patients, and 97 local and 111 hospital controls. We examined, as hospital controls, pa

A Data Driven Approach to Assess Complex Colour Profiles in Plant Tissues.

The ability to quantify the colour of fruit is extremely important for a number of applied fields including plant breeding, postharvest assessment, and consumer quality assessment. Fruit and other plant organs display highly complex colour patterning. This complexity makes it challenging to compare and contrast colours in an accurate and time efficient manner. Multiple methodologies exist that attempt to digitally quantify colour in complex images but these either require a priori knowledge to assign colours to a particular bin, or fit the colours present within segment of the colour space int

Exploring spatiotemporal dynamics and climatic effects on dengue in Amazonas, Peru during 2000-2023.

Peru experienced its most severe dengue outbreak on record, with the Amazonas region reporting 3502 dengue cases in 2022. This study aimed to examine the distribution of dengue cases across Amazonas from 2000 to 2023, while exploring the influence of climate factors. Monthly incidence was aggregated into four consecutive six-year blocks to identify incidence trends, and space-time scan statistics identified high and low-risk clusters. Spearman correlations with distributed lags (0 - 2 months) evaluated the association between incidence and climatic data from NASA-POWER, stratified by season. U

Age-related reduction of hemispheric lateralisation for spatial attention: An EEG study.

A group-level visuospatial attention bias towards the left side of space (pseudoneglect) is consistently observed in young adults, which is likely to be a consequence of right parieto-occipital dominance for spatial attention. Conversely, healthy older adults demonstrate a rightward shift of this behavioural bias, hinting that an age-related reduction of lateralised neural activity may occur within visuospatial attention networks. We compared young (aged 18-25) and older (aged 60-80) adults on a computerised line bisection (landmark) task whilst recording event-related potentials (ERPs). Full-

Molecular analysis of Hurler syndrome in Druze and Muslim Arab patients in Israel: multiple allelic mutations of the IDUA gene in a small geographic area.

The mutations underlying Hurler syndrome (mucopolysaccharidosis IH) in Druze and Muslim Israeli Arab patients have been characterized. Four alleles were identified, using a combination of (a) PCR amplification of reverse-transcribed RNA or genomic DNA segments, (b) cycle sequencing of PCR products, and (c) restriction-enzyme analysis. One allele has two amino acid substitutions, Gly409-->Arg in exon 9 and Ter-->Cys in exon 14. The other three alleles have mutations in exon 2 (Tyr64-->Ter), exon 7 (Gln310-->Ter), or exon 8 (Thr366-->Pro). Transfection of mutagenized cDNAs into Cos-1 cells showe

Clear cell adenocarcinoma of the vagina and cervix: incidence, undetected disease, and diethylstilbestrol.

We conducted an incidence study to determine the occurrence rates of clear cell adenocarcinoma (CCAC) of the vagina and cervix in young women (born in 1940 and thereafter), and a case-series analysis, focusing on the maternal history of pregnancy and delivery and in-utero exposure to diethylstilbestrol (DES). Overall, 10 cases of CCAC had been listed in the files of the Connecticut State Tumor Registry prior to the study, and each of the 10 cases were confirmed as valid. In addition, another 10 cases, all previously undetected, were found after the tissue slides of young women listed as having

Phylogenetic Study of Local Patterns Influenza A(H3N2) Virus Transmission in a Semi-Isolated Population in a Remote Island in Japan Between 2011 and 2013.

BACKGROUND: Influenza A outbreak risk is impacted by the potential for importation and local transmission. Reconstructing transmission history with phylogenetic analysis of genetic sequences can help assess outbreak risk but relies on regular collection of genetic sequences. Few influenza genetic sequences are collected in Japan, which makes phylogenetic analysis challenging, especially in rural, remote settings. We generated influenza A genetic sequences from nasopharyngeal swabs (NPS) samples collected using rapid influenza diagnostic tests and used them to analyze the transmission dynamics

Neural Mechanisms of Shooting Preparation Under High-Risk and High-Precision Tasks: A Multiscale EEG Study.

BACKGROUND: During the shooting-preparation phase, shooters frequently encounter multiple interfering factors, such as task load, social evaluation, and complex environments. These factors can induce intricate changes in neural activity, leading to variations in shooting performance. This study aims to investigate the neural mechanisms underlying brain activity during the shooting preparation phase in high-risk tasks (e.g., Hostage-Rescue Condition) and high-precision tasks (e.g., Long-Range Condition). METHODS: Electroencephalographic (EEG) signals, the shooting performance metrics, and the

EEG and ERP biosignatures of mild cognitive impairment for longitudinal monitoring of early cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease.

Cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease is associated with electroencephalographic (EEG) biosignatures even at early stages of mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The aim of this work is to provide a unified measure of cognitive decline by aggregating biosignatures from multiple EEG modalities and to evaluate repeatability of the composite measure at an individual level. These modalities included resting state EEG (eyes-closed) and two event-related potential (ERP) tasks on visual memory and attention. We compared individuals with MCI (n = 38) to age-matched healthy controls HC (n = 44). In rest
