METHODS: The zinc content of carbonic anhydrase (CA), whose cofactor is zinc, was removed by dialysis against pyridine 2 to 6 dicarboxylic acid and a pure apoenzyme was obtained. Serum proteins were precipitated with trichloroacetic acid (TCA) solution and the supernatant fraction of the sample was used to determine the zinc concentration. The metabolism of methyl mercury (MeHg) has been studied in rabbits administered 203Hg-labeled methyl mercuric chloride, 0.125 mumol/kg body weight, twice a week for 9 weeks, by intravenous injection. Twelve weeks after cessation of treatment, about 54% of the administered dose had been excreted in faeces and 5% in urine. After one week, the highest concentration of 203Hg was found in fur (8.6 nmol Hg/g). Amniotic fluid samples from 21 diabetic pregnant women were pair-matched for gestational age with 21 samples obtained from nondiabetic women, and analyzed for magnesium concentration. Mean +/- standard deviation amniotic fluid magnesium concentration (mg/dL) was 0.86 +/- 0.21 in the diabetic group and 1.06 +/- 0.22 in the control group (P less than .001). It is concluded that in the diabetic pregnancy, a state of fetal magnesium deficiency exists. This deficient state may contribute to neonatal hypocalcemia in infants of diabetic mothers.

Serum magnesium was measured in 102 consecutive patients admitted to a medical ICU. Twenty percent of these patients had hypomagnesemia and 9% had hypermagnesemia. There were no other laboratory tests or clinical features suggesting hypomagnesemia. Of all ion levels measured routinely in these patients, serum magnesium had the highest prevalence of abnormal values.

The study of therapeutical agents for "mucolysis" enables a classification of these drugs from their mode of action at the trachea-bronchial level (pharmacodynamic agents, enzymes, reducers, mucoregulation). The affinity of a piperazine derivative, eprazinone, for polyanionic bronchial mucins, was shown in vitro by spectrophotometry. Because of this property, eprazinone (Mucitux) might modify the fibrillar structure of bronchial mucus. This mode of action would differentiate this treatment from the mucolytic agents used today clinically.

This study investigates the environmental impact of urbanization on water quality in Greater Noida, a rapidly developing region in India. Thirty groundwater samples were collected from five villages during the pre-monsoon season using sterilized polypropylene bottles, and samples were acidified and digested with concentrated nitric acid prior to analysis.
