Altered cortical-amygdala coupling in social anxiety disorder during the anticipation of giving a public speech.

BACKGROUND: Severe stress in social situations is a core symptom of social anxiety disorder (SAD). Connectivity between the amygdala and cortical regions is thought to be important for emotion regulation, a function that is compromised in SAD. However, it has never been tested if and how this connectivity pattern changes under conditions of stress-inducing social evaluative threat. Here we investigate changes in cortical-amygdala coupling in SAD during the anticipation of giving a public speech. METHOD: Twenty individuals with SAD and age-, gender- and education-matched controls (n = 20) part

6p25 interstitial deletion in two dizygotic twins with gyral pattern anomaly and speech and language disorder.

Submicroscopic 6p25 deletion is now recognized as a clinically identifiable syndrome, characterized by intellectual disability, language impairment, hearing deficit, craniofacial, ophthalmologic, cardiac, and varying central nervous system anomalies. We report on two dyzogotic twins with a maternal segregating hemizygous interstitial deletion on chromosome 6p25.1, spanning 0.9 kb; the smallest ever reported. Both had dysmorphic features (prominence of the metopic suture, synophrys, hypertelorism, down-slanting palpebral fissures, tented mouth), and a distinct brain MRI, showing a focal signifi

Disruption of CNTNAP2 and additional structural genome changes in a boy with speech delay and autism spectrum disorder.

Patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) frequently harbour chromosome rearrangements and segmental aneuploidies, which allow us to identify candidate genes. In a boy with mild facial dysmorphisms, speech delay and ASD, we reconstructed by karyotyping, FISH and SNP array-based segmental aneuploidy profiling a highly complex chromosomal rearrangement involving at least three breaks in chromosome 1 and seven breaks in chromosome 7. Chromosome banding revealed an inversion of region 7q32.1-7q35 on the derivative chromosome 7. FISH with region-specific BACs mapped both inversion breakpoints an

Perception of speech and nonspeech stimuli by children with and without reading disability and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

The auditory temporal deficit hypothesis predicts that children with reading disability (RD) will exhibit deficits in the perception of speech and nonspeech acoustic stimuli in discrimination and temporal ordering tasks when the interstimulus interval (ISI) is short. Initial studies testing this hypothesis did not account for the potential presence of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Temporal order judgment and discrimination tasks were administered to children with (1) RD/no-ADHD (n=38), (2) ADHD (n=29), (3) RD and ADHD (RD/ADHD; n=32), and (4) no impairment (NI; n=43). Contra

[Children with a presumably isolated speech-language disorder often have medical or cognitive problems as well].

OBJECTIVE: To assess the language problems of children who otherwise appear to develop normally. DESIGN: A clinical inventory. SETTING: University Hospital Groningen. METHOD: The children (n = 319) were examined according to a standard protocol consisting of: ENT examination, audiologic examination, paedogogic observation and logopaedic examination. Further psychological examination was carried out when needed according to the paedagogic observation. RESULTS: 25 per cent of the children had isolated language problems. For these children logopaedic therapy was indicated. In 75 per cent, a c

The validity of the Five-Minute Speech Sample as an index of Expressed Emotion in parents of eating disorder patients.

This article examines the concurrent validity of the Five-Minute Speech Sample (FMSS) as an index of Expressed Emotion in a Dutch sample of 84 parents of adolescents suffering from anorexia or bulimia nervosa. The Camberwell Family Interview (CFI), the criterion measure of EE, and the FMSS were conducted on the same day. The levels of Expressed Emotion in these families were low when compared with the EE ratings from the schizophrenia studies. The FMSS and CFI-EE ratings showed a limited degree of overlap. Whether the limited association between the two methods is due to the low levels of crit

Comparison of speech and swallowing function in patients with tremor disorders and in normal geriatric patients: a cinefluorographic study.

In a study of vocal tract and esophageal function during speech and swallowing, unmedicated Parkinson patients were found to have specific disorders in oral and esophageal stages of deglutition and a predictable sequence of deterioration in speech. To determine whether these disorders are exclusive to parkinsonism or are typical of all patients with tremor or of geriatric patients in general, a cinefluoroscopic study was initiated to examine the physiology of speech and swallowing in these other patients. Subjects were 10 normal geriatric patients and 10 patients with essential tremor. Results

What works, how and in which contexts when supporting parents to implement intensive speech and language therapy at home for children with speech sound disorder? A protocol for a realist review.

INTRODUCTION: Speech and language therapists (SLTs) worldwide report challenges with providing recommended, evidence-based intervention intensity for children with speech sound disorder (SSD). Challenges such as service constraints and/or family contexts impact on access to optimal therapy intensity. Existing research indicates that empowering and training parents to deliver intervention at home, alongside SLT support, offers one possible solution to increasing the intensity of intervention children with SSD receive. Digital health could increase accessibility to intensive home practice and he

A model for collaborative service delivery for students with language-learning disorders in the public schools. Committee on Language Learning Disorders American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

Collaborative service delivery can augment traditional methods for serving students with language-learning disorders in the public schools. In collaborative service delivery, the speech-language pathologist is an integral member of a transdisciplinary team consisting of educators, parents, and the student. Team members collaborate to formulate a single educational program for each student. The team devises all treatment goals, assessment methods, intervention procedures, and documentation systems to enhance the student's academic and social functioning in the school environment. All team membe

IRF2BPL-Related Disorder, Causing Neurodevelopmental Disorder with Regression, Abnormal Movements, Loss of Speech and Seizures (NEDAMSS) Is Characterized by Pathology Consistent with DRPLA.

BACKGROUND: Childhood neurodegenerative diseases often pose a challenge to clinicians to diagnose because of the degree of genetic heterogeneity and variable presentations. Here, we present a child with progressive neurodegeneration consisting of spasticity, dystonia, and ataxia in which postmortem pathological analysis led to the diagnosis of interferon regulatory factor 2 binding protein like (IRF2BPL)-related disorder. METHODS: Detailed postmortem gross and histological examination was conducted, and findings consistent with dentatorubral-pallidoluysian atrophy (DRPLA) and included polyglu

Dysfunctional neural processing of object-related speech with semantically unrelated vs related co-verbal gesture in schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) are accompanied by impaired multimodal communication. This is particularly evident in production and comprehension deficits of both speech and gesture. Previous neuroimaging findings indicate reduced activation in sensorimotor regions, such as the left postcentral gyrus and right insula, during object-related speech processing in SSD (He et al., 2021). However, it remains unclear how semantic congruency of co-verbal gestures influences the neural processing of object-related speech. This study aims to investigate the effect of semantically rel

Evidence-based decision-making in the treatment of speech, language, and communication disorders in Down syndrome; a scoping review.

This scoping review examined available scientific evidence according to the PRISMA-ScR guideline on the subject of treatment interventions by speech and language therapists of speech, language, and communication needs in people with Down syndrome. A literature search in PubMed, Embase, Cinahl, Cochrane, and Web of Science yielded 41 studies suitable for inclusion. All studies examined the effect of an intervention in speech, language or communicative behaviour, alone or in combination. Most studies were conducted among children, only four were conducted among adults. Twenty-three studies (49%)

Cross-linguistic comparison of speech errors produced by English- and French-speaking preschool-age children with developmental phonological disorders.

Twenty-four French-speaking children with developmental phonological disorders (DPD) were matched on percentage of consonants correct (PCC)-conversation, age, and receptive vocabulary measures to English-speaking children with DPD in order to describe how speech errors are manifested differently in these two languages. The participants' productions of consonants on a single-word test of articulation were compared in terms of feature-match ratios for the production of target consonants, and type of errors produced. Results revealed that the French-speaking children had significantly lower match

Foxp2 mutations and abnormal brain and gastrointestinal development: insights from animal models of speech-language and autism spectrum disorders.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and speech and language disorder (SLD) are distinct neurodevelopmental conditions, yet both share overlapping communication impairments. Forkhead box P2 (FOXP2), a key transcription factor involved in speech and language development, harbors pathogenic mutations such as R553H, which cause SLD and have been suggested to contribute to aspects of ASD-related phenotypes. This review synthesizes insights from animal models to explore the molecular mechanisms by which Foxp2 mutations disrupt the development of the cerebral cortex, thalamus, and enteric nervous system.
